Hi all

It’s my first time here so go easy :)

I’m looking to buy a particular 2008 2.0D A6 but can’t figure out if it’s the 140 or 170bhp version?

Is there any easy way to tell? I have the VIN and engine number. Test driving it it feels a lot quicker than a 140 and far more like my old 181bhp bmw 320d.

Thanks

There probably are subtle differences that an A6 expert would recognise - but none have come forward. For example on my 170 car the front discs are larger, different turbo/intercooler, clutch and even the injectors. You can insert the collection of 3-digit codes into the following site (from label stuck to boot floor and in hand/service book). Basically you are looking for the figure 125 KW (170 BHP). Failing that of course, any dealer should be able to help from the VIN

Hi @Dan chapman if you look on the PR code sticker there it will tell you on there the engine power in Kw. You can then convert it.Copy of this in the service book and usually somewhere in the boot, spare wheel well area.

This site usually gives you details of a car just from the number plate. Gives you the VIN and engine code as well as PS and KW rating.

To convert kw to hp roughly divide the KW reading by 0.75. So 100Kw = 133 bhp
The car may have been mapped, A 140bhp will map to around 180bhp.

And drive better than a 170 because of it's smaller turbo & remapping refinement .

Thanks guys. Well I managed to get hold of the V5 briefly and it actually says 103kw which I think equates to 140bhp.

However, the car really does feel like it has a lot more (driven back to back with a 140bhp insignia, although I realise that power delivery can be very different).

I’m now umming and erring about whether to go for it or get a more sensible option of a Mondeo?! A6 has done 125k Miles, fsh (80% Audi dealer) , has had timing belt done a few years back (will need doing again).

However, it’s had 4 owners and the last one only had it 2 months - the garage selling it claim he needed a 4X4 for work and p/x it!

Hmmm
