Facelift Direct TPMS Question

I'm thinking of fitting direct TPMS as opposed to the one that uses the wheel speed sensors.

Question is, can you rotate your wheels with the direct system fitted? Or does it know which wheel is where and they can only go back on that corner?

Yes you can rotate, your wheels. All you have to do is ask the car to relearn the pressures and it will put them in the right place. It will also deal with 2 sets of tyres, I have both a winter and summer set and never had a problem when I swap them. Speak to @DJAlix he helped me code mine and source the correct module so you get both pressure and temperature. I have also had no issues with the valves I sourced from AliExpress, I have had them fitted about 2 years

Cheers mate! Also, where did you get power from for the TPMS module? Did you use a fuse tap?

I bought a loom again from AliExpress, which was good quality. It took power all the way to the main fuse box. I actually bought a spare fuse box from eBay and removed the pins and added the correct pin and fuses to my box so it was like factory.

The module is supposed to be located behind the rear bumper, with a bracket similar to the keyless entry receiver, but I was lazy because I don’t want to remove the bumper and mine lives in the rear right boot cubby where the electrical module Center is.

Search for my name and TPMS and there is a bunch of info. I posted this link as reference at one point too

Like jrumball, I was able to order the HW kit from Aliexpress and install it on my 2017 S3 this weekend. My only issue is my virtual cockpit is throwing a hard code for the module being incorrectly coded. Does everyone else have this code or is there another coding change I am missing with VC? To summarize, here are my coding changes in 17:

Byte 3 - Bit 7 Active
Byte 4 - Bit 0 Inactive.
Byte 11 - Bit 2 Active.

Fault is in 17 - cluster. No other faults present, TPMS system operates without issue.

Have you tried entering that module individually and clearing the fault instead of from the full scan? Did you check for faults prior to the retrofit ?

Yes, attempted manual fault clearing after the auto scan would not delete it. Fault just comes back (no lights or warning messages though). And yes, can verify fault was not present prior to doing the retrofit:

changes in 03 (8v0 module variant):
Byte 27 - D4 to F4 (bit 4, 5 and 6 on for direct TPMS)
Byte 28 - 82 to 02 (bit 7 off)

changes in 17:
Byte 3 - Bit 7 Active
Byte 4 - Bit 0 Inactive.
Byte 11 - Bit 2 Active.

Sometimes "errors" or "advisory" messages like this are unavoidable. You will need to complete further investigation in order to see if it can be cleared but welcome to my world, a world which is not always error free and you need to remember that you are trying to add something to the vehicle that its not supposed to be equipped with.

That being said, have you seen this fault show up in modules related to other module coding? For example, would 17 store this fault if 03 is coded differently and they conflict each other's configurations? Thus 17 saying it is incorrectly coded?

The instructions had me coding 03 Byte 27 - bits 4,5,6 to all un-checked for no TPMS installed. I found a Ross Tech thread for the 8V0 variant ABS modules and it confirmed that Byte 27 can be coded as "direct TPMS installed" by having bits 4,5 and 6 all checked. That is what I did. I wonder if I try coding ABS to no TPMS that it may eliminate the coding fault in 17?

I misread your byte 27 from your previous post where you had the bits on. This is the way cars are configured from factory with TPMS.

Changed the bits in Byte 27 to 4,5,6 off (unchecked). Stored coding. Fault now erases from 17 and does not come back. Thank you Alix for the support. I will edit my instructions so others do not fall into the same hole. Cheers.
