A thread for film fans really. Despite the fact that you can literally download anything from Disney cartoons to hardcore pron these days, there are some things you must have that are original.
Which DVD(s) should be in your private collection, and why?

Being an Audi forum, Ronin is one that that comes to mind, everytime it's on TV, we all like to give a reminder, especially a mention of the carchase which introduces the Audi S8 as the star of the show.

American Beauty - best film of recent times, and you can watch it again & again, just brilliant concept, brilliant dialogue, oh and Mena Suvari getting her adolescent kit off of course.
Fight Club - just outstanding in every way
Betty Blue - the only sub titled film I would recommend, Beatrice Dalle is quality even when she pokes her own eye out.

Airplane
The Hunt for Red October

Schindlers List? Yes that's one you just have to watch again & again!
Powerful film, but you only really ever want to see it once, preferably back in 1993 at the cinema.

Fair comment but that film should be shown again so that people do not forget what happened. Like wise with shooting dogs.

Also JoJo asked
Which DVD(s) should be in your private collection, and why?
so my answer above is why they should be in peoples collections

oh!
Event Horizon
Hellraiser
Debbie does Dallas

Being an avid DVD collector (I own 1400 DVD's) I thought I'd post my must haves' by genre.

Action
The Hitcher - A superb remake of a movie classic.

Adventure

Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers
This is a great follow up to the first movie. The build up to the big battle scene is phenomenal the tension is amazing a must see but watch the fellowship of the ring first which is also great.

Animation
Wallace And Gromit - The Curse Of The Were Rabbit
The last film from Ardman Animation and a real beauty.

Biography
The Queen 2006
Helen Mirren at her very best.

Comedy
Freddy Got Fingered.
Astonishingly tasteless comedy. Watch out for the birth scene.
51ZWPYK0NAL._AA240_.jpg

Crime
True Romance
Very violent but totally absorbing.
519VXEBMQVL._AA240_.jpg

Green Street
Fantastic performances from Elijah Wood and Charlie Hunnam. The energy of the film is great.Wicked soundtrack, great script and an overall very cool film.
511R3AC2C8L._AA240_.jpg

Family
Charlie & The Chocolate Factory
Johnny Depp is good at turning his hand to anything he applies himself to. He makes a wacky, fun Willy Wonka.
61FK3JYMBFL._AA240_.jpg

Fantasy
Premonition
Storyline is a clever idea and there are some genuinely spooky moments in this film. It is also quite moving.
51DeLZDEs1L._AA240_.jpg

Horror
Hostel
Classic Quentin Tarantino. Don't bother with Hostel II though.
510AP2627BL._AA240_.jpg

Mystery
Identity
Very underrated film. Complicated and diverse plot but totally engaging.
510Q60XAYVL._AA240_.jpg

An old one but a good one. A warm and compelling love story.

Now I know a lot of people will disagree with the above choices. I have steered clear of the obvious normal choices and listed a few of my favorite films. I've deliberately chosen some obscure titles and I'm not saying that everyone should have these in their collection but ,if your renting a DVD and stuck for chose, then it might help you make a decision and pick something you might otherwise overlook.

Going off Big Time
I.D
Once were Warriors
New Jack City
Boyz in the Hood
White Men Can't Jump
Crash
Thomas Crown Affair
Star Wars
The Crow
Wolf Creek

Indiana Jones
Last of the Mohicans
The Patriot
Gladiator
Braveheart
Terminator 1 & 2
Finding Nemo
Toy Story
ET
City of God

...just a few favourites

Memento is a good one to have on DVD so you can watch it through, get confused then watch the special feature that re-orders the scenes so it all makes sense. Great film.

Well I'm not going to re-post a load listed above, as I can see a lot of my collection above.

My fav all time film is Apollo 13 just love that film, could be as I have the book Lost Moon on which it is based.

A recent addition that I would recomend is The Wire. HBO American gritty drug cop series. Just watched Series 1 (Christmas pressent from Kate the Mrs) and I'm now looking for two and three box sets.
