im relatively new to diesels and what ive noticed it when its doing a dpf regen and the rpm idles at 1000, when i accelerate medium/hard i get quite a lot of smoke on the initial pull, then it dies down until the dpf has stopped doing its regen, from what i can see its sort of a grey colour, is this normal?

No, it's not normal, none of my diesels eith DPF have done that. I'm guessing that You have oil in Your exhaust (and at DPF) which is burned during DPF regen. Could be leaking turbo seals.
