2.0 TFSI Known Oil Consumption problem - 2015 ongoing thread (2009-2011 models)

Like someone said on here there is no consistency on this... I haven't a clue what's going on now, just getting fed up as not getting anywhere, it's been a month now since the car failed the test :(

I agree but I would phone Audi UK everyday until you got through to someone who knows what there doing. The woman I spoke to yesterday couldn't have been more helpful. Get them to phone Audi Manchester and get them to speak to the service advisor.

I would phone up Audi UK and complain. Virtually everyone nowadays is getting an instant response - I know I did !

Yeah I did guys, Audi UK phoned Manchester Audi today and advised them to call me with an update which they did. However the story has changed again, now Manchester Audi are saying my information was submitted to an incorrect email address for Audi UK, which also doesn't add up as how many cases have Manchester Audi been through up till now?

Apparently I should get some answers in the next few days. I have a full Audi service history bar the last one, so if they refuse and I have to pay anything I'm gong to kick off big style..

You should be ok- I've not seen anyone asked to pay recently apart from by a dealership who didn't know the process. Again, if you're asked to pay, get back on to Audi UK

Anyone reading and experiencing any oil problems related to this thread should always call Audi UK Customer Services and get a case assigned first.

The dealers don't like that and I was told many times by a Service Advisor not to contact them when my car first went in. They even said it could affect any contribution towards the repair!
So I called them immediately and ultimately got the car repaired for free...

Audi UK insist on using their customer services at Audi UK email address however if you have an assigned case manager then it's their name at Audi UK.

By the way that's the email of one of the customer relations managers. You didn't hear it from me though... :racer:

I have read this thread. Audi UK looks like much better than Audi Australia. My 2010 Audi A5 2.0T L has just traveled 3,5000km. Deal to the car has no Audi Dealership services history, Audi agrees only contribute 70% of parts of the repair. The manager of Audi customer care were very tough, told me that no matter what i do, that is their final decision. its up to me accept it or not.

Hi jay, where do we start here mate..? Aussie rules...
Your car should be fixed the same as every other car has! Your piston geometry, piston and conrods are shagged like every other TFSI produced in Germany!!
It's literally a way of getting Audi to admit it now. It is slowly getting resolved in every country so Don't lose the faith. Once fixed these cars are awesome..
Get them to give me a call mate... ;) I'm happy to explain....

Hi all.

It's been a few weeks since my 2nd stage test and the garage I bought the car from (not audi) have agreed to cover the cost of the repairs so I've not bothered chasing audi UK for the free repair because I just don't have the time.
Although I kinda feel like I should just because I think Wakefield audi are conning a £300 service out of the dealer. I've done enough chasing about up to this point with the dealer and audi Wakefield and frankly can't be bothered.

Booked in for 14th sept and looking forward to the drive to Wales on the 21st (I've been told the rebuild will take no more than 3 days).

That's me done 160 miles for part one of the test and the MMI hasn't moved yet , normally it would have dropped by now , seems a bit weird !

I did call Audi UK first and they just asked me which Audi centre was the nearest and said they would put me through as the centre will deal with it. Audi UK did say if I need anything from them to call back.. I was just following their advise.

Audi UK do not seem to have case managers any more. I think Charles has left now. They just push the contact back down to the Audi Centre who they "say" are fully empowered. It seems many centres still "claim" they have to get Audi UK's clearance on the repair - my experience was the local service manager saying -"yes you failed the stage 2, we just book it in for the repair".

My car went in today for the engine repair and chrome pipe clean up - this is the courtesy car I got for a week. Happy times !

I strangely had a dream that I needed a new engine as the bores were scored last night. Worst wet dream ever!
Hope it's not a premonition as my oil level has dropped too..

Mine went in today for engine rebuild no questions asked after it failed the 2nd oil test, brand new A4 TDI courtesy car for 2 weeks.

Not bad for a privately bought car now with 131,000 miles on the clock.

Audi seem to have finally got their act together dealing with this issue once and for all !

I've still not heard back after failing the oil test on the 30/07/15 so I'm not getting any decent service, I have to chase it up all the time, I don't think audi have rang me once with an update of their own backs

Damn. Mines asking for another litre of oil after 2000 miles after the rebuild. I swear I am going to torch this thing !!

Worked out that since my recent service I have driven around 750 miles mostly consisting of town with a bit of motorway. The Oil level has dropped one segment on the MMI so probably not as bad as yours! - So definitely happy with that!
Up to one litre of oil between servicings may now be the norm again...

Does anyone know if 2.0 TFSI "BPJ" series engines suffer this piston geometry issue?

My 2011 (61 plate) A6 avant has just failed an oil consumption test (0.6L per 1000km), but the Audi garage insist this issue only affects newer TFSI engines in the "CDN" series.

So they want to bring it back in for 2 days to investigate the PCV valve and other possible causes (the servicing rep couldn't be specific what else, without master tech advice).

updated on mine, had to chase Audi UK again to kick Manchester Audi, but on the phone they said the work has all been approved from their side, so got a phone call today from Manchester Audi, and apparently they don't have the parts in the UK and have to order them from Germany so I have to wait 4 weeks before it goes in, which just stinks of putting me to the back of queue as they aren't making money on me... A few guys on the this thread have had the oil test done after me and already got the cars in being worked on..

Oh they can only give me a A3 as a courtesy car, no offence to A3 owners but I have a family and would prefer at least a salon or bigger :(

Keaney suggest you get back on to Audi UK. My dealer had no issue with parts and I believe they are instructed to do a like for like courtesy car.

Just have rang Audi UK, and they can't really do anything. It isn't like for like, just that they have to keep the customer mobile. Also regarding parts they are saying the lead times are about right if the parts aren't available in the UK. I'll just have to wait I suppose.

had the same issue, bud. i was really fretting because every 100mile or so i checked and there was still no change, i was beginning to thnk they'd overfilled or doctored the MMI :-D ended up doing a fairly sudden drop in the space of about 25 miles or something, and did fail the test by the time i went in for the check at 620.

Am currently in the Ukraine but got a text yesterday with a link to Audicam showing my car being checked over following the repair. Won't be back to collect it till Tuesday

Any more information mate?

I have said previously through this thread that I believe it's becoming a common problem with the TFSI engine!

Obviously it affects every car with a CDNC engine code however it's one of these problems which will continue to cascade. There are A1, A3, A4, A5, Q5's all affected by oil consumption issues so it's definitely following a trend..

My feeling is your car won't be cured by the PCV fix and software update.

By the way I have seen 61 - 14 plate TFSI A4's with just as bad oily exhausts as mine were before the repair. So I wonder if Audi have 'fixed' this problem as they say..
Only time will tell...

Hi all,i posted a couple of months back concerning my car having this problem..after listening to the excellent advise on here i carried out these steps.
1 FIRST contacted audi uk to explain.they were sympathetic and outlined what steps to take very clearly re consumption tests etc
2 contacted my local dealer audi halesowen to have the consumption tests done.
3 car failed the test, using 800 ml in 107 miles.,did not proceed to the stage 2 fix but told me they would send the paperwork off to authorise the piston rebuild job.
i was then awaiting an answer on the repair being authorised,..after a week of hearing nothing i again rang audi uk who chased it up.
the next day my car was booked in for the following month at audi halesowen to have the repair carried out, courtesy car supplied for a week.at no time was the cost of the rebuild mentioned,i asked had audi authorised the repair and was told a simple yes,so very happy!

my car was bought from a non audi dealer at 79000 with a full specialist history,5 stamps from specialist and the latest in may of this year at audi, it is currently under an audi service plan at halesowen audi,i did this within a month of buying the car because i plan on keeping the car and wanted it looked after properly.i'm not sure whether this impacted the decision to do the rebuild at no cost to me.

audi uk customer service have been exceptional in listening to my concerns and chasing things up,audi halesowen deserve a mention for thier excellent customer care also, from now on they will get all the business i can send their way,
in short my faith and confidence in the audi brand has been restored and im looking forward to my car performing like it was designed to once the rebuild is done,...having said all that i don't believe this problem should have ever come about,is very stressfull,im sure other tfsi owners appreciate the feeling of driving a "ticking bomb",but it's great to see audi are being genuinely helpful in correcting the issue/
just wanted to thank all the forum members esp MIKE J and others who have helped me with what steps to take,it's very much appreciated.

Got my car back today, bit of a **** up it seems around the collection so when I arrived only the sales guys in, the car hadn't been cleaned and no info around work done etc. Will call them back Monday to talk to the service department as I would expect a service stamp or something in the logbook around the work done and the fact the service interval has been reset on the Cars computer. Drives fine so the proof will be in the oil use I guess

Great result mate!
Glad to hear positive outcomes!!
For a lot of owners its been a long time coming..

To say I'm slightly concerned about the recent video footage i'm seeing is an understatement. Earlier in these posts I've noted that I too have had the same oil consumption issue. The car went in for the test and predictably failed. Audi Southend to date have been reasonable but i was a tad irked that they queried my recent service from an independent garage as they hadn't listed the "part numbers" (it was my technician that confirmed to me the engine misfire and the possibility of a worn engine, so go figure!). I did suggest that whilst they had it in their service area; why didn't one of their technicians verify the spark plugs, filers etc used were genuine parts? I was a bit incensed that they would think i would use mickey mouse parts on a car like this!!! At this moment in time they have agreed to pay 100% of the costs of the parts, i have yet to hear from them as they WILL be paying the labour costs as well, or its "watchdog" here i come. I will also def be asking them if they intend to replace the cam chain adjuster and tensioner as has been suggested in earlier posts. I am hoping they will also change the oil filter as twice now they have drained my oil and then just put it back in and topped it up! They have also left me at this moment in time with an oil gauge showing no oil on the MMI but it hasn't yet come up as a warning. This is why i never take my car to a main dealer for servicing! If anyone has any other valid points i should bring up when the car goes in for the rebuild i will be very grateful. Sadly this is one of those times when I'm glad my husband will be around when it goes in, as I get so fed up with the sales guys who always think they know best about these things and then look amazed when i have to correct them or ask them technical questions and they can't answer!

Don't hold me to this, but i have been told on a few occasions that they adjust the computer to take another half a litre so that your car will pass the test! I was a bit worried they had done this to mine as pre test it would use at least a quarter of oil in 150 miles, then suddenly after the software update it didn't! but sadly it did still fail the test.

All information points to the oil test involving weighing the oil that went in, and weighing what comes out. The computer level is very erratic and the warning light is not linked to the computer reading either - there are separate sensors. I don't think you should be concerned - Audi are honouring the need to repair the engines and it seems that it is the Audi Centres that are less knowledgeable about the situation.

Having received my car back today I thought I would let you know of my experience:

I purchased my 10 plate A5 S-Line 2.0 TFSi from a local used car dealer with 58k on the clock. At the time I was not aware of the potential piston ring issue. While I was waiting the week between placing the deposit and picking the car up, I started reading the forums and realised that my car fell within the window when the oil problem could occur. I had 2 Audi services in the service book, and an invoice for a Halfords service.

After driving the car for a couple of weeks (and thoroughly enjoying the experience) I noticed that the oil level on the computer had dropped. I had been reading the forums here and started to get concerned about the car and whether it had the fault. I immediately notified the dealer I had purchased it off, asked him if he was aware that it had the oil problem, and put him on notice under the Sale of Goods Act that I may have to come back to him if the car was faulty.

After another week, the oil level on the computer had dropped further so I contacted Audi UK to report the issue. They said that my chassis number, and therefore engine, fell within the window where the problem might occur and asked me to contact my local Audi centre. They said that the Audi centre were fully empowered to make the decision about whether the repair was covered by the Goodwill policy in place for the issue.

I contacted Jardine Audi in Hitchin who booked me in immediately for the 2 stage oil test. This consists of:
1. Replacing a breather hose
2. Replacing the "rocker box" or something similar gasket
3. Making a change to the ECU that changed the compression levels within the engine
(excuse my non-technical wording here, but that was the gist of it !)

They then weighed 4.6 ltrs of oil and put it in the engine. I was then instructed to drive the car for 600 ish miles and then return to them, or return earlier if the oil warning light illuminated.

I drove the car for the next week or so, carefully watching the oil level on the computer. At one point I had to contact Jardine Audi to ask for advice as I was due to make a 100 mile round trip and didn't know if the oil level would survive for that trip - they were not really clear about this and just re-iterated that I should return the car after 600 miles or when the oil light illuminated. I chose not to use the car for that trip, which was the correct choice in the end because the light came up on the Friday night after only a further 20 miles.

I turned up at Jardine Audi on the Monday morning, just as they opened, and presented them with my car, with the oil warning light illuminated. They got their driver to drop me back to my office. While there, the service manager said "if the second stage of the oil consumption test failed, the car would be booked in for the repair - as simple as that" - there was no mention of getting clearance for the work to be done from Audi UK.

I believe the second stage of the test was to empty the oil from the engine and weigh it to determine the amount consumed over the mileage traveled.

I received a call later that day to confirm that my car had failed the test and that it would be booked in for the repair under the Goodwill/Warranty policy. There was no mention or request for any payment towards the repair, or for the need to get clearance for it. They returned the car to me later that day at my office.

I enquired what was included in the repair and was told it included:
1. Replacement pistons
2. Replacement piston rings
3. Replacement conrod

After further enquiry I was told that it would also include the replacement of the Cam chain tensioner.

My car was given to Jardine Audi on the booked date and they gave me a Q5 2.0 TDi Quattro S-Line, Black edition, automatic as a courtesy car (Wow !). I was actually on holiday while the repair was carried out, but on completion, I received an email with a link to Audi-cam. The engineer had completed a video confirming that the engine repair was complete and that all was fine. He confirmed that the valet department would work on cleaning up my exhaust tips.

My car was returned to me a couple of hours ago and the courtesy car was taken away. I haven't had the chance to drive it yet, but I look forward to the drive home from work knowing that my car is (or should be) fixed. Jardine Audi, Hitchin have been very helpful throughout this experience - I've had a couple of minor issues with communication, but the general service from the Service Advisor has been excellent. I'm missing the paperwork to confirm the repair so will chase that up, but otherwise I can't fault the service both from Audi UK and from Jardine Audi in Hitchin.

For those of you dealing with Audi centres who seem uninformed on this issue, take heart, the solution is there and they just need knocking in line. Sometimes a call to Audi UK is required. It does seem like there is a difference between how the centres deal with this, which there shouldn't be.

I was seriously considering giving up on the Audi brand when this problem arose, but I now have my faith back - I trust this will continue to be the case.

Looks like a simple clutch replacement to me. Did you book it in for an oil test due to high consumption ?

Hi all.

Mines in for the rebuild at the moment and they called yesterday to say the water pump had a very tiny leak which the could replace at just the price of the pump £140, no labour. She did say the probably wouldn't advise changing it normally which I thought was odd but because there would normally be 3 hours labour it might be worth getting it done now.

I'm no expert but I haven't noticed any overheating in the 3 months I've had it so don't know how much of an issue it is to leave it. Should I notice anything else. Can anyone tell me a good reason to get it done.

Got a rather nice A3 quattro which apart from the size is quite smart.

yes my car is gettin repair due to high oil consumption. The list of parts was recommend for replacement. Just wanted to know if any users here who already have they work carried out been offer the same or similar.

The camshaft tensioner and adjuster are not part of the free of charge repair either.

No. Why would they replace the clutch when the fault usually lies with the piston rings. Seems a strange list of parts to me.

This will be a massive and costly headache for Audi if they don't replace the cam chain tensioner and adjuster!

Mine were changed in February along with the rebuild.

There's a fellow audi-sport.net member on the B8 forum who's just posted a thread on his 2010 TFSI with engine failure. This car has had the oil consumption repair a year and a half ago but I believe it didn't have the above parts changed. That will need confirming however if this is the case It won't be another rebuild but an entire new engine will be required:

http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/2010-2-0tfsi-quattro-engine-failure.253018/

For the cheap cost of a few extra parts Audi could eliminate the stress of owners having their cam chain jump destroying valves & pistons and ultimately having to go through a similar process again!

You listening Audi? There should be no inconsistencies across your dealer Network...

Think the service advisor has printed off a lot of **** in my opinion.
That's some health check there!

Just picked my A4 Avant back up from Audi Tamworth this morning. I rang them Tuesday and told them I was going away for the weekend this morning and they managed to do all the work in 4 days! Hopefully they didn't rush anything!
I made sure the cam chain tensioner/adjuster was done, and I was also due a minor service ( brake fluid change ) which they also did for free.
Was a bit strange that they weren't going to give me a receipt for the work done until I asked for it...
Car felt fine on the short journey home, so glad to get it back as I wasn't impressed with the brand new A3 TDI S Tronic courtesy car ( A4s are so much better! ).
I'll report back if I have any issues..
