I can supply and fit a full Contitech cambelt kit(tensioner, belt, relay roller and vibration damper), KWP water pump, aux. belts, 5 L of G12 antifreeze and a genuine thermostat for 450 quid all in. I also know them engines inside out and i can even come and do the belt on your driveway- if more convenient for diesel money- if within reasonable driving distance. I use full kit of genuine locking tools and i know how to time the pumps right... Audi does not do belts they just re-packing Contitech belts/dayco and Littens/INA tensioners and rollers in a new VAG branded box and charge you for the privilege. The parts are in excess of 350 pounds trade prices so thats where the money go. If you need more details please call Chris on 077 899 12128. Thanks

Cheers will look into this.

do you still offer the service of belt change and what area do you cover. regards Mick

I would only really trust adamss to be honest, as most of the dealers I have found have little knowledge of this engine.

Im already planning a trip down to London when my cambelt needs doing (not that adamss knows this yet!)

No problem chaps, in your own time ! However i need to adjust the prices a little, VAT has gone up a little since the advert- it's 2 years old ! It would be £480 ALL IN for full cambelt kit (including the vibration damper), water pump, 2x aux. belts, 5L of G12+ antifreeze, GENUINE thermostat and seal + computerized setting of the diesel pump. The price of the parts is what's bumping up the price, the whole job takes 6-8 hours and isn't easy.
I can still do it at the £450 rate but that will include a generic thermostat and seal, i had no issues with them as yet and i am running one on my car as well ! Please pm for more details. Hope this helps...
Chris.

I travelled down from east yorkshire, had a day out in london and stayed over night, and it was still cheaper than my local dealer! I trust chris (adamss24) impecably with these engines and will have no problem going down again in the future!

Thank you !

Adamss24, what would you charge me if I were to supply parts? could drop off and collect same evening on a weekend?
Also, I'm assuming this would also effect oil temp as my gauge barely moves, but also has a fault on VCDS. coolant varies from 60-80c
Thanks.
Wes

Chris, how's central Finland for you to do a 3.0 V6? :)
If you arrange a tuning session with Van Vught Tuning i would not mind a long drive...need to take my "new" v6 tdi (fjtwelve/Martin's old a6 quattro) to someone that understands how to tune/map a diesel properly ! Waiting for a set of injectors fitted with pp683 nozzles to come back from pop testing then i can work a little on the car sorting out the bugs !
Sold an engine to another finish chap a few weeks ago, if i knew he'll spend that much for shipping i would have brought-it there myself !

hmm. driving to the netherlands is still quite a hike though. Think I'm going to have to just rill my sleeves up and have a go myself :)
how much was the engine shipping by the way? I managed to get a full interior on a pallet sent out for £400. It's crazy though. Worse for buying a car here or even buying parts, which is why I get all mine sent from the UK.

I wouldn't go non-genuine parts: either go VAG or if you're on a budget or can find one of the proper enthusiasts on here to help you...

I got mine done at Walton Audi: I know the quote I had nearly 2 years ago was about £750 and the revised quote when I got it done last May was higher, but I don't think it was much more than the VW price you mentioned - a sniff under £800... Epsom Audi, part of the same group quoted me over £1100 when I first got the quote form them 2 years ago and my local indy was about £600 at the same time (using genuine parts), but due to personal timings it was going to be a few days from drop off to collection and I fancied a nice new Audi as a courtesy car :)

Plus it always looks good in the log book and it's nice to know that if something goes "pop" on your way home, you'll be able to get the car towed straight back to them and tell them to fix what they broke - which you can't really do if one of the lads on ASN is doing you a favour - given how messy it can be if something goes wrong after cambelt work, I figured it was worth paying the extra for and I've decided it's an "acceptable cost" of running a 10yr old car that I'd like to keep runnig for a while longer yet!

I don't know for sure as i only put the engine on a pallet and drove it to Lakeside, there's a shipping company called Agile and the danish importer is called Cargo 2000 which relayed the engine to that chap. I bet it cost about the same what they've quoted you as well !
It was a full engine which i had for sale for ages on a few forums for £350 and it was complete minus the clutch and flywheel. As soon as i sold it i had 3 more inquires...
Will get a few quotes for parts for you...

Lostbook, i would not take my cars to dealer for any work but just to wash my car ! Don't get me wrong but i've seen a load of shody work in my time... The price dealer quotes you and then belt break and they will blame it on the relay roller or water pump which has not been changed at the same time with the cambelt is very unlikely to yield any results ! I have had 2 genuine thermostats and 2 genuine refurbished water pumps failing within the 2 years guarantee and guess what they blamed it on ? Anything but the water pump or thermostat. Once they blamed the viscous fan then they even had the cheek to tell me the block is heavily corroded or even cracked !
Also the VAG group does not make belts, they just re-package them and charge you over the odds for it. Dealer need to get back to their senses and put their labor rates way lower as these cars are over 10 years old now.
Just my 2 pence worth...

Not sure which dealers you've been talking to, but I'm pretty sure they're not supposed to change the cambelt without doing the waterpump at the same time! Even my local indy said that if I was desperate to cut corners, he would, but couldn't guarantee the work as it wasn't being done as recommended: but then he said the same when I wanted him to fit the cross-drilled Brembo's on my old Golf :)

Not all dealers are the same: I had some really horrible service and heard pretty ropey stories about VW and Audi dealerships in my area, I just happen to have found a decent one - sounds like you've found some pretty horrendous ones if they were willing to do a cambelt without the waterpump...

Not sure if all delaerships do it and I know their basic hourly rate is already fairly high, but I think they're supposed to give a 30% discount on labour rates (takes it down to close to the Indy rates)... but then, since you're also in London you'll know how our hourly rates are astronomical compared to once you get out into suburbia / outside the M25... I guess that makes Audi comparable to the locla Indies... I'll go and dig out the receipts, but my motorbike at BMW Park Lane is about £160/hr!!

I wonder what are they replacing for the money, parts are over 350 quid on their own, you sure it's not just the belt on it's own ? There's quite a few items which require replacement on the 2.5 v6 tdi which are very pricey aftermarket let alone genuine parts (same stuff different box!).
I would give them a call if i was you, i will go there and have mine done on the next v6 i buy !!!

By the way, the 3.0 Tdi has a chain driven timing AND a ribbed belt to drive the high pressure pump ! I reckon they are just replacing the belt (£30) and tensioner roller (£50). Full timing belt kit includes a relay roller, vibration damper, a injector pump belt and tensioner... They might be just checking the rest of the bits or call you during the work to ask for permission to replace the rest as they're funked !

I'm only sharing my finds dude...........

my belts done 35k now,so it will be a while before i need to consider it,but I'm with you on garages, the idiots at one never replaced the thermostat when my cars belts were done.....considering its position its stupid not to eh...........

so yeah... with all the extras they might try sneaking in when your cars in bits, it might be a price that gets inflated...

it would be best to call them and quote all the parts that you quote in your price,......might be £600 plus then eh.......but still good for people up glos/worcs

No problem mate, it's just that i do work on them on a daily basis and done a fair few, there's 6 hours labor minimum and the full parts are the best part of 350 quid... Many times i replace a cam-belt and i find the aux. belt tensioner bracket is worn out and the drive belt is about to jump off the pulleys (the tensioner requires a rebuild after 150k or so) which means a new cast braket + bushes + bolt (if you're lucky that the spindle isn't seized and the braket isn't worn beyond repair !) + most times the drive belt pulleys/rollers will be dry and it's daft not to replace whilst the front is off. It's 2 metal pulleys and 1 plastic roller for the drive belt and another metal tensioner for the A/C belt...about 30 quid each more or less + 2 belts (one £17 and the other a tenner ) !
Costs mount up rather quickly !

I got in contact with the garage that are doing the above offer, asked for a quote on my 3.0 v6 quattro
£299 plus vat for cambelt, tensioners, rollers and new waterpump and genuine g12 coolant, so the offer is genuine and is quite hard to believe but there you go !

i think the garages are having to drop prices in certain areas,to keep the work bays full.plus they might add a few oohs and aahs and you need this and that as most garages try to do,to hike the percentage of profit up on the job.

ultimately though theres no point having mechanics stood round doing nowt.....and if 4/5/6 bay garages start laying mechanics off it bodes bad for future business in my opinion.

btw which garage did you ring ?

id go to C&R in nottingham. VAG specialists for over 20 years and really know their stuff. Cheaper than dealers and much more thorough.
