Is it possible to connect a Wii through HDMI??

It's possible, if you have to - Does you telly not have any SCART / Composite / Component connections?
You'd probably be looking at either a composite video to HDMI encoder, or a component to HDMI encoder. Basically it's a gadget you can feed either a composite (the standard Wii A/V cable), or component video (Y Pb Pr - optional Wii cable widely available) signal, and it's converted to an HDMI encoded digital signal to be passed to the telly. eBay gadgets start at about £50 - See HERE and HERE for composite, or HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE for component. Just be careful with the audio input side of things on the component ones, as some take S/PDIF as optical or coax as opposed to the simlper RCA. You'll still need a Wii -> Component cable to go down that route too. The other way to do it is with an HDMI receiver, Pioneer and loads of the rest do them starting at around £120-£150 rising to telephone numbers.
I'd only consider doing it over HDMI if you absolutely have to though, if you can use component straight up to the telly, you'll get the best quality video a Wii can deliver (which isn't all that much better from the standard composite out), but without having to shelll out so much (the cable's probably a tenner).

Thanks for that Rob, i've got it plugged in through the scart on the tv at the moment but i thought that if i went with an HDMI input the picture would be as good as the xbox but wasnt sure if the Wii was up to it to be honest, but thought it might be worth a shot. Think i'll save some pennies and keep it as it is now reading that.

No worries. Yep, the limitation in picture quality is in the Wii, not the interconnect - unfortunately. As I say, using the component video cable (often referred to as RGB - when actually it's Y Pb Pr (luma and sync, difference between luma and blue, and difference between luma and red)) might yield a slight improvement, but it might not even be enough to notice.

I have our Wii connected using a component cable to our Onkyo home cinema amplifier (which upscales output to 720/1080p). This then connects to the TV with HDMI (upscaled to 1080P).
As Rob says, the Wii is the limiting factor, as despite the upscaling through the Reon VX upscaler (onto a full HD 1080P display), the picture quality does not improve from the standard component input directly linked into the TV. Basically you are only as strong as the weakest link (eg. the Wii signal). Component will offer benefit over scart, but then your about as good as it gets.
Wii video output is so low (can't remember if it is 480i/p or 576i), so you can't expect too much!

You can get Component to HDMI Converters from the likes of Keene Electronics, Bit it wont be any better than just using the component input.

The only affect it could have is to slightly degrade the picture/sound quality, as you're introducing another set of connections that don't need to be there.

component is the way forward for sure, but if you have one of the many annoying TVs that insist on putting the component inputs on the side of the TV so they stick out, then I can understand you wanting to explore other options.

The Wii can only spit out 480p over the component cable (you have to select edtv) in the settings menu too.
