Audi S3 8P3 with the usual mods...

a fresh update, I joined the darkside and switched to an APR tune this week. I haven't picked it up yet but if the whp on 98 ron is as per the APR website it will be a nice increase. 295 nags at the wheels to 370 horse. no doubt the advertised numbers will be high but I'm looking forward to what the butt dyno reckons...

the guys noticed that the uprated pendulum mount was toast and gave me a heads up. in a strange way it was nice to know as I thought I'd heard a knocking lately and guess thats probably it...

so now it has some APR on the car I didn't think it would hurt to go with of their solid pendulum mounts. Surprisingly Ecotune had one in stock...

Swapped out the pendulum mount at the weekend. Hard to tell but the rubber bush on the centre bolt shouldn’t look like that...

Hopefully the new apr one will do a better job...

got some new wheels and rubber for the track also. not my first choice in wheel stye but I was struggling to get the right fitment so they'll have to do...

I tracked the car at Willowbank after the APR tune, loved it and a massive improvement...

the new Nankang AR1 probably helped also...

it was on the clubman circuit and my best time was 105; certainly not great but there would be more in it with driver improvements and tyre pressure changes...

I found time on Friday to replace some service items as I'm trying to dial out some slight rough running issues. I changed the fuel pressure sensor, fuel filter, both oxygen sensors, cleaned the maf and replaced engine oil and filter. the oxygen sensor on the downpipe was loose so I'm thinking that wasn't helping things...

I had lots of fun Saturday on a small kart track, the S3 felt strong but still not 100%. room for a bit more oversteer and the motor back fired and stuttered on a couple of occasions. it still held its only with some relatively track orientated cars though...

44013353385_d0281a2090_b.jpg

I headed out for happy laps early Sunday morning and got half way there when the engine went in to limp mode; I traced this back to a fouled plug. looks like the shop didn't gap my BKR8EIX to 0.55mm which probably explains the rough running. I changed to some 7's that I had as spares and went for a quick spin. the car felt stronger than it did on Saturday; I'll definitely be carrying a spare set of plugs and plug spanner in the car from now on. looking back I don't know why I didn't change them on Friday when I serviced the other parts, gutted I missed hl...

the car is definitely a pretty capable set up and it surprised a few people. i got my pb but decided i could use some tuition, driver modification is next on the list...

also tried a skid pan covered in diesel...

thats when i found out the S3 has ASR that cannot be turned off without pulling the ABS fuse, awesome...

so, if you remove the fuse, you can disable the ASR?

That’s weird man, had a discussion on here before where the pre facelift s3 couldn’t turn it off with the esp button. I don’t think anyone mentioned that it’s never 100% off,

Is there anyone on here who can confirm that with evidence?

MY09 s3 it turns off completely.

Thanks for the replies, mines a facelift MY10 I think...

Can’t turn off asr, removing abs fuse will fix it but obviously no abs then. Apparently pre- facelift could turn off asr. All depends on abs pump module...

Looking at retrofitting an old abs module but doesn’t look like a common method. Spoke to apr dealer and they are aware of the issue but can’t “tune it out”...

Stupid if you ask me, should be a button for it...

Not sure about the pre facelift thing, I’d always thought facelift starts from 09?

agreed, think facelift is 09 onwards. may be to do with year of manufacture of abs pump module. who knows, all I do know is its a pain in the *** and stupid that you can't turn it off...

Yeah that could be right, would make a lot of sense, maybe speak to Audi and see what they say

I did a bit of work over the weekend to prep the car for the btuned sprint series at lakeside on the 8th of feb. first up was the front drop links as they were making an awful racket...

I didn't go with the pillow ball joints this time; they were replaced with some whiteline items that I measured up against my old units. I also stiffened up the rear sway to try and achieve more oversteer...

31808711687_ea41c4bea4_b.jpg

next was to replace the no. 7 spark plugs with no. 8 and closed the gap to 0.022" as per the APR TTE420 tune specification...

39948522453_1cb5cdf72d_b.jpg

the clutch has always felt unusual to me and on doing some reading I thought it may be to do with the hydraulic clutch valve so I decided to remove it. I put a cloth down to catch any dripping fluid...

39948514933_23044da942_b.jpg

this is what it looked like removed from the car...

39948515793_33ccf6fc84_b.jpg

and then this was it with the valve removed...

46936641581_a3aa6a7ec0_b.jpg

then I decided to reduce the pedal travel by replacing the clutch stop; this is the old stop in place...

45998922065_dd0a7451e0_b.jpg

this is both clutch stops compared...

39948519773_04e8d93ae0_b.jpg

then the new one installed...

31972250017_409004151d_b.jpg

finished off by bleeding the clutch and the brake lines; I want to give the M2's a run for their money on the 8th...

I had great fun at lakeside on friday, car definitely felt better and minor improvements from me also. I scored buy best lap time so far but still plenty more time to come off...

46151708055_10d21daa7b_c.jpg

I decided to video my laps this time to see if I could see where I'm going wrong; which is on most of the corners as you can see. that's good though as I know I can bring that time down a great deal further...

YouTube

the car felt down on power on a couple of occasions and it really wasn't happy on the way home even though I always cruise home to give the car and my licence a break. I checked it out and found the boost pipe issue in the photo below. considering my last too laps were my fastest and I'm fairly certain the pipe went on the track, I can hope for improvements alone with significantly more boost next time...

46151708415_df83896317_c.jpg

this is the hose company, I managed to get a replacement sent to my parents in Sheffield and they forwarded it on...

car wasn't running great prior to my track day so I decided I'd try to improve the ignition side and clean the spark plugs. they had only been 500k but I think they fouled due the boost hose leak and the tune trying to correct the mixture. I thought this might happen in the future and didn't want to keep buying new plugs every 500k so decided to try an ultrasonic cleaner...

40884377373_1aa474d45a_c.jpg

I really didn't know what solution to use so experimented with truck wash and water. turned out to be far too much truck wash; I've also heard white vinegar works well...

32907089817_880a1d9bfb_c.jpg

cleaned 8 in one hit, 4 x 7's and 4 x 8's. 8's foul in no time unless you're on the track...

33973770318_c173f7c45d_c.jpg

tips before they went in...

40884376673_de49030b41_c.jpg

this is what they looked like as soon as they hit the cleaner...

40884376973_aee6068932_c.jpg

and this is what the solution looked like after around 12 runs at 40 seconds. stupidly I forgot to take a photo of the end result but I will do that soon to show the comparison...

I also did some other track prep by replacing the rubber...

47061665874_4ddb2515bb_c.jpg

replacing the hpfp fuel bucket...

33973770418_f64e400042_c.jpg

and more work on the ignition side by using the bling r8 coils, super extra horsepower...

40884377313_3be1d914d9_c.jpg

I decided to add a label for when the coils were changed and will do the same for the spark plugs too (I need to change the label, it should be 39K)...

33973770378_623aebcef9_c.jpg

and also replaced the oil...

a few photos I downloaded from the khanacross event, thanks to the photographer and I hope there is no issue with sharing...

that's a very determined grimace face, I was actually enjoying it but it looks like I'm in pain. the magic tree was copping a flogging too...

negative camber really helps, the loaded wheels are nearly square to the tarmac...

lifting a leg on this one...
