advice urgently required.
i recently purchased this car knowing it had a slightly noisy cam with a view in mind to replace the cams at the same time as replacing the cam belt etc. even had the parts ready to order.
i probably shouldnt have been driving it but yesterday i needed it to get to work and back so took it for a casual stroll up the motorway when suddenly it formed a very loud thumping noise, the entire car started to judder and vibrate hard and loss of power under load. i managed to get it home last night and checked VCDS where i found the pump timing all over the place and the right hand side of the engine compensating massively for the left side on injector flow at idle. thick black smoke under load and lots of diesel knock.
i had my suspicions on why i was getting such a bad misfire so today i removed the rocker cover on the OS of the engine and shock horror, found all of the rocker arms on the intake side shattered to bits. some fragments have ended up in the oil return galleries.
apart from one of the lobes which has lots of damage, the cams seem ok, also there was no sealant around the cover gasket which explains all the oil ******* out everywhere. suspecting its had work at some point by someone who didnt put it back together correctly. car has genuine 98000 miles which i checked through past mot history.
my question is, what is the most likely cause of this. at the moment im thinking the floating vernier has slipped and thrown the timing completely out but dont have proper timing tools to check. i also dont have a compression tester that can do diesel engines to hand.
my two most likely options at the moment is to swap the engine out as replaceing the head will cost the same money or to just sell the car as spares but im quite invested in the car now since bringing the entire suspension back up to standard.
