IGNITION PROBLEMS

Hey people. Any ideas on this. Got into my S2 avant (aby engine) the other morning went out n about no probs. then left the car outside house and tried to go out again in the afternoon and it would not tick over. I thought the immobilisor had gone pair shaped (CLFFORD CONCEPT 300 G4) so I tried new batteries in the remote and removed the car batterie to reset, but I dont think it can be that because i was able to bump start the car. Could it be the ignition barrel ? I can hear the relay ticking as I turn the key so I am confussed on this one. Any suggestions would be great.

Could also be a dud battery... i.e car battery... on cell down makes all the difference to these sensitive little beasties.....My VR6 did the same recently.. hence new battery, biggest I could get in the space to account for wipers n' things...
