Rught guys yesterday on my way to work aftwr around 2 miles my car started to missfire and sound very lumpy, i crawled to a lay by 500yards up the road and popped the bonnet, i had a look around and couldnt see any visible leaks or damage, the air intake pipe was slightly a jar, i connected it back up and all seemed well and good again. Drove home from work with no problems!! Gone to start for work this morning and it wont fire, i can hear the engine turning butit just wont fire into life!!?? Any ideas or best routes of enquires to what it is!!??

Thanks mike, is that an expensive job?? Got my mate whos a mechanic is coming to have a quick look at it tonight before making a plan of action!!

Could be quite a few things. Reading the fault codes would probably point you in the right direction. Sounds fuel related to me from what you have said. although could be an intermittent electrical issue.

sorry to say but it could be anything getting the fault codes read would be your first thing to do if its not starting or running rough there will be a fault code there, post back with what your mechanic mate finds

Thanks for the input guys, mechanic hasnt shown up as hes stacked out at work and still at his garage!! Will keep you updated

A pop and smoke don't sound good it's prop back fired with un burnt fuel which split the in take pipe. If it's not starting there should be another code there as to why. Did they try delete the present codes? Did they come back on?

I'm sure if you started your own thread a lot more people would see it

Quick update, Ro55 has just been round with VAG.COM equitment and that brought nothing up that would stop the car running. He noticed my fuel gauge was on empty, we listened for fuel through tank and couldnt hear any, now i had 1/4 of a tank on monday evening 100%, so we checked the lock on the filler cap and it isnt locking so im thinking its been sythened overnight!! Going to get fuel in an hour or so so will update you!!

Going back and reading your first post could be no fuel related mate

Right ok....... my stupidness is continuing!!! Just put fuel in and tried again to no sucess, then realised than we were looking at the temp gauge earlier and i have actually still got nearly half a tank of fuel, not doing myself any favours here am I........ jumping the battery may be my next port of call then its probably looking at compression tests!?!?

All faults cleared.Dan fuel showed low,but your on a bank remember...it turned over very freely.get some jump leads and cold start.Get some coolant too, just looks like water in there...i wish i had come more equipped. Only just got in. keep me posted,or if you need owt just say.

well there is nothing there to show anything major, put some life in the battery and go from there

I got a gut feeling its the pump,if no joy with battery and cold start.ill pop back and test it mate....you could stick your ear on the back seat while someone turns the key.pump should be drivers side.

pop up the back seats and give the pump a bit of a wack see if it might give it a kick

Only just got in at 10.20, must of been some sort of traffic on your way home!! Thanks for coming round tho i appreciate it!! A lad at work used to be a mechanic at ford in aber so hoping hes going to pop back and look at it to check its sparking and fuel is getting to the engine, and also trying to get my hands on some jump leads today to try it!!

Thanks for the advice Dan i appreciate the help, its all leading me down the road to fixing it hopefully, the more i try the less iv got to pay the mechanics

Update..... my work mate (ex mechanic) has been round, the engine is getting a spark but no fuel. We took the fuel pipe apart at the high pressure nut/bolt thingy majig and whike turning over there was no fuel spurting out. So we found the fuel pump which was in the boot and took the feed pipe of and turned the car over, fuel was spurting out around 5cm out of the top of the pump. So pump is working but not getting fuel at the engine, after a good few turn overs there was no sign of fuel dripping from the bottom of the car so no leak in the line. Looks like iv either got a blockage in the fuel line or there isnt enough pressure coming out of the fuel pump as he said it should really be hitting the top of the boot (saloon). Any more insight from you guys as to fuel pressure or pump being knackered??

Sound like the fuel pump is very tired as there should be quite a bit of pressure.

Yeah thats what im thinking. Is replacing the fuel pump a big job, ie does the tank need dropping or is it a job that can be done from inside the boot?? Can anybody provide a part number for the fuel pump, iv looked in the part numbers section and cant find it and have also searched online!?

I'd go for a new fuel pump and replace the fuel filter like your mate said the pressure coming out of that pump should go everywhere and hit the roof of the boot sounds like a partially seized fuel pump

Yeah thats my plan, is it a job that someone who knows what they are doing can do on my drive??

Yer I don't see why not where is the fuel pump exactly

In the boot, just behind the spare wheel compartment under a metal plate thats like the ones under the rear bench. Its pretty awkward to work in but its accessable, and the fuel feeds are on the top of the pump so cant really see why it couldnt be changed on the spot........

Yeh it might be a bit tricky but someone with some patience could do it I'm sure mate

Im hoping so, saves paying a recovery team a fee to transport it to a garage. Thanks Dan. Ill keep you all updated on any progress but i doubt there will be until next week!!

haha i know i work for one of them recovery teams if you close by and need help i can bring my truck out to you

Thanks for the offer, but after looking at your profile your from bedford which is around 2hours away from me, but appreciate it thanks!!

Hey,left you and went to stafford lol.
Ive never done one before matey, your probably best getting it to your mate and tell him what you have found.i know some pumps can be split and cleaned, there is a metal gauze in them that clogs. It might be that or whole new unit needed,pm me your reg and i might be able to get you a genuine unit cheap. also pop your reg in euro car parts.

Get the fuel filter done 1st,it may be clogged slowing the fuel supply to engine....i wouldnt be suprised if its that.

Right update.....
Finally got my mechanic round after a week of waiting, 3minutes later the car is running!!! The pump had ceased its self and by switching the power points he made it go backwards which un ceased it then she fired 1st turn of the key!! Leaving it to run for a while now to lube itself back up and put some special stuff hes bringing me back later to further help the lubrication of the pump!! We all love a bit of lube!! Happy with that outcome after looking at the prices of new pumps, £200 +vat was the best price i could find!!

Yeah that was my original thoughts when mechanic said it should lube itself up again. Hopefully hes coming to change it over tomorrow so should be good then!
