Hi folks,
I could do with some advice regarding my wife’s 2009 (2010 model year) A3 1.6 Petrol (non FSI) , I went to start it yesterday and it seemed to start for a second then cut out instantly, and the instrument cluster remains blank with no signs of life.
After a few basic checks (jump starting, fuses etc) and a scan with my HEX-NET, I did some research on the symptoms and it looks as though there’s a problem with the instrument cluster. Apparently it’s pretty common and as the immobilisers in the cluster, it stops the car running.
The cluster had been beeping randomly over the past 2 months, I think approx 4 times total, but never presented a fault on the dash, I never got round to checking with VCDS.
The 2 viable options I have is to send her original cluster off for repair at a reasonable expense, or buy a second hand unit (with matching part number for simplicity) much cheaper and try to code myself with VCDS.
So my question is what would people recommend? Can get a second hand cluster to around £50 and code myself, or is it less hassle just to pay to have hers repaired for around £180?
I’m not sure what’s involved in adjusting mileage and coding the keys hence my hesitation to jump in and go for the cheaper option.
Any advice gratefully received!
