Bonnet Release cable/latch sticky

My bonnet release cable/latch is getting sticky lately. It takes a fair pull to get the bonnet to release and it often doesn't "pop" open. You have to go and pull the actual bonnet to get it to pop open and stick out the little leaver to open it fully. Also the release on the interior doesn't pull itself back so when you try to slam the bonnet, it doesn't fully latch. You have to push the interior release back manually and then close the hood. Unfortunately, I can't get one in time by online delivery, so is there anything I can do to get it to temporarily free out to pass its NCT (MOT) this weekend? I'm not sure if its the cable itself or the latch that the bonnet clips into is the cause. I've tried drowning the latch in WD40 for good measure, but thats not working.
