Is this your first car? I thought insurance was a rip off when I was 18! Best I have found is the admiral group (Admiral, Bell and Elephant) with parents as additional drivers and not primary.

Yeh mate first car, will try ringing them up as internet is always giving me high figures lol.

sounds high to me mate, ring them. im 18 and i have a 180bhp RS clio for £1500. in the process of getting a 1.8t a3 which is only £1200 ish. would of thought if its your first car your looking in the region of £2500 though.

cheaper car for one year untill you get some NCB?

im 20 and with a years NCB it will cost me £2600 on my 1.9 a3... cheapest i found so far, i would expect you to pay at least 3-4k for the car your driving

Cant believe the recent hike in insurance... I got my 8P 1.9TDI A3 when I was 19 and that was still only £900 FC, though I did have 2 years NCD.

Im 22 now and its costing £700 to insure a 2.0T, which I think is fair.

Wrong car for a first car I'm afarid and to be brutal you're in cloud cuckoo land even looking at them. Look at small cheap cars like the Vauxhall Corsa 12v, Fiat Sceicento Sporting, Ford Fiesta 1.25. You will still be paying a large wedge for cover but will at least have a chance of a premium that can be paid.

To be honest i would get the strongest car out there just in case of an accident so i'll make sure i stay alive in case of an accident ! I don't wanna get stroppy but english folk does fu*k all to counteract the insurance hyke ! If that happens in eastern/mainland europe then people will get on the streets protesting and burning councils in the process ! The government force more kids to take chances in cheating the system instead of making the policies affordable -in the first place- so the youngsters would not take chances ! We all need to start somewhere and it boils my pi*s knowing that i am 35 and pay 1 grand in insurance with 8 years of no claim bonus, used to pay 250 quid 3 years ago with only 5 years NCB and my renewal quote nearly doubled ! This is legalised robery and the government takes a big chunk out of it in revenue and fat bonusses ! If they did not make it compulsory then it would not be that expensive and different lenders/insurers would have reason to compete !
The thing is the insurance companies are owned by private equity firms which are price "fixing", even their websites are the same and allready know your previous quotes !
In this country you have the right to remain silent- so much so for democracy !!!

Postcode can make a massive difference - check what band you're in. If it's anything other than the lowest two, forget an A4, there's not a chance of you getting cover under £4k.

Expect £2k minimum with a female relative as a named driver, and Admiral/Bell/Elephant are the way to go.

What? Do you honestly believe what you've written there?

Insurance companies are paying out about £1.50 for every £1.20 collected and that's been the case for a few years now. That is an absolute fact. What makes it so ****** expensive is all the personal injury claims, youngsters pranging things (there's a large number of drivers in this bracket) and cretins that think it's ok to drive without insurance. When companies pay out on policies they pass their costs on to everybody else. As for price fixing that's comical there are strict codes of practice and an independent ombudsman.

Are you another brainwashed individual who's watching too much tv and re-gurgitating all the tosh feed by the corporates ? No company will ever be in bussiness if they make a loss, they will re-profilate or cease trading ! The truth is that the insurance companies are gambling with our money on bad deals on international trade markets and when they get-it wrong they are expecting joe public to fork the bill ! It's been like that for centuries ! They do however report big proffits at the end of the financial year ! Private equity firms don't give a toss about their customers however they care about their share holders. Ever watched Godfellas or Casino ? There's a lot to learn IF you read between the lines in those movies...
Did the insurance companies ever released a copy of their mathematichal algorithms on which they base their quotes ? There's no regulating body out there and don't mention the financial ombudsman, when fines are given is usualy just to divert the public opinion from more serious facts ! This is Houdini's missdirection taken 2 steps further my friend !

Holy **** fella you need to lay off the conspiracy theories. I have friends that work in the insurance industry (and not at the telephone to public side of the fence) and the information comes straight from them and if they're brainwashing me they done a damned good job of doing it to themselves as well. Of course insurers investe the money they collect, that's just good business sense and if they didn't our premiums would be a Hell of a lot higher than they are at present.

FACT
Insurers pay out more than they collect from premiums at present

FACT
Insurers have strict guidelines to abide by

FACT
There is an independent insurance ombudsman to make sure they do what they should and the insurers don't like dealing with them as it hurts them financially. I know this as I had a claim that I escalated to them and resulted in having the payout on my vehicle increased 5 fold

FACT
Young drivers are a high risk and as such suffer high premiums

FACT
Insurers pay out huge sums of money to fraudulent personal injury claims

Before ******* and moaning about how bent the insurers are start complaining about the morons that smash cars to bits that they don't have the ability to drive, the cash quick PI claims companies that hike the cost of minor crashes, the cretins submitting false injury claims for their quick £2k and the inconsiderate scum bags that drive about without bothering to insure their cars as they are by far the biggest reasons your policy is so much

Insurance is extortion, but at the end of the day we have gotta pay it and get on with it, i payed 3k last year and will probably pay something similar again this year

I used to be sour but eventually i have just come to terms with it... insurance is high because i am young, i dont have a lot of driving experience or NCB, and I have been driving fairly high insurance group cars, hell if i was a insurance company, i probably would charge me a small fortune too lol!

Any car with a Turbo, petrol or diesel will be expensive to insure for an 18 year old. Try a 1.6 petrol .

Im 18, 1 years no claims and have been driving around a year and a half now.. for my 2.0 tdi 8p sport I've got insurance for £1490 for 10 months.. Its a short policy but they count it as a years once the 10 months is up, so a quicker cheaper renewal for me. I wouldn't of thought an A4 would more made much difference, in fact i did a couple of quotes for an a4 and they weren't unreasonable (certainly no more than £2k). If I were you buddy I'd get a years no claims and then come back to it, I wouldn't of even considered any sort of audi as my first car ( although i did learn in my subaru ;) insurance was £1500 as a learner then went up to £7000 once I passed). The very cheapest car i've found to insure is a classic beetle.. thats what i gained my 1 years ncb in!

These insurance threads make me laugh. If you can afford the car and the insurance do it.............quietly. No one is bothered especially folk like me that have full no -claims, advance driver for bikes and cars and pay £265 fully comp + protected for a group 18 car - and no I am not in the help the aged class (40). As said before its thanks to young, immature and highly inexperienced drivers that make the premiums go up. Obviously false claims for ouch Ive got whiplash accounts for that too. Trying to impress the girls/boys with the new wheels just makes you look a to55er when you stove it around the corner coz u can't drive to the conditions. Did I or the majority of guys when I started driving go out and buy RS 500 Cosworths......eh NOPE!!!! They were expensive to insure but affordable but the majority wanted driving experience so that you knew what to do in the event of losing control or skidding etc etc. My 1st car was a mini to get my no-claims up. Had it for 2 yrs then started to improve on cars.

There is NO point in complaining regarding insurance......no one is listening......the situation is going to get worse so if your thinking of buying a descent car then man-up, get it insured and enjoy........Without wingin!!

Rant over.

Ok so a few pointers when looking at your insurance...

General insurance - Many companies are Underwritten by insurers, some companies are underwritten by many insurers making them brokers eg, Lloyds TSB or Halifax ETC.. So when looking through quotes check the underwritter.

Renewal - Keep in mind when your renewal date is due, as looking in advance on comparison websites can save you up to £150. Rates change constantly so if you save a quote on the 1st jan for the 30th it might be £500 whereas if you look for quotes on the 17th for the 30th it could be £600.. so planning ahead can save you lots (I did this for S3 Rav and he found cheaper rates in advance)

Fresh quotes - comparison websites look through different companies or brokers who give you the best price within your demands and needs. When inputting your data check a few things such as

Marital status - Saying your single can increase your risk, If your married then it may reduce your premium especially if you add your Mrs to your policy can reduce your premium drastically. If your partnered or co-habiting it can also reduce the risk and premium so play with your options.

Use of another Vehicle/ home owner - This can reduce the risk of your policy simply because you have driving experience of another car/ you own a home which shows your financially stable (somehow) therefore reducing your risk.

Occupation - this Really does matter... Your occupation (no matter how professional) can really affect your premium. Saying your a chef can increase your risk.. If your an cook however can reduce that risk. think of the many options that relate to your job title and see the price difference. If neccesary go back and chose a different occupation to see the premium change.

Claims and convictions - dont lie! Lots and lots of companies use the CUE system which is the Claims underwriting exchange. Its a database of claims youve had and they check this often.

Car purchase date - the longer you've had your car, the more experience thus lower premium sometimes.

Regular driver - This is the person who earns the NCD.

Additional drivers - adding other drivers can reduce your premium. I had my mum and bro in law on mine and because they are seen as more experienced, it can lower your premium. If your married, then get a quote with your wife/husband on the car as it can half the risk and sometimes the premium.

Mileage - On comparethemarket.com the 4000 mile mark seems to be cheaper than other options. sometimes when you lower your mileage it can increase the risk somehow, so play with the option.

Night parking - Now this can play with your premium alot. Depending on where you live, if you select public road it can be cheaper then selecting "Garaged" so again play with this option so you can determine the best option for you.

Address - Risk address can really affect your premium depending on claims made around your area and underwritting risk assesment in your area (crime etc). If its expensive, its time to move lol. generally if you live closer to the city centre its more expensive. EG. CV1 is more expensive than CV6. this May not apply all the time though.

Theres some things you can look at, if i remember any more then i'll add to it but one thing.. Please do not make obvious lies on your policy because you can be caught out and wrong information on your policy could void it. so if you had a claim and they find out that you have had a claim/conviction or that your not the regular driver of your car then it can repudiate your claim!! The above is only an advisary on what each option means.

I paid £1635 for my a3 1.8TQS at 18, renewed Oct last year (19) and it was about the same. that was with RAC. Also, try taking your parents off, as i did this with mine and my policy went down.

Also check to see whether or not the insurance company has dropped Business into the equation. This happened to me. I asked for Social and domestic and what I got was Social, domestic, Commuting and business. The difference was amazing. I dont use my car for business and never used it for commuting to and from work. Made a big difference after I got it removed from the policy. Always double-check that what you wanted on the policy is on the policy and no more (unless its a freebie.......yeah right!!!!)

got insured on a 2.0 tdi quattro 170bhp at 19 with 0 years NCB for £1500 with admiral multicar.
