Coolant leaking

It is not that difficult a job the worst part is getting the manifold untangled from the spaghetti of wires and pipes. Mine was only leaking initially when under pressure which makes sense now as that's when the valve would be opening. Good luck . If I can help you in any way just message me

Thanks mate, I'll probably take a punt and order up the valve and seals before going for it. The garage I was going to take it to had mentioned "a plastic valve" that had cracked on previous cars.

Hi All,
Wanted to share a similar issue with my 2013 A6 3.0 BiTDi because it took me months to resolve this annoying issue.

Had a very slow coolant loss which was visible on the front sump below the water pump. Changed the water pump, no joy. Installed the pump again, still no joy. Changed the o-ring on the water pump, still no joy.....read the above stories, decided to strip the upper block. As per the following photos, the V-block was flooded, which also dripped down the front of the engine onto the sump.

Replaced the coolant regulating value (059 121 737) shown in position 1 as it was evident coolant was leaking on the shaft seal.

Replaced the intermediate flange (059 121 506g) shown in position 2, as there was a small tear in the seal.

Given the fact this was the first time i've stripped my BiTDi engine, the entire job took about 8hrs....the hardness thing was stripping and installing the inlet manifold as it a bit of a pig.

Hope these photos gives other 3.0 owners resolution to this common fault.

Did you have to drain coolant when replacing those? Repair manual says to drain coolant when removing oil cooler, which in your case you were not removing.

So iv had the car around 7 months now and I've noticed after i had a warning for low coolant. Checked the bottle and it was empty. Admittedly I didn't check it when I bought the car but I wouldn't of noticed as the bottle is stained.

I topped it back up above the min mark and iv looked again and it's now below the minimum mark. Problem is I can't see any signs of a leak..

Is there any common areas that these leak? Known faults?

It's a 2012 A6 3.0tdi quattro 245ps.

Thanks Craig.

Hi
I have same problem
Its a EGR issue most likely
The problem with this is is that it requires lots of work to open up and see exactly where but i give you some examples
The easy one is main gaskets can be liking since is probably old and need ro be changed
See in my pic
Also can be this little plastik that goes to the egr as in example in pic
Sorry for my broken English
That i did instead of buying new one i fix the old one with a piece of metal i install
The reason i fix it in my one is not that this part is expensive actually is cheap but not strong it will break again

Hi, reference my blog below, coolant regulator is a common fault. Impossible to see as the leak is deep in the vee. Reference my photos below. Hope it helps.

So my new A6 3.0tdi has a water leak, it empty’s the expansion tank over a few days. Took it to a garage and they think it’s the head gasket as they added block test fluid and it’s detected exhaust gases in the coolant which it did! Any chance this could be the EGR cooler and not the head gasket? Also found that the oil cooler is leaking aswell. I’m still in the 30day window so should I get a refund or let them repair it?

Hi

Does anyone have any more pictures how to remove the intake manifold?

When driving and taking a stand still, there is burning smell coming in the cabin. Bought a endoscope and tried to look in the V, seems like a puddle ise there and seems like something may drip to the exhaust and make that smell.

Thank you so much! This helps a lot. I'm having a similar problem where the expansion tank needs to be refilled once every 2k miles, no leaks at the water pump. So I ordered the same 2 parts you replaced, and I'm starting to disassemble the top of the engine now. Can't see inside the V so I don't know if there's coolant there for sure, but I can smell it if I go real close to the manifold.

I completed disassembly and found the same part leaking as buckle and danny0005. I am pre-emptively replacing literally every single gasket and hose in there so I don't have to open it up again. Here's a list of all the remaining part numbers (apart from the 2 that buckle listed) you'll need if you decide to go my route.
EGR seals:
059131120B
WHT002287B
059131599G
059131547R
059131358B

Coolant seals and hoses:
059121149E
059121625D
059121149B
059121073P

These are all pretty cheap, cost me around $50 for the 8 parts. Plus $100 for the 2 parts buckle mentioned.

Added 2 more gaskets to the list of parts I'm replacing. These go under the oil cooler, part numbers are 059117070 and 059117070A

Another update on this, I put everything back together and found coolant leaking, but also some oil with it. Pulled everything apart again (only took me 1 hour to disassemble the second time) to find the oil cooler leaking. The problem was that the oil cooler is 2 parts- one is like a brick up top, and it's attached to a metal plate that screws into the engine block. Look at pictures of part number 059117015P to help understand.

I detached the brick on top for disassembly, and unfortunately I can't find a part number for the gasket that goes between the top and bottom parts of the oil cooler. Maybe Audi doesn't sell that, because both parts come as a unit for purchase and are probably not meant to be separated. So long story short, when you pull out the oil cooler, do NOT remove the screws holding the brick to the plate. Instead, remove the screws that are lower down so you can pull the entire oil cooler in one piece, like in this picture.

To reiterate, just do NOT pull the oil cooler out like this or you'll be replacing the whole cooler like me ($300 online, $450 at dealer)
