Apologies wasn't too sure where to post this but thought I'd post it here as it's the most active part of the forum, and although it relates to my dad's A1 I'm sure it'll be of interest to those here.

So hopefully the story might be enjoyable or interesting to some, I'll apologise in advance if some parts are named wrong, I'm not very au feit with these things.

So my dad picked up a brand new A1 (not new new facelift) at the beginning of this year, and from new it had an awful grinding sound when going in to 1st or reverse gear.

Now my dad's a driving instructor so this being an issue and the clutch being quite right was a struggle, but thought it'd loosen up after about 1000 miles or so he was told.

Anyway roll on about 5-6k miles later and the grinding gear changes were still a thing, so when he had a week off, he took it back to the dealer for them to sort. They claimed to have found the issue and said servo fluid (I believe it was) to be leaking on the clutch so they fixed this and installed a new clutch.

However the gear changes were still grinding and he was told this is normal, now it sounds far from normal but when you're not a mechanic it's hard to argue. So a few thousand miles later he takes it to our local independent Audi specialist who we usually use for servicing and he immediately identifies the issue as the synchromesh box

So some back and forth with Audi and they agree to take it in for a week, and try and find the fault. Bear in mind any time my dad's car is off the road, he's making no money being self employed. Anyway they say they can't find a fault and bleed the clutch and change the gear levering. They also claim to have tested the gear change on another A1 and the issue was present with that, so the grinding noise is normal. Issue got escalates to head of business who said they'd note the issue and if the car goes tits up later on, they'd fix it at their expense. Not ideal but at least some sort of solution.

Now my dad took it for its service today with said specialist and during which he noted that the near side CV boot was leaking, which was caused when Audi had the car originally (and had to have seen when they had the car the second time but ignored it) and nicked said part and so it had been leaking for a few thousand miles. The specialist also noticed that the clutch has not been replaced, as the bolts holding the gearbox together had been untouched.

So guess the purpose of this long rant shows that the expensive prices paid at these dealers aren't worth the paper they're written on. My dad's now in a position where he'll have to take another week off work so they can fix an issue that they caused and could have fixed when they had the car the second time.

That’s so poor, I’m really losing faith with Audi these days, it’s sad really but the decline in product and service is so clear to see. Your father should be compensated for loss of earnings, hopefully he’s documented both what Audi and the independent have stated.

Yeah pretty shocking I know! He's currently talking with the head of business about the faults discovered by the independent, he has photos and email chains, to prove what "Audi have done" so will have to see

At least he has a chain, fingers crossed he’s compensated accordingly.

I would write a complaint to Audi UK as well probably straight to the ceo exec team. The head of business is only caring about covering the dealerships a55.
There could be an element of fraud here as well that’s why Audi UK should be told. They might have put a warranty claim through and Audi paid up for new clutch etc but they didn’t fit it so they got the parts and labour for it and didn’t actually do anything.
It’s good having all the evidence of what they claimed to have done.
Good luck. It’s gonna be a battle.

This doesn't surprise me one bit.

Audi is now a joke. Ridiculous prices and 3rd rate "service"

Due to my recent experience with them, I will never own another Audi.

Dealer blames Audi UK. Audi UK blames the dealer. Audi CS worse than useless. As for the exec team/ceo etc, its the same story. No one gives a toss. And I mean NO ONE.

Everything looks good on the website, but the thin veneer soon cracks upon inspection.

I think that the quality has taken a real nosedive, and they’re trading on a perceived image quality which simply isn’t there anymore.

You only have to look at the practice of putting cars with known faults straight back onto the Approved Used Website to understand the way their business model now runs. Its all about the extraction of cash.

My advice to your dad is simple.
Do what I did.
Vote with your feet.
Ditch Audi and move to another brand. If everyone did this Audi would be forced to shape up or go bust!

Very true your whole ordeal with your S3 sounded awful.

Not quite as easy to vote with feet unfortunately, very limited with what dealers will offer finance to a driving instructor (40k miles per year isn't exactly attractive for them haha). But I do believe if this continues he'll end up pushing for it to be returned back to them.

What Audi are doing to your dad is what used to happen in back street garages in the 80's!

Stuff goes wrong. I think we all accept that. Its how issues are dealt with that matter.Lying and cheating from Main Dealers is utterly unacceptable, but goes on a whole lot more than you would believe.

I hope your dad gets this sorted.:icon thumright:

All very shocking from what is supposed to be a `premium` brand.

However, If it were me, and I needed my car to run my business, I'd be kicking up much more of a fuss. Why aren't Audi providing a loan car so your dad can continue running his Business?

If they refuse, then he needs to contact a solicitor and start a claim against either Audi or the dealer for loss of earnings. Plus legal costs, plus compensation.

Yeah we're waiting to see what the head of business says, but completely agree on the loss of earnings.

It's harder to source a loan car as my dad requires dual controls on a car to be fitted for his job. So Audi wouldn't have one, and unlikely they'd get the company in to fit some for a few days.

Going to see what they do and how long they need the car for, either way it'll mean taking the car off road so will definitely consider loss of earnings and possible avenue there.

Thanks for your help and everyone else's comments

when looking on their Audi Approved Used range I am always skeptical when they talk about their exact 149 checks. Its easy enough just ticking 140 or so boxes on a bit of paper but I personally would want a video of a technician doing all said 149 checks. Just so it proves they actually do them. I know getting a video of them doing is abit exaggerated and would be impossible but other than that there's no real way of proving them doing all the checks.

*Rant Over*

But yes its hard to spend all our hard earned money for 3rd rate services at Audi.

This is the reason I will NEVER go back to an Audi main dealer again

Unfortunately the damage wasn't due to the service it was due to warranty work which was unfortunately unavoidable.

Just frustrating the fact they clearly saw the damage when it was in and ignored it, but were happy to send through the Audi cam footage saying the car needed a service and they were happy to do it for £326...

I believe Arnold Clark hire out dual control cars , I would be suggesting that the Audi garage get one for you for as long as required and also state you are happy to go to the papers and facebook twitter etc etc if they do not act quickly .
Also get advice from a solicitor asap and don't wait for the h,o, s who is only interested in making the garage look good .
Good Luck......

Appreciate the advice Pinky. I'll be sure to pass it on to him.

I’m assuming your father has business interruption insurance, he may be better placed raising a claim and providing insurers with the paper trail, they’ll have the resources to push this forward.

Don't think he does, he's only by himself and not a large business. Although I can check.
