A7 2016 Reverse Camera Retrofit

Morning all,

So I have carried out this retrofit in my A7.

Installed the rear view camera, kufatek fakra cable from boot to camera module then to the MMI unit as per Kufatek instructions.

I have VCDS so coded as per instructions also, but the camera is not working. It seems the issue according to VCDS is that 6C is not detected at all? Anyone have any suggestions why this might be?

I connected as per the instructions on the rear of the MMI grey plug.
Can high pin 6
Can low pin 12

These pins were already occupied on the connector so they have been spliced and connect to the existing wires that were in those pin locations is this correct?

On the fakra connector in the rear of the car that plugs into the camera module I have the following voltages on these pins..

Pin 10 12v
Pin 11 2.72v
Pin 12 2.27v

Does this look normal?

Should I check anything else? If the CAN bus is not recognising the module then the module itself might be faulty? I guess there is no easy way to test this?

Any help much appreciated or where to look if possible, carried out a search with not much info returned.

So vcds autoscan doesn't show the camera module as not registered?

Assuming you've coded other modules given 6C isn't detected?

Scan would be useful.

Just auto scanned the car and something is definitely not right...

One is a auto scan I carried out end of August just after I got the car, the other is today.
Now I am not sure why so many errors have occurred as the car has been not used at all since the two scans apart from a few trips.
The only thing that has really changed is the installation of the camera, module and wires. I'm thinking perhaps the CAN H&L wires I've spliced to the rear of the MMI on the grey connector on pins 6 & 12 are causing all these issues?

Coding as follows
Address 19 Added 6C to list
Address 5F Adaption menu display PDC Active
Address 9 Byte 35 Bit 4 Set to 1
Then carried out MMI reset with the buttons on the consol.

01/10 scan shows that you cannot talk to the camera module, which could be:

1) faulty module
2) faulty CAN connection
3) faulty power
4) faulty earth

need to bottom out this issue before you can progress.

edit:

your coding is incorrect also, not that it will matter until the module issue is resolved, but you need to activate VPS and set its bus also.

Hello DJ Alix,

So had another look at the connections behind the MMI just to be sure and low and behold CAN hi & low were incorrect!
This has now been rectified and I can now see the 6C module in VCDS.

I must admit I followed the Kufatek instructions which are pretty good but I got a bit lost towards the end with the coding and adaptions required, thinking that i had carried out the required steps.

So I have carried out another scan since the correction above and now getting the following..

Made some good progress today and I have got the RVC to work!

As DJalix said the Adaptions had not been carried out on the VPS so that has now been done.

In the CAN gateway I had two 6C's ticked and two 17's ticked so removed the tick on the first of the two and this rectified the faults I was getting.

Also sorted out the steering colum with a basic setting adjustment so all good apart from the dreaded 6C module.

So, i got to see the RVC in action on the display but without the guidelines which the optical parking assist showed, is this normal should they should up with the steering angle?

After a few seconds the screen then goes blank and the feed is gone. Went back into 6C and found the following fault codes (when cleared, the RVC works again but only for a few seconds and the faults are logged again)

Unfortunately at a standstill again with what to do next? I try to carry out the basic setting but I get the error "request is out of range"

Ok.. So I have gone over everything as suggested and rechecked my steps to ensure I've not missed anything.

1. Wires installed from RVC in boot handle to control module to MMI.
2. 6C Module installed in boot & connected to 12v+ constant rail & earth point.
3. Fakra cable connected from camera to module then to rear of MMI Blue quad lock plug PIN 6 - Video Cable PIN 12 - Shielding
4. CAN wires connected correct to grey quad lock connector PIN 6 - CAN High PIN - 12 CAN Low
5. Coded Address 19 added 6C (2nd one on list)
6. Coded Address 9 byte 35 bit 4 set 1
7. Address 5F adaption Menu display PDC Active
8. Address 5F adaption VPS active
9. Address 5F adaption VPS msg bus terminal 15
10. Reset MMI via control buttons
11. 6C coded to Audi A7 with optical park assist & logo lines integrated.

Basic setting is still required but I will get to that once the damn thing is working with no other errors.

I know it is working as if i clear all DTC errors and activate the camera via the dash button or selecting the R gear, up pops the camera with guidelines!
After a second or so, the guidelines disappear, then the camera display goes blank. I can repeat this if I clear the DTC again in 6C module.

So, I am thinking this is a software issue somewhere and not hardware based on this evidence.

Ok, just seen what the issue is. Did not spot it before as I have been viewing this thread via mobile and not a laptop. You have a newer vehicle (MY16 but was manufactured 27/11/2015) with an MIB2 Media unit and:

1) you are trying to retrofit a reversing camera, with external control module, for the older MMI vehicles.
2) while your chosen solution can be made to work you won't get guidance lines.

What you are trying to retrofit is a reversing camera with an A6 control module (4S0 907 441B) which is not really compatible. If you wanted to go the external module route, for Video input etc, then you should use a 4G0 907 441B.... however as you have an MIB2 you should really be using an all-in-one camera handle unit 4G0 827 566A.

As an aside, I can supply and fit the correct solution for you and also activate Audi Smartphone Interface given you have the correct MIB2 unit

Ahhh I did wonder, the more I looked into it the more I thought I had the wrong equipment for my year...

But as I had the items present and it seemed it could be made to work (albeit with the correct module) I decided to procceed.

Will remove the current module and see if i can recover some costs by fleabaying it and see if the correct unit is available.

As I've carried out the wiring already are the two systems varying in connections much or will it be a rip out and start again affair perhaps?

Rip your installation out and source the correct camera for your vehicle together with its wiring in order to start over. There are small connection differences but wiring is different as what you have installed uses two looms when the correct camera only uses one. Not worth muddling through with what you have. Looking at your factory records you have a nice car there, do this retrofit correctly so you don't have any further issues

Ok I switched video to 6 and 12 and "Video Signal Line" error code went off but still black screen. Sometimes screen shows something blurry but nothing clear.

Everything should be fine but no picture. Or do I have wrong control module or camera? I attached error codes on module 6C.

You have MIB2 media system which should have an “all in one camera” without external module but saying this it can be made to work as I have done this in the past. I would need to see true car however.
