RS 3 has done 47000 km and the front pads need to be changed.
What is the minimum thickness of the (wave) discs?
I don’t want to change the pads and after a few thousant km need to change the discs.
Because i think you have to change the pads also when you got new discs.

Thx for info .. 32,4 mm min.
I ‘ll check the discs and make a decision changing pads or changing pads and discs at once

Is it correct that the ‘dimples’ in the disc can also be used as a wear marker? When these are worn smooth the discs need changing?

When my independent tried to measure them, the calliper and disc backing plate was stopping them.

If your independent ‘specialist’ can’t measure the thickness because the shield is in the way then I’d be concerned to be honest.
They are not difficult to measure providing you have the correct equipment to to it with.

They put one of the apprentices on it for the oil service, he said he couldn’t do it because there was no way to get the micrometer around.

When I mentioned it to Audi they said they will do it when it goes in for the inspection service in the next couple thousand miles.

Hi Matthew; you can/could easily measure disc thickness with, for example, a 150mm plastic vernier gauge like so:

Disc measure 1 Disc measure 2

I was giving BLUEY (8P RS3) a wee under-the-wheel-arches clean today so I thought I'd demonstrate - with the dirt shield in place - for you...

As for the 150mm plastic vernier gauge see eBay item number: 272013822191 @£4.34 FREE post

Worth buying TWO (I did/have) at that price...

PS: your question "Is it correct that the ‘dimples’ in the disc can also be used as a wear marker? When these are worn smooth the discs need changing?" erm, no... :readit:

Hi John :D

Thanks for that, I do have a digital vernier gauge but figured that wouldn’t work as there is a lip on the disc? Albeit slight, so I ordered a micrometer and just haven’t gotten around to checking myself. Wheels have been off, just not thought of it or dug the right kit out at the time.

Hence when the independent performed a ‘Health Check’, I figured I would ask.. so they tried to get a micrometer around the disc and told me they couldn’t. Well, the apprentice who was working on my car.. the wheel was on making things trickier.

I’m sure somebody told me on here that the dimples could be used as wear markers some time ago, so I asked the ‘technical advisor’ at Audi and he confirmed yes that was correct?
