Hi guys I’m after some help if possible

I was driving my car the other day when all of the sudden my power steering had gone and I now have a red steering wheel up on the dash so I’ve taken it to the garage and they have said it’s the power steering rack !!! (#gutted) so I’ve been to euro car parts and bought the steering rack they have recommended does anyone know for certain what generation rack I should be having for my car as there are two steering racks on their website ?? it’s Audi A3 60 plate sline ..I’ve bought the REMY steering rack I think it’s generation 3 ?? Will this just go straight on ?? And also am I going to have to get it coded and what’s the damage on that if anyone can shred some light I be more greatfull money all the time it seems to be...

thanks :)

The rack is electric not the old style hydraulic power kind. Hope your garage is familiar with Audi’s and did a fault code read to see what codes have come up. It could be something simple rather than a new rack required, rack reset required, wiring problem, fuse or even the battery dying. If the latter, you would also have a problem starting the car and or lights dimming occasionally. My 2010 Sline had a new battery last year and if yours has never been changed in its life I would expect it needs changing about now, it’s 10years old. Best to have a second diagnosis before you throw£800 at it.

Hi mate thanks for the reply appreciate it :)..

What I had done basically is I had lowered my car on ap coil overs but hadn’t set them up all round?.. I just put them on to the lower setting and thought because it was at its lowest they wouldn’t need setting up by god I was wrong I’ve basically shot myself in the foot what an absolute plum !!! it was completely decked and I’ve caught the bottom on a speed bump .. and it so happens that I cracked the casing switch on my power steering rack so I’ve replaced the rack :( £££ ..witch is working fine now thank god !! but when I turn my car on its says faulty esp/stop and start on the dash , and the abs light is also on and the yellow steering wheel ?? The cars working fine just the lights are doing my head in lol does the rack need resetting or something ??? How do I go about doing that ??
Thanks mate

You need to run the alignment in VCDS for the steering angle sensor.

The Brake lamp and steering yellow icon is on because DSC & Traction Control with use the steering angle when modulating the hydraulics.

you need VCDS bottom line

It’s full lock left full lock right and three drive straight etc

Just ask at a few garages, the VCDS cables are cheap enough for them to have in their tools and the procedure is very easy, they may even have a clone which works just as well.

If that fails maybe someone nearby can lend you their cable or do it for you (there is a VCDS cable map). With COVID just be careful

Best if you go to an Audi/VW specialist. If you don’t know how to use VCDS. It does sound like a simple steering reset And shouldn’t cost more than£80. Even a main dealer charges £80 for a VCDS code read but may have a minimum charge for resetting the steering.

Hi guys thanks for the reply it’s in with a audi specialist now and they have said it just needs the alignment reset that’s all finally at the end of the storm lol !!! Thank you guys
