Is the following good for my 2.5tdi?

'Meets or exceeds the requirements of the following specification: API SL/CF ACEA A3/B3'

Cheers

I always use the QUANTUM 5W-40
part number from TPS nationwide
ZGB 115 QLB 00 521 (thats for the 5 litre) its about £20-£25 per 5 litre bottle .The 5 litre will be enough for an oil change .
or castrol edge its the same just rebranded

Have a read through the following - its a good read and will explain all!
Car Bibles : The Engine Oil Bible

Car manufactures have tough emissions laws to comply with, thus specifying an oil which traps soot / blows less carbon.etc
All we care about here is the lubrication qualitys, so forget API ratings - A3/B3 is a good oil, however 99% of oils have this rating.

Trust me on this - just get a decent quality 5-40 and change every 7/8000 miles, I can recommend shell helix ultra in the 2.5TDi.
Fuchs race pro s is a very good oil (ester based) however it may be expensive for a 2.5TDi over 200,000 miles.
I replaced my cams 30,000 miles ago, been using shell helix ultra 5-40 ever since, had the heads off the other week - not a sign of wear on the cams whatsoever + the heads are a lot cleaner than they were!

it really needs to state meets spec vw 502 or 505 (can't remember which one but i'dnot rely on the spec you mention but look for specific ref to vw 50*).

interestingly i've always used 5/40 on 1.8t's (quantum) but my garage suggested 5/30 would be better - i've always looked for the vw502 / 505 spec but what are people putting in their 1.8t's ...

audi uk specification is 5w30 not 5w40
however a lot of u,s cars run 5w40 due to the hotter climate

the fuch oil is very very good , wasnt so keen on the castrol edge

should a 1.8t be running 5/30 fully synthetic or semi synthetic?

I was told by a couple of vw/Audi specialists that the best thing to do is use a longlife oil but change it on a shortlife interval. That's what my car has been on all it's life as I'm lucky enough to have a stamped up service book of intervals every 10k miles.

The service book for our engine states longlife vw spec of 506.00 or 506.01

My car is due an oil change in a couple of thousand miles and I'm looking into using a different oil to the quantum that it's currently running, ideally I'd like to use a castrol magnatec oil next to see how that goes as I've always rated magnatec for its 'clinging' properties on the head/cams etc which will only be a benefit in my eyes as the mileage increases on my stock cams, but I'm finding it hard to find a magnatec that meets the vw spec of 506.00/01 can anyone recommend another vw spec magnatec that would be safe to use on my car? To be honest it doesn't really need to be a longlife oil as it gets changed every 8-10k anyway.

Ive used Shell Helix Ultra in another car before and I also liked that, as said above it does actually clean the inside of your engine as it has the same sort of cleaning agents in it as their v power fuels, so I wouldn't mind trying that in my 2.5 either really.

1.8t will run fine on 5w30 but i wouldnt use semi synthetic i would use fully
i would not use castol magnatec in any of the vag cars , its not a good oil for them
5w30 fully synthetic is spot on

5w30 is spot on in what? 1.8T's or 2.5 TDi's?

Would a 5w40 not be better for higher mileage as it'll be slightly thicker when warm?

5w30 is is the correct grade for the majority of vag cars be it diesel or petrol
the only advantage the 40 grade has is its ability to operate at higher temperatures

the important part is the 5w as this is the viscosity index the lower this is the easier it is to pump round the engine when cold

and as many people are aware most engine wear happens at start up because of low oil pressure

Yeah I knew that about the first number on the grade being the important one out of the two, but the figures also determine how thick the oil is at given temps, i.e cold start up and normal running temps.

This is why I like magnatec cos it really does cling to the top end of the engine so the cams and valves are already well lubricated before you turn the key.

So why wouldn't you recommend magnatec in a vag car then?

i personally wouldnt use the magnatec because of how it is made
it is a cracked oil which then has synthetic additives to give it its properties
as opposed to an ester based oil which then has additives to give it its properties

there are 4 or 5 differant versions of 5w30 engine oil made by castrol "magnatec" only the c3 version is suitable for your car
as this is the only only one which has a vw oil spec (all be it an older one )

I use Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W40 in my car (2.5 Tdi) and this is very important bit: VW 505 01/ 505 00/ 502 00 so far performs is great. In my previous car used Valvoline once and switched to Castrol straight away. So this time Castrol 5w40 only

If you want your cams to last a while then i will stick to a 505.01 spec 5w40 fully synthertic oil in your v6 tdi and keep the revs high !

I use 507 genuine long life and change it on short life. Will that be ok?

At the weekend my local motor factors wanted to know the service plan my car was on in order to advise the oil, I didn't know and just stated that I wanted to oil change it every 8-9k miles for longevity. They had noted to use 5w30 on the longer interval and 5w40 on the shorter interval, this is on a 1.9 tdi engine though, I went ahead with the 5w40 as I guess they have very up to date info and can there really be that much difference in it once it's been through a few heat cycles around the engine??
Oh, both oils types were PD engine specific so meeting 505.01 or greater spec.

I'm just using 5w30. Just ordered 10 litres too :(
5w30 wont do harm, it's just better to use 5w40 if you're driving your car enthusiastically or you want to minimize the wear on the car. Thinner oil is made for reducing pumping loses through the engine, however it's main specification was for extended interval which means it needs to be thinner in order to counteract ash accumulation and thickening beyond specs !
As i said, i would even use a thicker oil if possible but also high in zinc if you use the car hard as i do, however 5w40 does really well in my cars...

hi all i have recently changed from castrol edge fst 5w30 to castrol edge turbo diesel fst 5w40 in my 1.9 tdi its on 137000 mile now so just thought a slightly thicker oil would do it no harm . its been in about a month now and seems to have made the engine sound smoother mpg seems the same so i will be sticking with this now and costs the same as the edge 5w30

I am using QX 5w 40w fully synth in my 2.5tdi and in the wifes Bora V5w which is now on 176k and has hardly used any oil since a change 1200 miles ago.The 2.5tdi sees happy too.Eurocarparts were selling 5litres for £12 incl filter so have a small stock now
