For about a year and a half my car has intermittenetly been badly misfiring when idling and more worryingly when I fully accelerate it starts to judder (quite difficult to explain, but something like me trying to accelerate in too high a gear, starts to sort of wheel spin, but if you keep the foot down it pushes on and then drives as normal). As I say it has previously been an intermittent problem, but in the last 3 months is happening on a daily basis.

One thing I have noticed is that these problems only occur once the engine is warmed up. When starting from cold it runs fine for the first five minutes or so.

My car is an ex fleet, and has done a rather xcessive 166,000 miles to date.

Anybody got any ideas, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have you had a diagnostic on the car? If not i suggest you get one done first, secondly it could be the'flywheel',the wiring loom that runs into the cylinder head, etc.

Hi mate,

Thanks for the response. As of yet I haven't had a diagnostic, but am going to book in next week. When problems first started about a year ago I took it to a Audi specialist here in Leeds, who did a diagnostic on it, but they said that no fault had come up but did acknowledge that there was a misfire and suspected that it might need a replacement fuel injector wiring loom. However as they weren't entirely sure if this was the problem I was understandably reluctant to part with the £140 they wanted to charge to carry out the work. I was actually going to book it in, but a day or two after booking it in I dunked a bottle of redex in my fuel tank and law and behold it started running fine so I cancelled the replacement of the wiring loom. Unfortunately however this fix was temporary and appproximatley 6 to 8 weeks later it returned to its previous less than fully fit state! And at present it is at an all time low, much like my beloved Liverpool FC! YNWA. (I hope my footballing allegiance hasn't deterred any prospective helpers!)

mine did this and mines done 170,000 ended up replace the fuel pump on the side of the head.

you need to check the fuel quantity on idle when warm mine was 2. somethink and now is 4. somethink

I am a complete novice on any motor related issues, so forgive my lack of knowledge, but how do I check the fuel quantity? I assume it's just one of the dials on the dashboard right?!!

Just out of interest how much did it cost you to sort out the replace fuel pump?

Cheers

I had the same problem on mine but part of the issue was the flywheel. once i replaced the flywheel and clutch its still had and uneven idle but not as bad, so i had it checked for a software update from the dealer and there was one available. They had the car for about an hour and it runs perfectly now.

Thanks again for the advice. Can a software update make such a significant difference? Thats's mad! I have a policy of avoiding dealers, so if I can't get it sorted elsewhere they will be my last resort.

Anybody got any idea on how much I'm looking at to get a fuel pump replaced as it appears that this is the most likely cause of my problems.

Cheers

Hi Mate,

I've just had what sounds like the same problem on my A3, was misfiring, on a dual carriage way in 4th gear wouldn't do over 80mph, and was struggling like mad. Put the Redex cleaner in that helped for a week, but then back again. I blamed the supermarket diesel I put it, but after putting it into Audi they had nothing on the diags, but the mechanic had seen this before, replaced the fuel filter, and it's now running perfect!

Try Changing the fuel filter, they are quite cheap and easy to do. or Audi should do it on your next service!

Wish it was that simple! Had diagnostic today, misfire on injector 1. All others were fine, going back saturday for definite response as could only plug in computer today and not change injectors around due to time constraints. Anybody know anywhere cheap for injectors as stealers quoting a ridiculous £550!

when i tested my car with vag com it said injector 1 was out of tolerance so i had all 4 inhectors changed and i changed the injector loom and it was just the same.

my probelm was that when i first started my car it would be fine for five mins then once it started to get warm it started to miss but was ok when driving.

If your not to far from me im in Rugby, warwickshire i can plug vag com in for you and test the injection quantity on idle for you.

as soon as i changed my fuel pump for a second hand one which cost me 50.00 it was fine and had no probs since over 4 weeks ago

mine is high milage 170,000 miles and runs like a dream now and i have also been told by alot of diesel experts that the injectors in these cars are very reliable

theres a set of injectors in the classifieds on this site for 100.00 if you want to get them but they need to be set up correctly which takes a few hours..

Thanks for all the responses guys. I can happily confirm thatmy problems have now been resolved all thanks to a new( very expensive) injector. I'm praying that the other three don't conk out on me now as my Mrs will go inasne if I have to foot another bill like this one!!!!

Thanks again.

If you want any more injectors let me know as i have a few sets laying around.
