Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could help out with what sort of price I should be paying for a cambelt change on the above car. I know its not going to be cheap! but was wondering if there is much difference between main dealer and independent? Is it best trusted to the main dealer?

Also is there anything else that should be done at the same time?

Thanks in advance
Chris

It's a big job - the front of the car has to come off, meaning the bumper and radiators. Plenty of independents are capable of it - if you've got one you trust then go for it and enjoy a cost saving. I'm sure it doesn't need to be a VAG specialist but he will need special tools.

That said, there's a main dealer who advertises cambelt changes for a fixed price through eBay. Only a few hundred quid instead of £600+

I believe that it's worth changing the water pump and idler pulley while the cambelt is off.

The whole front end does not need to come off it can be slid forward as an assembly using two guide pins about 4 inches long. you remove the fixing bolts and replace them with the guide bolts. My local audi stealer quoted 1200 incl vat and labout for a cambelt change which was extortion in another form

depends where you are i paid about 340 quid including the waterpump and idler pulleys
if you can get a deal then go for it. I got my local independant to do mine as the water pump went as it wasn't changed at the last cam belt change. and as the cambelt comes off to do the water pump it made sense as it would need to be done in the next 10k anyway.

Forgive me - even sliding the front end forward four inches sounds pretty scary to me :)

From what i know its not as bad as it seems. however i still didnt fancy it as i cant be doing with the hassle and booked mine into my local indy here in basingstoke. Give him the headache instead of me.

Thanks for the replies, I think Audi in Inverness were qouting £500 odd which seems pretty good really if and independant is qouting around £400. I'll shop about thought before putting it in .

Thanks again
