This is a long shot, what with it being so late (in the UK, anyway)...

I managed to lose a key this evening. It’s one of two for my 2017 Audi S3. I’m at home now with the car and have my spare key with me.

Can anybody help me with a way to ‘disable’ the car? If my lost key is found by some unscrupulous person, how do I prevent them from stealing it?

Despite being only metres away from my car I am unable to sleep! Any quick responses will be much appreciated!

I guess the stolen key could be deactivated but imagine it would need to be done by Audi or a specialist?

Unless you lost it right next to the car or there aren't many Audis around, I would hope it would be fine though !

Would disconnecting the battery prevent it being opened using the key fob remote?

Or, sleep in the car :D

Disconnect battery will stop it flashing/unlocking when someone dodgy is walking down the street and looking for a flash while pressing the button.
Audi/specialist can remove key from the system so it shouldn’t start the car or unlock it after it’s removed.
Only problem is the physical metal key inside the fob will still work on the lock barrels. If you are that paranoid, which it sounds like you are, I would get the lot, barrels and keys changed. Not cheap getting the lot replaced.

Thanks all for your help. I disconnected the battery in the end.

Tomorrow I’ll be off to the Audi dealer to get a new key and have that and the one I do have reprogrammed. It’ll mean that if someone tried to use the key then they’d be able to get in and start it, but the engine would cut out after 10 seconds.

Having all the locks replaced is an option, but a very expensive one! I’m curious to know how much they’d want for that so will be asking.

For now, the car’s going to be locked away!

Genuine key is gonna take approx 10 working days to order up. Place the order and ask them to remove the missing key, then when the other arrives they can code it in.

Good idea, thank you!

Many insurance companies cover lost keys, and the cost of getting new locks etc. It’s cheaper for them than replacing the entire car I guess....

In case anyone is interested - £260 for one new key and recoding. £753 for two new keys and new locks on the car.

I kinda knew the keys were around the £250-300 mark. £753 for new keys and locks actually isn’t that bad considering it was only a few years ago I paid £350 for the dimming glass mirror(just the glass not housing) on my a6.
I’m assuming £753 is for 1 new key with fob, reuse existing fob and new key and 2 barrels, door and ignitions, with labour and coding inclusive?

Pretty much, except it’s two keys. It comes as a package apparently

First time I actually think Audi prices pretty reasonable. At least in my eyes.
keys/fobs x2 £500
Barrels x2 I would guess at £100 -150
That leaves around £100 for labour/coding which at dealer prices is 1 hour @ £100+ per hour. Probably use that on labour alone for fitting barrels.
Would have expected a grand or more.
