Are the aftermarket filters like K&N any better than the standard replacement units since they average approx £36.

The way our airboxes sit close to the engine id avoid an Induction kit because they will just suck in the heat, I noticed a positive difference when I took my induction off and went back to factory airbox. As for panel filters I used to have a piper foam filter to fit my standard box but after few months swapped it back to standard because even though the uprated panel filter was ok, it was quite oily especially after the clean and re-oil procedure and I didnt want to risk mashin up my MAF.
