My car is an A4 3.0 218 TDI S-Tronic, is 3 years old in September and currently on about 51k miles.

The car in on variable (long life) servicing and was last serviced in January this year when it had full oil change and S-Tronic oil changed, along with all four brake pads and discs.

For the last month or so, I've been getting a message on my dashboard saying "Inspection Due". As I'm due an MOT next month I phoned up to book it in. The guy told me that the brake fluid is also due to be changed, which is every two years apparently. Price is about £65 - can get it done locally for £30 less than that, so I said leave it. I also asked about this "Inspection Service" message.

First - how can brake fluid change be due at 3 years if it's meant to be done every two years? Surely it should have been due last year when I had my service done? I don't recall it being done previously though.

Second - I asked for a quote on the "Inspection" and was told £225. I declined for now. However - what on earth does an "Inspection" include?? It doesn't need oil changing as you can see from the MMI, it's on relatively new pads/discs on all four corners, it's just gone through an MOT (all done at this Audi dealership) - so apart from maybe a pollen filter and fuel filter (which surely should have been done on the last service at around 40k miles), what else can possibly be required?
When I took it in for the MOT, I mentioned it to the girl on the service desk (i.e. what needs doing as it's not due oil for a long time) - she wasn't aware of the price, but just said "oh, that'll probably just be for your brake fluid". So let's say I take it to ATS who can do the brake fluid for £36 - will they be able to clear the message? Or is there actually something else I should be having done??

Dealers have been hopeless at explaining what it actually is - and I'm certainly not shelling out £225 for someone to tell me everything has already been done. It is simply popping up because I've hit the 3 year mark?

To add insult to injury it also failed the MOT due to perished rear coil mounts! Luckily covered under warranty but means a trip back next week for the work to be done and MOT completed.

It's three years for the first change then every two from there on. To rid yourself of the message you will either have to a dealership perform this or a Audi specialist unless you've access to vcds or odb11 it can be done through them. Although not 100% certain...

Ah I see... Does anyone know if they are likely to charge to remove the message? I'm reluctant to pay an extra 30 quid for the fluid change, but I guess I will have to. They said it's a fixed price so can't price match.

What about the so called inspection then? Is the first guy mistaken and it is only actually brake fluid needed?

Just had the brake fluid done on mine at just over 3 years old at an Audi dealer. The inspection service warning had started to come up and, like you, I'd had an inspection service done a year ago. Anyway, fluid changed and they reset the service counter so all good.

65 quid seemed fair to me, you can liberate as many soft drinks from their customer fridge as you like as well.

It wouldn't be too bad, but just seems a bit excessive for such a small job when it's pretty much half that elsewhere. Plus it's already in the workshop having some warranty work done.

You have the option to have it done at an Audi specialist, main dealer prices are always going to be more expensive but at around £21 a year I wouldn't feel the need to quibble. Same for the air con service...
