Hi guys,

Long time lurker!!!

Finally bought my dream car however the DSG has given up.

Its not selecting any gear , can anyone recommend a good specialist? i am based near west Yorkshire but can always put it on a trailer to get it done properly.

any advice what could be causing this would also be appreciated such as a sensor i could check prior to sending the car in.

thanks in advance :friends:

Congrats .... They are awesome.

@Sandra
should be able to help you in finding someone who can VCDS your car to find the issue ....

DSG issues really are not great... Gear selection issues could be an issue with the mechatronic.

If they diagnose it to be the mechatronic unit, don't buy a new one. Instead, you can get your unit shipped off to ECU Testing and they can repair them in most cases and it will cost a maximum of £250 if I remember correctly.

It will need fluid drained and a bit fiddly, but mechatronic unit can be removed with box in place.

Get it diagnosed first though... Last thing you want to do is waste money by guessing.

Wow thanks for all the replies guys/girls very helpful!!

Maybe i can give more details on the symptoms.

on the screen it shows PRNDS, when changing gear to the corresponding mode (P,R,N,..) it does select it on the screen but nothing happens when you try to accelerate. The screen does not flash either like iv'e seen on some youtube videos. It does sound clunky when moving the selector.

I will make a video tomorrow and some pics to help explain.

Thanks for all the advice/support

Could anyone tell me where i could fine the gearbox code/model number, i dont have the service book and the sticker in the boot is not there.

thanks

Have you serviced the gearbox? Maybe it's too late but an oil and filter may sort it.

Sounds like the mechatronics unit has had it. The gear selection is done hydraulicaly using gear selection solenoids. The solenoids can break or dsg fluid channels can get blocked up due to lack of maintenance or cheap fluid. The other possibility is the electronics got damaged. All this is part of the same unit and can be repaired.

thanks guys,

iv'e booked the car in with http://www.gearboxnottingham.co.uk/ slaters garage - it appears that the mechatronics has had it from the feedback i have had, will keep you all posted, hopefully this can help others as well.

Hi guys just an update looks like the mechatronics unit has had it and was beyond repair.

Will be costing an arm and a leg. Will provide more info shortly.

I'd suggest getting a refurbished unit over brand new ....

Make sure it has a warranty though.

Beyond repair? Sounds like bull to me... Try ECU Testing... Short of it being completely destroyed, they should be able to repair for £250 max.

Good luck with cost. Similar fault on my RS5 cost £2700 at Audi to fix. Could have saved £1k going to a specialist but Audi squeezed car in the next day and had gearbox out, stripped, repaired and back on road in less than 48 hrs including extended test drive with 2 yr warranty on it.

Thanks for the response they are asking £1750.00 (not including VAT), also charged for diagnosis, got a call today saying it wont go into park. I will be standing my ground as it went into park fine before. looks like they have been pulling my leg. not happy at all.

what do you guys think?

thanks for the response. 2 years warranty, i think you did the right thing especially if you were going to hold on to it.

Yeah only bought it January. Thankfully warrantywise covered nearly the full full except for £400 which I had cover as Audi wanted to replace the oil cooler and a wiring loom within the gearbox which were broken but as a preventative measure in the future. I plan on keeping the car a lot of years as we try to put the miles on our A3 instead.

You any further forward getting it fixed?

I have been looking for a while/saving a while, a friend purchased this on my behalf, i knew it needed some work but not to this extent to be honest.

So what all are they repairing?

Seems mighty expensive for just the mechatronics.

But then again if there the best at repairing it, then at least you know it's done right and gonna last.

*****UPDATE*******

okay guys, just had another conversation i have been told i need to replace the whole thing, the mechatronics is not right, the parking poles are broken? im not sure what this is to be honest. I'm not sure whether my leg is being pulled or they cant pinpoint the issue?

new prices quoted is 3.5k plus vat, i told him to leave it, i will be looking for a refurbished gearbox but i have seen threads in regards to a dq500 conversion, can someone point me in the right direction in terms of companies who offer this service, also anywhere i can pick up a gearbox (dq250)? depending on cost i will consider both....

Ebay has some deals on DSG's usually.

Now here's the deal .... I was kinda keeping this secret as I wanted to be the first to do this .... Well likely not .... But .... DQ250 from the Mk7 will bolt right up .... Plus there a heck of a lot more reliable ....
The bolt holes are even the same .... Should be not that hard to match up ....

Plus sides of the newer golf r dsg is I think they have a better differential and mechatronics and clutch's and flywheel .... Overall I think there built better ....

I have compared the side by side photos and they should bolt up perfectly to these cars (TSI gen 1's and FSI EA113's).

Hope this helps ....

You will need the new transmission coded to communicate with the existing ecu and other computers .... If that makes any sense ....

Okay here's a eBay.com link .... If you look at all the years of A3 transmission, with and without quattro, you'll see that the bolt holes line up.

https://www.ebay.com/b/Complete-Auto-Transmissions-for-Audi-A3/171115/bn_1317457

Hope this is helpful in some way .... Basically transmissions from the 8V/Mk7 platform should also fit our cars.

oh wow thanks for the help, I was going to ask something similar as i was told i needed a gearbox with the same code. Could anyone tell me why this needs to match? is this due to the mechatronics and the gearbox it self? i have seen cloning services available, if i were to purchase another gearbox of a different code could it be cloned?

Thanks for your help milty i will have a look on ebay for these new DQ250's what else would need to be done to get everything "singing together" is there anyone you can recommend who could map the new gearbox?

Really you do need a gearbox with the same code for it to work right away, but if you have the time you could swap in a transmission from 8V or Mk7 .... Quattro/4motion

http://www.tvsengineering.nl/en/gearbox/dsg/dq250.html

They should be able to help .... They are very good with DSG software.

*** so still on the hunt to sort this issue out, tvs can swap in a dq500 for 7k that includes a remap and is on a promotional price

Yikes that is a little steep .... Although the DQ500 is awesome and includes features like launch in boost, etc.

Did they say they cant code in the new version of the DQ250?

Hi mate,

and for those who may have similar issues, i am currently in talks with them to weigh up my options. I will keep you all updated :)

*****update****

So i am still waiting to hear back from tvs in relation to fitting a different ratio gearbox, this would have to be tuned as well.

In the mean time i have moved the car from gearboxnottingham aka slaters garage, I personally would not recommend them, no proper diagnosis, probably called then in excess of 8 times to get the codes errors which were coming up and always got palmed off. Number of different quotes given to get the job done. In the end i just felt suspicious and picked up the car. I also noticed some noises from the gearbox which wasn't present when dropped off so not sure what been done. ------- good luck to those who leave their prime and joy with them...

moving on, after endless hours of research i had the car moved to Milta technology in bristol in hopes i can get this problem resolved. They have been mentioned on other audi forums for their great work. I met the GM Piotr, who was friendly and welcoming, the place is also very clean and professional (have a look your self just google them), i also have some pics which i can share). Anyways, Piotr hooked the car up as soon as it arrived i think they use VAS? and was able to run through the issues. Its not looking good but will be starting work on the car on monday where they will be opening up the box. I finally feel like i am making some progress - and hoping the box itself can be repaired.

well i guess i will update once i have some more news.

SOOO the journey continues!!

You guys will probably laugh at this cause i am... think i'm having the worst luck in the world and should have just saved my pennies and bought one without issues. ---- anyways too late for that, unless someone knows of a time machine??

So. Milta have delivered, Pitor the GM contacted today, and advised the driveshaft was bent, and the differential is kapoof, there is also a hole in the gearbox, due to the above.

The good news, the box can be repaired, new housing will be ordered, naturally there will be a delay, and of course the above parts will need to be fitted adding to the cost.

At this point I just want this to end, i have given milta the go ahead.

hopefully i am now out of rocky water...

So far i have only good things to say about milta they have also sent pics over of the damage, i would love to upload them but not sure how. Hopefully it doesn't take too long but so far so good in terms of progress.
