Fuel gauge working intermitent

Morning all, fairly familiar with the audi range and have an A6 3.0TDi with fuel gauge problems, it seems to not work more often than work!
recalling the fault codes it comes with the the sensor short to ground, i have got the rear seat up and had a look at the electrical plug onto the pump/sender and they seem clean and to the eye look good, has anyone had a similar fault? am i looking at a new sensor in the tank?

Common problem, sender unit in the tank.

Do a search on google and you'll see plenty of threads.

I have same car and have changed the sender in the tank, be careful putting seat pad down as I snapped off the clip that holds it down.
