Hibiscus Red TQS - New Car, New Project, cars been here before though.

Changing the oil again this weekend as well, covered about a 1000 miles now. So second change. I’ll change again in another 1000 miles. I’ve been using the updated VAG filter this far, which was miles bigger than the one that was on when I got it. But I bought this time the Transporter filter which people recommend. So I’ll fit that the next time. Cant believe how much bigger it is. Blimey.

And......................the new interior addition arrived today. Really happy with this. Needs a little bit of a buff before I fit it. But going to look so much better. Think I might get my gaitors trimmed in black Alcantara to match the armrest now. What gearknobs did RS4’s come with? Standard leather?

Plus, I now have a full door and dash trim set for sale. Blue carbon. I’ll post in ads, but PM me if interested.

Carbon gear surround installed. ‘Really’ need a new gaitor now.

The centre trim piece is missing whilst I blue the retainers back in place.

Bit of a long day today. I know the one problem with the car I have, is a noisy rear end when changing gear. Unsure what it really is. So today, a trip to Wales has resulted in a complete rear end drivetrain, Diff, Driveshafts, Propshaft, both diff mountings plus rear hub carriers.

My intention here is to refurbish as I go along. So initially the rear diff carrier will get poly-bushed and installed. The driveshafts will be disassembled, repainted and new mounts fitted both ends. If we’re still struggling I’ll get the prop-shaft rebuilt and install that. And in the most severe case, I’ll look into having the diff rebuilt, and install that.

Also, I will have new wheel bearings and lower bushes installed into the hub carriers, these will also be blasted and repainted.

So there we go, couple months worth of jobs right there.

****** hell!!!! You’ve spent some time and money on that car since I sold it several months ago.

Great to see its being well cared for. I was genuinely gutted when I sold it but it was unfair to let it fester on the drive not being used due to working from home.

Is it yourself I bought it from? Or is it yourself who lives in Norfolk who the guy I bought it from, had just bought it off? Wondered this when I first spotted your own build thread.

Yeah, spent a fair bit of time and money on it, but I’ve always wanted one, and just treating it like a rolling project currently.

No. I’m the ‘Norfolk guy’ who the chap you bought if off bought from me. He didn’t have it long then?

Had a few b5’s so got a soft spot for them - found them reliable well built cars.

Hibiscus red a great colour and best one in the TQS line up imo.

Well I hope it treats you as well as it did me and keep the updates going

Yeah he didn’t have it long, the guy I got it off had had it 2 weeks. He wanted to keep it but circumstances had changed during Lockdown, and he needed a van instead. Choose was lose the TQS, or lose the Corrado.

updates will be coming along. In the New year things should get interesting.

Audis had its first indiscretion today.......got in it and the Low Water symbol came straight on. Opened the bonnet and the tank is empty. Gutted.

I’ve refilled it, and drove to work. It’s been making a whirring noise on the belt drive for the last week or 2, I thought it was belt tensioner, no bother as I’ve got all the belt drive ready to go including water pump.

However, closer inspection............ the plastic water flange on the back of the head, which holds the sensor, is leaking. Common I know. Bit frustrating, as we didn’t have one in at work. So I’ve ordered the plastic flange and the metal pipe connected to it from AUTODOC. Considering changing the radiator out when we do the belts, as it will only cost £22.48 from work. I’ll keep checking the water daily, and as soon as the flange arrives from the continent, I’ll get it fitted.

still nowhere near as bad as the Alfa!!!!!!!!!!

The whirring noise will more than likely be the AC pulley bearing, if you get a stethoscope on it you'll know straight away :)

Thanks Sandip mate. Going to try and have a look at weekend, getting home too late at the moment, not enough light.

Soo.....did a few jobs on the Audi today. Weather is atrocious here in gloomy Manchester, so I didn’t have the patience to go any further once I was soaked and freezing cold.

Fitted the 2 new fog lights I got from AUTODOC, Depo lamps so fairly good quality. Was surprised at them being a H7 bulb too, so might get some LED upgrades soon for them. Easy enough job, just too dark today

That was followed by fitting a new air mass meter. With the car idling high, and smelling like the emissions are high, I did a bit of research and everything pointed towards the Air Mass not being up to spec anymore. So I thought I’d try one of the German aftermarket ones, which is a Stark.
Took it on a quick test run, and I’m pretty shocked if I’m honest. When I started the car, it was idling at 950rpm +/- which it hasn’t before. Was always idling at 1050rpm. When driving it, feels different, it doesn’t bog down a bit anymore when your moving off. And when you put your foot down, the acceleration seems to have improved to me. So, impressed with the results of that. The throttle still flutters a bit, so got a turbo boost solenoid, or N75 I believe some call it, on order. Hopefully this week a new water flange will arrive, together with this solenoid, and then I will be busy this coming weekend also.

My coolant flange arrived from AUTODOC, to which I thought great, finally fix the coolant leak issue. Alas, the flange is a dual sensor item, and the one on the AJL is a single. I remember these from years ago when a blank had to be supplied, which used to come with the flange itself. Hard to get hold of at factors now, so rang Audi this morning, and a black kit is on order for tomorrow. I’ll hopefully be able to fit it then, together with the metal pipe that bolts to it.

Also received a new Turbo Boost Solenoid. Looks bad for access to get to this item. May have to wait until I do the timing belts etc to fit the solenoid. Have a proper look when I do the coolant flange.

I have fitted my new plate, which was a gift. Going to have a go at making the rear lamps all red later, with some Lamin-X strips. If I don’t like them, I’ll go dark tint like I did on my old A4.

Busy day today all in all. As well as fixing the Mrs car, as I broke her ABS sensor when fitting a new wishbone. I also managed to nip to VW Dealer today and pick up my sensor blank for my new coolant flange. So got to work on the TQS.

Was a bit of a fath getting all the hoses off the metal pipe again, even more of a fath getting the bolts out for the coolant flange. But it’s a job well done really. I couldn’t even find a rubber seal for the coolant flange that was on the car and leaking. Either it fell out, or it wasn’t there to begin with, but I can’t see that. Cleaned everything up, then reinstalled. The metal pipe I got from AUTODOC, was a bit of a bad fit, so needed to some remanufacturing in order to align all the holes. Decided to do away with yet more spring clips, and replaced with jubilee clips.

I also fitted my new Oil Pressure Sensor, which is really so I know the sensor is new and doing its job. Got a real thing about the oil pressure on this engine. I’ll change the oil within the next few days too. Wait another 500-1000 miles then change again.

I also fitted my new side repeaters with prism bulbs. The old side repeaters were looking old, one of them was even stuck on as it was broken. So I thought.........I’d try some crystal ones. I’ve liked them in the past, all the later Audis had them. So I’m trying them. I think........I’ll have to wait and see if they grow on me. Jury’s still out.

Also fitted today was my red Lamin-X strips, onto the rear lights. Again, think I’m going to have to see if this grows on me. I have dark tint Lamin-X standing by if it doesn’t. But I’ve seen all red lamps done before and liked them. We’ll see. Will probably help when I’ve washed the car. Looking a bit dirty and unloved this week, which obviously isn’t the case.

Going to have to change the belts and tensioner son the front soon too. The tensioner is making a horrendous noise. Had to have a good listen today as it sounded like it was internal to the engine, but I’m pretty sure it’s the tensioner. The tensioner failed on my last B5, and that was sounding pretty bad too before it eventually failed.

So good days work. See what others think of the lamps etc. Still a lot of parts from AUTODOC to fit, I’ll bet round to it soon.

Managed a wash today, before Christmas. Now it’s clean, the side repeaters don’t look too bad. And the rear lamps........yeah growing on me.

Since fitting the new air mess meter, seem to have incurred a problem with the revs dropping to idle. They drop down past 900 rpm, where they should stop, drop to about 200, ie nearly stalls, then come back up to idle correctly. Idle isn’t lumpy, or unsteady. So unsure, I’m thinking air leak since I had lots of bits off to remove the air mass.

Anybody else had this issue and corrected it?

Finally got round to changing the oil again today. I’ll leave that in until end of Jan, mid Feb, than change again.

Also had a looksee at the N75 valve, and the recirculating valve whilst I was underneath. I’ll get some jubilee clips the correct size before I start removing. I’ll do that when it’s not sun zero temperatures outside.

Loving the Quattro in the snow. Not one bit of lost traction today.

Had to get out the house today and give the TQS a wash. Snow foam, then did the interior plastics too. It’s been a long 10 days, with my other half fighting this COVID virus. I’ll tell you what guys, if you think it’s just flu, your wrong. If you think it’s a myth, invented or something, your wrong. Jeez, what a terrible 10 days. Glad for some normality this week.

I have managed to remove the bushes and exhaust hanger from a diff carrier i procured. It was either Density Line bushes from 034 Motorsport, or Verkline bushes from Europe. I’ve gone with Verkline from Motion Motorsport. Plus a new exhaust hanger. I’ll respray the carrier before I fit these new parts.

I’ve also managed to get hold of a set of new upper rear wishbones, so the bushes will be removed from these, the arms renovated, and Powerflex bushes installed into these.

And then.........it will be time to renovate the prop shaft I have now, plus both rear driveshafts. Might have to slow down on the spending this next few months, let my business pick back up and start making money again.

Bought a new boot protector from Carbox this week, reduced to clear, plus will help with the tip runs this week without ruining the boot carpet.

Oh.............and I’ll be picking up a Full Leather Recaro interior plus RS4 front grille very shortly. Have to pick that up when Lockdown desists though. After that, my TQS interior will be up for sale, plus door cards, plus a leather centre armrest as well.

Lots of jobs to do with the parts I already have, hopefully be some more in progress images just as soon as this weather is a little better.

Finally got brassed off with my appalling beam pattern from my headlamps. I was just going to simply going to get some replacements from AUTODOC. But since mine are Valeo units, thought I’d at least try and save them if I can. I’ve seen it done so many times, and I have done side repeaters of my own in the past.
So I sanded the lamps down with 400 grit, got through the tarnish, and also through the indentations from stone contact etc. Worked my way up through 600-800-1500-2000-3000 grit. Then buffed with Autoglym headlamp polish. Worked out pretty well really. Took a while to get back back to smoothness, indentations everywhere. Seems to have made the pattern a lot better, lot more light on the road. But.......think I need to better/brighter/ higher quality LED bulbs. As the ones I have just aren’t cutting it.
But.....it’s another good job.

got a really odd noise coming from the belt drive, just need to get round to doing this timing belt overhaul, and get everything replaced.

car is still occasionally trying to stall when revs fall to idle too, ever since I out a new Air Mass on, not sure if this is the air mass which is no good, or because it’s highlighted a fault elsewhere.

* Last 2 images are before and after on the left hand side. Clearly see the indentations before sanding.

Hi Midas really enjoying reading this thread and seeing the rolling restoration. Strangely based on your location i'm probably the bloke who you mentioned early on when considering wheel choice as i have the 8 x 17 bolero's with hand polished rims in the Wigan area. Small world! Looking forward to more updates.

Did you try to sell these on eBay last year? Or was it yourself who bought them off eBay? I know there was 5 wheels in total on the listing, but only 4 polished.

In all fairness, I’m still troubled with wheels for the Audi. I’ve bought a set of 18” BBS CH wheels, which need a refurb. But I have this nagging inside my head, which says I should try and keep the look of the car standard, as it’s a bit of a survivor car really, not many left in standard condition.

Hi - yes it was me who listed them last year. 4 X 8 X 17 's with polished rims and 1 x 7 x 17 again polished rim but the centre spokes need painting. I still have them and am contemplating getting back into an A4 B5 myself - i have an A6 C5 1.9tdi at the moment but i dont do the miles to warrant a diesel anymore. As for wheel choice on your car i like all the wheel options you have - the BBS, the super tourings and the original bolero's, but if your now leaning towards standard - then refurbed bolero's with the diamond cut rim but with shadow chrome or graphite grey spokes and polished audi centre caps would really pop against the hibiscus red paintwork - so standard yet with a personal twist - but thats just me! Keep up the work - you've even got me looking for TQS Avants. Hens teeth - LOL.

Whatever I did with the wheels, the Boleros will be kept. I do love the Bolero design, I just wish they were an 18 not a 17. I know they do 18’s, but I just don’t like them as they are slightly different in design.
B5 Avants in good condition are like hens teeth, I’ll give you that. I missed out on that one last year, which then popped up again last September I think. Not seen another since.

Damn the ****** weather this weekend. Finally got some new parts arrive yesterday, over 3 weeks I’ve been waiting. Seems the pandemic combined with Brit has caused absolute chaos with carriers from EU to UK. I’ll do some prep work and try and fit the new bushes when the weather improves.

Changed all my interior bulbs from LED back to conventional bulbs last weekend. They were all flickering and just seemed dull. So swapped them all out. Also tried getting my door courtesy puddles lamps working. 2 of them are inoperative, with some corrosion on the bulb contacts. So ordered a set of 3 from eBay, I’ll at least try and fit these on Saturday afternoon.

I’m sure............I can smell fuel outside the car when I return to it now too. Slightly worrying. Fuel consumption hasn’t decreased, so unsure. But really wanted to get underneath and have a look over the fuel lines. I know I need to attempt ‘that fuel filter’ really. Definatly not doing that in freezing condition though.

Those bushes are a doddle to fit, just make sure the hole is cleaned out properly, I had a lip in the centre right the way round where the standard bushes didn’t meet tight, a wire brush in a drill took care of that, be generous with the grease too, plenty of it in that little packet

Really wanted a weighted gear knob. Seen a few I liked, but they are no longer made anymore. Then sported these on eBay, which I thought I’d try. So see how I like it in use tomorrow.

Hmmmm, first little hiccup with day to day running today. I know Ive had a little issue with the revs dropping when falling to idle for a week or 2 now, but today went a step further. Quick blast down the motorway for about 2 miles, but when I came off, I dipped the clutch and I didn’t notice the engine completely cut out, leaving me with no power in the middle of the roundabout. The car restarted, but would stall whenever I dipped the clutch at a junction. Hmm. When I reached my destination, I left it running and opened the bonnet, and it was misfiring. Went into the bike shop I’d wanted to visit, car was left about 20 mins. When I came out, started it expecting to have to nurse it home, but it was running ok again. Okayyy.......

This sounds to me like an electrical gremlin. I’d even say maybe ignition coils? Or could be coil loom? Anybody agree or disagree with this?

frustratingly I’ve got 4 coils on order from AUTODOC, but with the current Brexit/Border chaos, they are stuck in transit. Annoying. Any of you guys have input, I’ll always take advice however it comes.

Hi - do you have VCDS? Just thinking if its only stalling/misfiring at idle could be a dirty throttle body - or require a throttle body adaptation rest - there is a procedure you can run in VCDS - I once worked on an early A3 1.8T with similar symptoms where the throttle body was swapped for some reason and we had to do the re-set procedure to get it to idle properly rather than 'hunting' on tick over. I'm no expert - but may be worth looking into. Cheers Andy.

Appreciate that Andy. Unfortunately no I don’t have VCDS yet, it’s on my list to buy this year at some point. I did wonder about the throttle body in honesty. I did have it all off last year when the inlet manifold came off. Cleaned it out thoroughly etc. It’s -3 outside now, and rubbish all week, so kind of hoping it won’t play silly beggars again this week. At some point I’m going to go through everything I did to replace the air mass, I may put the old one back on as it seemed to occur just after I changed that. Can recheck the throttle body also, just make sure no carbon build up or anything odd.

Have I read that you can simply disconnect the battery to get the ECU to do a throttle adaptation? Or did I dream that.

Hi - not sure about disconnecting the battery to do a throttle body adaptation. I'm not too clued up on the 1.8t throttle body - does it have a throttle position sensor (potentiometer switch) mounted on the body that you can remove / clean and then re-position. Sometimes they can get dirty or start to fail and when you come off the throttle it doesnt tell the ECU to go to idle settings and the car stalls it can also cause a rough idle / misfire at idle. I have a very old version of VCDS that i use on my 2004 1.9 A6 Tdi. Its on a laptop running windows XP! which has seen better days - but if you're struggling i'm happy to plug it in and scan the car. I'm over near Standish - so not too far from Bolton. Cheers Andy

That’s really very good of you Andy, I may well take you up on that. I’ve got a Launch OBD tool, which I’ve always used on my own cars and it’s never failed to work. But when I plugged it into this Audi, it didn’t read it very well if I’m honest. Which is why I was looking to buy a VCDS tool.
Yeah, my TQS has a cable throttle actuation, with an electrical part on the opposite side. Sounds like a valid option what your saying. See how co-operative or unco-operative it gets tomorrow. thanks Andy

Hi - just re-read your previous posts and read that you'd replaced the MAF with a Stark item - and then reported the idling issues. Before looking elsewhere i'd definitely change it back to the original first (assume the original is a Bosch item?) or at least unplug the MAF and see if it still stalls. The car should run with the MAF unplugged as the ECU should base its fuelling on information from other engine sensors. If the car runs 'ok' with the MAF unplugged i'd go for a Bosch exchange item. Cheers Andy

The car should run with the MAF unplugged as the ECU should base its fuelling on information from other engine sensors. If the car runs 'ok' with the MAF unplugged i'd go for a Bosch exchange item. Cheers Andy

Hi Andy, yeah I found the original one in the shed today. Had it not been about -3 degrees by the time I got home and found it, I’d have reinstalled it. But it’s just too cold. I cut the metal dust caps off the tyre valves and managed to cut my finger open, so I’ll make this a weekend job. It is a Bosch one that I removed. If it is the original or not I’m unsure. Doesn’t have that burnt smell that defunct electronics have.

I know one thing I did notice last week, was a fuel odour when I was getting into the car. More on the drivers side. But could smell it when I was returning to the car, and it had been stood for an hour or so. Thought that was weird. I do really need to change the fuel filter, which I know is an **** of a job. And that’s definatly not something I want to do in -3 degrees.

As much fun as snow might be in a Quattro, I’ll be glad when this weather system subsides, and I can crack on with the jobs I need to do.

Couple more jobs today. Got 3 replacement courtesy/puddle lamps, as 2 of mine are broken, and also 1 doesn’t work at all. 2 look a lot better now they aren’t broken. The drivers rear door still won’t work, so that must be a working fault. I’ll look at that when it’s warmer.

Also took all the airbox apart today, in order to remove the air flow meter and put the old Bosch unit back in place. I noticed when removing, that there is a rubber diaphragm boot on the end of the air mass which pokes through the airbox wall to give a good seal. This was slightly kinked/pinched. Not sure if this was me being clumsy, or the air mass not fitting great because it was a copy. But in any case, I’ve put the Bosch air mass back in, and made sure the boot was in situ correctly.

Whilst I was down there, I installed the new pancake pressure valve I bought previously. I was going to replace the turbo boost solenoid, but I’ll do that when I take the front end off to do the timing belt etc.

And the good news............the car no longer has the problem of nearly stalling at junctions now. Unsure if this was as the diaphragm was causing an air leak, or the air mass was just pants. But anyway, revs fall slowly to idle now, as they should. So happy with that.

Evenin. Glad to see the running problems are resolved. Read an interesting thread on another forum regarding fuel odour on a 1.8T - as you've already mentioned the fuel filter can cause issues and the thread i read indicated that the valve in the fuel filter had failed causing fuel to leak out of the vent hose under the car. The poster also cleaned the charcoal filter which they found under the drivers side wheel arch trim - which may link in with you noticing the smell more on the drivers side. Cheers Andy

Yeah, definatly the fuel filter is a job as soon as it’s a little less cold. Definatly want to get it done.

Cleaning the charcoal filter, hmmm, ok, I don’t think I’ve ever read about that, what does that involve? I’d always thought they were sealed units.

Hi - just found the thread i read - my bad was a B6 1.8T but i suspect the fuel system is very similar - its a good thread with pics - if you google B6 1.8T Petrol/Fuel smell and find the vwaudiforum.co.uk post it might help you identify your fuel smell issue.

Bit busier today, always helps when the weathers playing ball.

My centre console fascia panel isn’t liking my phone holder so much. The little tin clips have parted company with the fascia on a previous occasion also. I’m trying Q-Bond this time, hopefully this will hold it together better. It’s held my roof box together in the past, so it should do a good job here.
