What's your thoughts on Gravity exhausts? There's a set of resonator delete downpipes for less than one OEM pipe. I'm worried that the lack of resonator will make it sound raspy, which I don't particularly like. LINK It says for manual cars only, which I don't really understand why it wouldn't be suitable for the DSG. Is it the lack of resonators or something?

Did you have your Scorpion resonated downpipes on with the rest of the exhaust being stock? If so, how did it sound? Cheers.
I'd never heard of Gravity exhausts before, but i just took a look at their stuff and it looks pretty good (all T304 stainless, decent tig welds, mandrel bends etc)..

TBH I started on my exhaust journey because the flexis failed on my OEM downpipes and dropped crap into the baby resonators and they then started to rattle.. which is why i replaced them with resonated 2.5" Scorpion downpipes (which were also cheaper than the OEM 2.25" Audi exhaust). This setup pretty much sounded stock.

I then had the stock cats gutted and re-fitted... this is what gives you rasp, trust me! Any de cat (gutting or test pipes) makes these V6s raspy.

I then got the rest of the resonated Scorpion system.. so now all 2.5" from the cat back, and the marginally increased bore seemed weirdly to tame the rasp down a smidge. Any larger diameter exhaust tho does bring with it, drone. And this to me, is worse than rasp.

At 70-75 in 7th under load/mild accell, its pretty bad.. i wont say unbearable, but remember i still have all resonators in place!! The guys who have catless, non res systems must not ever go on motorways, or drop to 5th gear and rev the t1ts off it to avoid the drone band.

Sorry for the waffle... in summary, do i think non-res downpipes will make your car raspy? No. I think it will drone. :)

Cheers

Cheers for the reply. Your comments on the downpipes appears to be exactly what's happened to me. When I bang the n/s downpipe I can hear rattling from inside the resonator. I believe this is also the noise I'm hearing when the revs drops down through 1,100 rpm.

OEM downpipes I was quoted £375 each, although LLL parts are doing them for about £305 each. But still far more expensive than Scorpion pair. Good to hear it won't cause rasp, I don't like that and prefer the deep sounding exhausts. Been looking up a lot about full exhaust systems and drone seems to be a real issue with the B8. Apparently the OEM rear silences have some extra bit in them, Helmholtz or something that stops the drone?

My insurance renews in June, so I'll get away from Churchill (refuse to insure for any mods) and go with a mod friendly insurer and get the Scorpions.

Mechanic at work bought the CAT back Gravity exhaust for his 208 GTi and it's a nice bit of kit. The resonators and silencers all appeared to be rather unrestricted and after fitting on Friday the result was a very lovely deep exhaust note. ****** loud when you floor it.

Thanks. I did call up Chris Knott and went through a quote and they came back at a grand, which seems insane considering my current premium is almost half that. They then said if I tried Compare the Market and popped in the exhaust mod and got quotes back that were cheaper then they could match and further reduce by 10%. I'm not sure how I feel about that, because it comes across as "we will try to rip you off first" type attitude.

Try Sterling Insurance they're great with modded cars

I haven't used Chris Knott for years - I think they wanted to get out of the mods market.
Some mainstream insurers will cover mods but I find there are always caveats.
I recommend going to a specialist broker. I currently get Safely Insured (was Sky) and A-Plan competing. The owner of A-Plan now has their own underwriter so they can be competitive, however this year Safely Insured decided that they would lower their quote to keep me.
What risk are you? I'm an old git and keep my car in a garage in a nice area so maybe I'm less of a risk than you.

I am with AIB Insurance and have been with them for the last 6 years without any issues. This year, Safely Insured and A-Plan came up with exactly the same quote as AIB hence why I decided to stay put. The quote stayed the same for me regardless of if I was keeping the car in the garage or on the driveway.

Chris Knotts and Adrian Flux have never worked for me. They have always been extremely expensive (almost 3 times) compared to £389 that I am paying AIB.

Been driving since I was 17, I'm now mid forties. Clean licence for a long time, no claims against me. Three small non-fault claims a few years ago. About to hit 3 years no claims discount because they won't recognise lengthy past no-claims from being on the fleet insurance (yet they will recognise the non-fault claims - funny that). Dashcam hardwired but car is kept on street, also in nice area in Glasgow... bit of an oxymoron that though haha!

I'll shop around and see what comes back, but I'm definitely getting the Scorpion downpipes so Churchill can say bye bye not only to my car insurance but also my home insurance when it renews. They want £50 to leave early, but the car insurance expires in June so I'll just wait until then.

When you say AIB, is that Allied Irish Bank car insurance or Airsports Insurance Bureau? Thanks.

Airports Insurance Bureau - 023 8026 8351. Their underwriters are Markerstudy, who also happen to be the underwriters for majority of the insurance companies for modded cars.

I think big cities command higher premiums. My daughter moved from North Wales to Liverpool and her premium doubled. And she parks in a secured area of her group of flats.
But the low NCD could be responsible too.
I hadn't heard of AIB. I've had policies underwritten by Markerstudy in the past. Maybe I'll try AIB next year.
I always hate it when I go to the effort of getting a comparative quote and it's the same as my renewal so of course I stay put too. So I was very glad that this year A-Plan undercut Safely Insured by enough to go back to Safely Insured who agreed to an even lower premium. I think it's the first time that a broker has genuinely made an effort to keep me as a customer.

Did a cheeky track day at Anglesey on Bank Holiday Monday.. amazing day, very well organized (Circuit Days), and stunning track and views. Single only downside is its the most brutal track on tyres I've ever done!!

How did she get on?

She didn't skip a beat all day.. right up to the point the tyres started to destroy themselves. The tyre pressures got high (even tho i kept adjusting them), the tread blocks melted and rolled over on themselves, causing cornering vibrations so loud i thought the wheel bearings had gone lol!

I will say, this event wasn't for the faint-hearted.. i was probably the slowest car there, and i don't hang around!!

Most folks turned up with proper track prepped race cars on trailers, or if they did drive them there, they promptly stripped them track-side and had different wheels with semi slick tyres to put on... some even had mechanics and crews with them - it was pretty intimidating considering my car is my work daily/dog car, and i had used it the day before to do a tip run haha.

Anyways, i didnt embarrass myself.. and more folks came to talk to me about my car (mostly due to the SC whine), than my 2x mates in their E92 M3 or Ferrari 360 - much to their annoyance.

On to the next track... eyeing up Cadwell and Croft to tick off the list.

Cheers

HEAT SOAK - THE STRUGGLE IS REAL!

So about a month ago i booked my car for 3x dyno power runs at a place close to my one of my work offices in Warrington for 2pm one Tuesday arvo.

After a thrash to Warrington in 28c heat, the ol boat was a bit warm, but i got there early and figured I'd pop the bonnet and let it cool.. nope! The dyno was free so they strapped it straight on, with the bonnet closed and only one fan blowing into the HX.. and did the runs.

A very disappointing 441bhp at the crank.

Fast forward 3 weeks later, and for various reasons i find myself in Banbury (home of MRC - who's stg2 map i have on my car)... and they strap my car on their dyno at 0830 in the morning, a cool 15c, bonnet open, 2x fans blowing...

A much more respectable 488bhp at the crank.

This is around where i expected it to be being stg2, catless, HX, intake, and exhaust.

Now i know there's a gazillion variables.. temps / dynos / fuel etc... But the fact remains.. 3.0T's suffer BADLY with heat soak, and now i have the dyno graphs to prove it.

goose

The real question is in the normal day to day UK temps is the problem the same, or is it just exceptional heat that makes it suffer?

Not much to report the last few months.. did finally get round to having the Maxton front lip put on, some new rear pads, and sorting the front pad wear sensor, so i no longer have an annoying fault (caused by the DS2500s not having wear sensors).

Altho, the splitter will be coming off and on again as the garage i used did a shocking job, and my OCD is triggered big time!

Also am over to Awesome tomorrow for new PCV, water pump, and thermostat.

Next up.. tyres (and maybe wheels!!), ready for a re-visit to Oulton Park next month.

What pads did you go for?

Just had my pcv replaced, no doubt the water pump and thermostat will need doing next

Rears? just the boggo ones (Pagid or Brembo I think - I cant remember)... the rears don't really do that much.

I have VBT J-Hook disks and HEL braided lines on the rear too.. but only really for cosmetic reasons so they match the front lol

Sat at Awesome getting the above done and i asked them to also add a set of ECS ali SC bleed screws to my order (as the plastic ones get brittle and fail)... then the mechanic comes out and tells me one has already failed!!

One to check lads.. stage 2 car on 74k. For the sake of £50 get them swapped out for peace of mind.

goose

Update after yesterdays shenanigans at Awesome... the head of the plastic supercharge bleed screws just snapped right off, needing the plastic thread to be drilled out. I strongly recommend all folks with a 3.0T get these swapped out asap. they are a HUGE pain to do when the fail - and they WILL fail!!

These heat exchanger bleed screws, I'd think that Audi had worked out that fitting an aluminium bolt into an aluminium housing is a definite NO-NO, but I agree that the original plastic ones should get replaced "regularly", I under use my S4 but at 10 years old when I replaced the coolant for G12evo, I did buy and fit new plastic bleed screws - just in case, the old ones came out okay.
