Can DOT 5.1 be used like DOT 4 LV for ABS/ESP systems ?

Hi friends,

I was looking for a DOT 4 LV bottle which is sometime a bit harder to find than 5.1 when you need it immediately. I wonder if on cold climate it could be an issue.

DOT 4 class 4 Viscosity (-40°C) ≤ 1800 cSt

DOT 4 LV class 6 Viscosity (-40°C) ≤ 750 cSt

DOT 5.1 class 5.1 Viscosity (-40°C) ≤ 900 cSt

What do you think ? Dot 5.1 is already so much better than DOT 4 standard and nearly the same viscosity. It has also high boiling temperature point like Super DOT 4.

Another question for experts : If you use a DOT 4 LV fluid on older cars, it could be beneficial for faster brake piston retraction, and sticky slow clutch slave cylinder. But does this induce problems and possible leakage, loss of lubrication at very high temperatures in racing situations ?

I also seen many times that some racing fluid acts with special lubrication properties with extreme temperatures but are sadly not of low viscosity. But what is this benefit, when your clutch return valve doesn't let heavy fluid flow back...

Good day to you !
