very confused about this
my car is a 2004 s4 avant with tiptronic
the engine code is bbk and the gearbox code is 09l

i have asked audi technical if the gearbox oil needs either changing or topping up at any particular service

ive been told it,s a sealed unit and doesnt require the oil changing or topping up at all
but a lot of the american forums talk abut having theres changed

has anyone any experiance of this please or can anybody find out what im being told is definately correct

thanks

I have had my manual s4 for 3 years now and every time i take it for a service i am told that the oil shouldn't need changing (well known specialist)
The RS6 boy's are told that there's doesn't need servicing in the manual but the torque converters fail early if they don't get a regular oil change. That could be due to the fact that theres some much power going through it to shift such a heavy weight that the oil heats up more.
Try calling either MRC or UNIT 20. Both are very helpful

The gearbox is "sealed for life" however the life of the box is much longer IF you change the oil and filter/strainer ! If you wanna be hit with a 5k bill soon, do not change it !

How many miles are on the box? some people say if its fine, leave it alone, as changing the oil can cause problems as you can't drain all the old old and when it mixes with the new oil it doesn't like it. I did an oil change on my S6 as I was having problems with it, didn't help and cost £1860 to get the box rebuilt, still had bother with it and sold the car on.. would out me off a tiptronic again in such a powerful car. maybe speak to a auto box specialist. Not sure if ZF make the box, but they have recommended installers in the UK. remember lifetime oil is just as long at the box lasts.. mine went at 83k.. its like saying engine oil is lifetime... but the lifetime will only be about 20k until it stops working!!!..

some info about the A8 / S6 gearboxes

I think its the ZF 6HP19 gearbox in yours.. so find and speak to a ZF dealer, see what they say. They will say that oil changes are required, preferably at 40k intervals..

car has done just under 50,000 and its running sweet as a nut
no problems at all
just a little concious especially when reading american forums
ive asked my local specialist for a price for it to be done including filters and everything

Shouldn't be that much, I think the oil, filter o-rings etc is about £145 from Audi, make sure they use proper Audi fluid, its about £9 a litre, you need about 10 litres.. they should know how to do it right.. need to check the level with ATF below a certain temp etc..
