A4 tdi engine problem

Just had my head gasket done and noticed I have a cracked piston. Been advised to replace the full engine. My engine is 1.9tdi pd engine 115ps. Engine code is brb bke. Does my replacement have to be exactly the same? Or could I buy the bottom half of another engine and use my head? If so, will it have to be the same engine code again as the avf awx engines seem the same?

Why don't buy a set of pistons and have a machine shop lightly hone the block ? It might cost the same as a 2nd hand engine but at least you know your engine and not take a gamble with an unknown lump.
What was the reason of the piston to crack ? Do you run a remap ?

Yeh it's re mapped. Still unsure as to why the piston cracked. I've just had a new engine fitted, but it's seems like its over fueling now, miss firing now aswel! I'm baffled!
