My 2002 A4 Avant has the badges on the speaker grilles. But my stereo doesn't say BOSE when it comes on and I cant see any marking on the amp in the boot - should there be?

I don't recall my stereo saying Bose. If you want to be sure there should be a sticker in your spare wheel well or booklets which has all the option codes listed, decode them using one of the tools on here and see if Bose comes up.
I will do that mate cheers. I don't think i do however, as when installing aftermarket stereo there was nothing connected to the BOSE port on the headunit!
