Hi

Im after some advice. I got the front pads done on my car before I left for a trip to France. Now that I am here, when I reverse and brake I hear a 'clunk' as if something moves. I don't have any tools with me so the best I can do is a visual check. I have noticed however that I am able to rock both the calipers ever so slightly. I am only talking a mm but it is enough to make a similar noise.

Should they allow a very slight amount of movement or should the be rock solid?

Thanks

Mike

The calipers shud be pretty much locked to the hubs...

They're floating calipers as such iirc, were the spring clips bent at anytime before refixing to the caliper, if they lost any tension then this maybe why, remove caliper sprung loaded clips, give them more tension, reaffix & then test.

Also the clonk could be the pad moving in the caliper, as mine did before I got some material to put in the caliper & pads, which got rid of the clonking immediately.

Now it wasnt the back of the pads either, its where the ends of the pads sit in the caliper themselves, I cut some small squares out & after cleaning the location out of grease & grime, I stuck these where the pad sits & ground down the pad ends just enough so they still slide in/out ok.

Give this guy a shout, he'll send you some sticky pads dirt cheap, they're known as SHIMS when you chat to him, worked wonders for me if used correctly :Steve Liversedge [Steve@racepads.co.uk]

Thanks for both your replies.

As mentioned I am in France at present so don't have access to any tools. It was a reputable Audi specialist who did the pads so I would expect him to know what he is doing. Hopefully it is just the pads moving slightly in the callipers

I will have to hope it is safe and take it back to the garage next week.

Ah ha...that’s where you plan falls to pieces... as a specialist of course he did the job and test drove the car.....lol

I agree 100% with Nige check you spring tension but i assume they fitted new springs . I also think the pad is dragging back in reverse because they have not yet bedded in, possibly because the disc is worn at the edge so the pad is canting as it bites. a dob of copper slip behind the pad and once they have bedded in they will be fine. Remember once bedded in the pads will lift of the discs but while they have to conform to a worn disc they will drag back in reverse.
Nothing to worry about.
