Best holiday destination and why?

The " Four Corner States" in the USA (Arizona,Colorado, New Mexico and Utah) for me. We were fortunate to make friends with a couple whilst we we were on a 2 month vacation in a condo in the Dominican Republic. They invited us over and we toured round all the national parks for 3 weeks for free, because they were both retired Park Rangers, who had a lifetime go anywhere car pass. We even managed a helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon.
After the above, I would say Thailand where we have been 6 times. We rented a condo in Hua Hin for 2 months and hired a car and travelled to many tourist places including Bridge on the River Kwai and Hellfire Pass.

Anyone been to Cuba? I booked it last night and then after paying it I totally forgot I went to Vegas in 2012 and my passport has been stamped. Will they let me in or are Cuba ok with the yanks?

Cape Town and environs. Superb, overnight flights, little time difference.

Been on loads of amazing holidays and not sure I could pick out a favourite. Some were:

Floriday Keys
Ischia and Procida off the coast of Naples
Dubrovnik in Croatia
New Orleans

Most disappointing was the furthest one; Australia. Didn't like it. Beer was awful and so was most of the food. The place has no culture...

It’s Dubai for me. Friendly people, warm weather all year round, bath water for the sea and you get a bit of everything; city, beach and good restaurants.

We are on the last day of our Nevada, Arizona and mainly California trip. Loved every minute of it. It’s definitely there with Dubai.

It was awesome is everyway if not a knackering at times - Compared to Route 66 I would say in some ways it was better as there was more to see but you got a better feel of different sides of the US on Route66
I am still going through my pics so I thought I would post them up to the Grand Canyon - We started in San Fransico
I hope you enjoy them

i do now with BA as i normnally travel with BA for all business trips - and we cannot fly business class, gold status takes some flights :)

this year has been crazy with business travel

Some very cool pics.

Ive driven Route 66 aswell in 2016, the water level at the Hoover dam/Lake Mead hasnt been that high in a very long time lol

We're off to the USA again in a few weeks for a long weeknd in Virginia, will be our 25th state visited in the last 6 years.

Currently sat in playa del Carmen, Mexico
Awesome place.

Where you staying, i've just come back (last Wednesday anyway) from the Hard Rock Riveria Maya.

Great resort, great weather and a great golf course (albeit the Hard Rock course is in Playacar).

Enjoy!

I think that's at the side of the golf course is it not? I definitely remember seeing a RIU resort next to the playacar (or hard rock course as it's branded).

Would you recommend?

This is my first week back since the 13th of September... it's been a long one!

Seen a course on the way into the resort, but there are loads of RIU hotels within it so can't be certain.
Only time we left was by taxi for trips and such.
Would I recommend?
Absolutely.
We are planning on going back!

I've just been looking on the TUI site, looks very nice.. price for 3 is reasonable too £4200 (june 2020) for two weeks.

We did the XCARET park

https://www.xcaret.com/en/about-xcaret/

And a few others, the above was the best one as you can swim around the caves / cenotes.

Shopping in Cancun was good as well, La Isla Shopping centre have all the designer shops if you're into that sort of thing.

I'd go back tomorrow.. oh and I'd also recommend the Moon Palace Grand.

Having a little one of 9 with us was not disappointed with the amount of stuff on offer.
We didn't do any of the parks or historical places.
We done the pirate ship, 100% recommend that one, swam with dolphins and done a catamaran cruise to Isla majores.
Went down 5th avenue a few times but got sick of the constant badgering to go into there shops.
Typical tourist heckling.
Our hotel was fantastic, food was top drawer, and met some lovely people.
The Friday night parties they have invite other RIU hotels up so gets pretty lively.
Entertainment in general was very good, and I would go back tomorrow.
10 hour flight or not.

The resorts are brilliant aren’t they and simply do not compare to what we get offered in some EU countries, fair enough the total Holiday costs more however value for money is much better in my opinion. Like you say the service you get is absolutely top class, we tip as I’m sure you will do too, the waiters (I found) don’t make it obvious they are looking for a tip but as they look after you so well, I always felt they earned good tips.. to say the Americans have a massive tipping culture in the US, they seemed to be the tightest.

We went to 5th Avenue and walked around the out door plaza etc and that’s pleasant, you don’t get pestered in there but whilst I was looking to purchase a new watch from the TAG shop, my mrs wandered off with my son and was almost blagged into buying a straw hat for 90 dollars outside of the plaza, we went to the La Isla Shopping Centre after that which is in Cancun itself, although Playa Del Carman is nice, you can tell that Cancun is more geared up for the tourists as it’s more glamorous, that said you still get pestered about excursions outside of the shopping centre etc.

Going back to the badgering, we were walking through the market at the back of the plaza at 5th Avenue, one local shouts over to us ‘where you from amigo’.. replied saying England to which he shouted back ‘cheaper than Aldi amigo, come on in’.. that made me chuckle.

The Mrs wanted to swim with dolphins but wasn’t keen on doing it on her own, our son is 3 so I’d of had to wait with him whilst she did the excursion - it’s in her list though.

Like you say, I would go back to tomorrow too, the ten hour flight doesn’t bother me as we always book to get the premium cabin on the plane so it’s more comfortable etc, this time flew out with Thomas cook on the Tuesday unfortunately they went bust on the Monday so we came back on an A380 (HI FLY) and was lucky enough to be put into the business class seats on the upper deck. There was zero inflight service (out of date sandwich was offered and plastic cup of water). The seats however were far superior to any premium cabin we’ve used on TUI, Thomas Cook or Virgin Atlantic as they reclined almost flat so we were able to have a decent kip on the way back.

On another note my and my mrs are off to Vegas in May next year, have you been? I’ve no idea what to expect as it’s not my usual sort of holiday, it was her choice this time really.

Oh dear I bet you were bricking it out there when you heard the news of Thomas Cook going under, absolute nightmare and glad you got a solution.
Not what you want on your jollies at all.
A lad from my work was due to go to turkey, 28 of them when it folded, I think they managed to rebook elsewhere but not on his requested dates, and not the 28 together.

Regarding tipping, it's a funny culture to get into being a tight Englishman lol, but generally would tip 20pesos every other drink, leave the maid 40 pesos every morning and if I bought something from a shop or trader would generally give between 20-50 pesos, which is funny because I like to haggle, then end up more or less paying the original price once the tip is given lol.

Yeah the whole holiday experience is so more higher class than Europe, even 5 star in Spain/canaries/Cyprus etc, and as you say, they waiters do not ask for a tip, but seeing there face light up with gratitude when you do is great.
They tend to look after you more aswell.

The main gripe I found while walking through 5th avenue other than the heckling was being constantly asked if I wanted Charlie.
Not good, especially when my 9 year old asks me what there asking me.

Re, Vegas, it's not really my cup of tea mate, I have zero interest in gambling, and basically that's the whole point in going I presume.
I know people who love it, and I am already married so don't require Elvis to renew my vows just yet lol!
Obviously there will be lots and lots of stuff to do but nah, not for me.
Mexico again for us

Mexico again for us

The Thomas cook thing really didn’t affect us in resort, our private taxi transfers were still valid, the hotel was paid for up front and our excursions were still valid too.. nobody said anything to us demanding money at all, this was my honeymoon so I collared the rep as soon as we heard and he explained that our trip was all paid for and there was nothing to worry about.

If I’d if needed to pay more money I would have done and claimed the original holiday cost back via our insurance, I couldn’t have been bothered arguing 5 days into a 14 day holiday.

We had a five hour delay on the return flight and that was it but to be fair a delay could have happened to Thomas Cook if they were still trading so I could get past that.

The Charlie thing isn’t good is it, especially knowing you were with your lad, what do these people think you’re gonna do? By a bag in public whilst in the company of your son? Morons aren’t they..

I’m not a massive gambler myself, in fact I’m terrible at it so i won’t be spending thousands in casinos in Vegas.

I’ve looked at the trips and things which you can and they look pretty good so we’ll see.

To my mind, it’s a do it once sort of trip and move on. It will just be me and my mrs with my lad being at his grandmas for the week so we’ll be able to have a couple of decent nights out and generally be able to relax a bit more being child free, i suppose you could say it’s an extended honeymoon.

If it was my choice though, I’d be back to Mexico with the golf clubs in a swanky resort but I’m told there’s a saying called ‘happy wife, happy life’ haha.
