A4 2014 3.0 tdi chain rattle

Hi,

finally bought a 2014 A4 black edition 3.0 tdi, my luck, it has chain rattle… should have bought a 2.0…. Any way, hopefully getting it fixed under warranty but they are trying to get out of it saying this video is inconclusive and want to send out an independent technician, even though 2 garages have said it’s the chain.

I sent this video. Doesn’t really happen on start up, but sounds awful at 2.5k revs! This is chain rattle right?

It sounds like chain rattle to me. It would make sense for it to need replacing around that level of mileage. Some are luckier and go longer without being plagued by a continuous rattle like yours, but will typically experience a brief rattle on cold startup that goes away after a second or so. It's not a cheap job, and so I can understand why they don't want to do it. It's also an engine out job.

thanks for the reply. Warranty company have agreed the claim but I only have a limit of £1,000. Total price is £1820 plus I’m going to have the DMF replaced at the same time along with anything else the garage thinks could be done while the engine and gearbox is out!

I'd be surprised if the DPF needs replacing. Those are not at all cheap due to the valuable material that makes up the filter itself. You could ask them to clean it out while they're there, although most garages would do that simply by force regenerating the DPF using the engine's regen system.

I'm glad you've got something positive out of all of this. If it's in good condition, that engine will keep on trucking for a long time.

My chains needed doing on my 2015 a6, the garage where I bought it sorted it out but it was nearer to £4k

@Vappy - I’m having the DMF replaced (dual mass flywheel) while the gearbox is out, not the DPF.

@kev1973 £4K! Wow! My local vw audi specialist is an ex Bristol Audi technician and has done the job a few times. Lots of garages wouldn’t even touch it! Tensioners and chain kit is around £900 then about 20 hours labour.

Mine went at 101k looking back at the sevivce histrory quite a few were long life ones which apparently aren't good for the chain

Same. ****** longlife. Once it’s all done, I’ll look to do an oil change every 8k or so.

Unfortunately for us, they are designed to fail once the warranty is up. I believe it's the chain guide which fails.
They don't make 'em like they used to.
Built-in obsolescence!
But many still regard them as being "premium!"

Out of quite a few car manufacturers 9 times out of 10 it's the chain tensioner that's at fault first as being hydraulic and fed by oil , wear and tear and not a robust design for longevity .

Stop Strain if fitted and used will give it an even shorter life .
