Lowering a b6 sport (springs only)

Has anyone here lowered a b6 sport without changing the perches, just by using springs?? I looking to lower the front and rear using springs only and still get the front sitting a little lower that the rear. Know I know the sports are a little lower anyway so what's the ideal mm to lower them (front and rear)???

There is no ideal, it depends on what look you like. For me, much more than 20mm below Sport ride height looks too low. Plenty of others will disagree I'm sure. If you looked for 40-50mm lowering springs then that will drop your car 20+mm which (for me) is perfect.
 
Thanks James, so 40 or 50 or 50 at front 40 at rear??? I'd like it lower but not stipidly low. Have you got a pic of a sport thats been lowered 20mm below stock??? and will the perches still need changing for b5 ones or can you comnpensate by lowering the front more than the rear using springs?

Why are you so opposed to changing the perches? I've noticed in a few threads you keep saying that you don't want to put the b5 perches on. The only springs I've seen are some eibach sport lines which do a 50/40mm drop front and rear.

I bought apex 40mm springs and fit the perches. If the springs are coming off it really is a 2 minute job to fit the perches. Literally 2 minutes.

Because if it can be done using just springs there's no point buying both springs and perches

People who use perches do so as it's the easiest, most cost effective way to deal with the issue of the B6 always sitting a few mm too high at the front. A lot of very experienced B6'ers have been doing this for several years, in my opinion resisting using them is just making unnecessary work for yourself.

I haven't got a pic of a Sport dropped 20mm, but I'm sure someone will have one.
 
True, but as said they're the only ones I've seen with a different lowering rate for front and back. To be honest, I have no idea how good the eibachs are compared to the apex...I suspect they're quite similar, being a spring. I imagine the shocks would make more difference, but I am very much an amateur ha! But, the price of the apex + perches is similar to eibachs.

Here's a pic of mine. Sorry it's not the best pic, it's not flat where I park it and I've not had chance to go get some proper pics yet.

So let me get this right haha, that Eibach kit is 40mm rear and 50mm front, if I fit these then perches wouldnt need to be changed, right??
 
That would be my assumption that you wouldn't need them, as the eibach claim to lower 50mm up front. If it all goes wrong I don't want you blaming me :p

Or have a search on here to see whether anyone has fitted the eibach sport lines. Quattrojames fit some eibachs I think, but I ant remember which off the top of my head.
 
ok mate thanks, I'm wondering if I did do the 40mm rears and 50mm fronts + pearches, the front would be tooooo low :ohmy:

red on front with 18" After changing my fronts 3 time
to get my perfect look !! With post pict s. in morning

IMAG0204Just found this pic with the eibach sport kit fitted, looks like it wants a little more at the front, I think the 40 50mm kit plus pearches will be spot on :icon_thumright:
 
Hi in my opinion I think the eibach 40/50 and perches in my personal opinion as I have 19"s on my car and on stock sport suspension and its sits way high at the front with a bit of tuck at the rear. Il be doing this in the near future when I get a bit cash together.
 
To be honest, I think the eibachs with perches would be too much. Mine is on 40/40 springs with the perches and is lower at the front. I'd love the back to drop just a little bit.

Here's another pic, sorry it's not the clearest again. It's on a slight slant, but not as bad as the picture makes out. And you can see the back is higher. 50 on the front with perches would probably have tuck while the back has a gap. Each to their own, but if anything I wish my back was now a bit lower ha.

Ok crazy nice one, Ive just ordered the kit so I'll try it without the perches first, can always fit them later if needed. I've just had to order 4 tyres too as mine are 245 45 18, bet tey will rub like mad when fitted!! ordered 4 235 40 18's still got to order 4 15mm spacers yet, its been an expensive night!:no: :racer:
 
Ah cool, I'm excited for you. Lowering my car is my favourite thing I've done to it. Just persuading the wife to let me get some 18's for it now :(

Once we removed the cursed pinch bolt it only took about 2-3 hours to lower the fronts, so retrofitting perches wouldn't be too hard.
 
Yeah I've read horror storys about those bolts, I've also heard that it can be done without removing them???? Any places where I can get 4x 15mm spacers from???
 
Have you had any control arms fit recently? If you have you might be ok. Mine were originals, so 10 years old and loads of corrosion.

Check ebay for spacers.
 
Yes it has, I've only just bought the car and it came with 12 months mot, it was mot'd on the 6th dec 2012 and I just had a look at the mot cert and it had an osf upper arm and pinch bolt replaced on the 6th dec. BONUS! I got quite a good deal on it really (well I think so) 02 1.8T Sport, 12 mont mot, full audi serv history, 106k £2500, got 6 month warrenty on it too
 
Try the site sponsors for spacers too, make sure you get hubcentric ones.
 
Can you point me in the right direction please james?? Also My rims are fat fives et45 (i think) Been told I need 15mm spacers to end up with a 30mm off set, sound about right??
 
Well one side should be easy then....just hope the other side has been done at some point. Stick copper slip on the bolts when you put them back in. I'd consider new bolts too, according to the Haynes manual you're supposed to replace them each time you remove them (which seems excessive) . Always best to have a spare as for a few quid you don't want to hold the job up.

I am so jealous of your fat 5's.

Crazy if you do get 18's THEY HAVE TO BE FAT FIVES!!! Just got to poke them out abit now, I hope 15mm will be enough, I would of thought so eh?!

I have no idea on spacers, sorry. I've never looked into them yet as I have been avoiding them until I got my car lowered. Get on audizine and check out the b6 thread. Those Americans know how to dress an a4 with nice wheels. They even have a sticky in the b6 bit for wheels, spacers and offset. There's a couple in there who have fat 5's so maybe you can see what they run spacers wise.

And yeah, fat 5's or s4 wheels are my faves, also very expensive. There's a set on here for 450 with no tyres... And in Southampton. :(
 
Just keep an eye out on ebay mate, I gave £330 for mine with tyres, they needed a refurb tho...

I think a final ET of 30 will be bang on...

Now, do I think 30mm drop on the front plus perches will be too low?? Hmmmmm LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL:yum:
 
I love the looooooow too, but my brother in law recently did his passat and ended up shredding two good tyres on his inner arch from the rubbing. It's a fine art getting it just right.

You lowering it yourself? You pretty good with car stuff?

And that's a good price for fat 5's, I'll keep my eyes peeled.
 
Nah there's a guy that I work with who can do just about anything, he's just done my mate M3 ;)

Thanks James, I'm pretty crap when it comes to this stuff, I just pray that after everything fitted nothing rubs, I've looked at pics of a4's with a final offset of 30, looks nice and flush with the arch, which is what I want.

No mate. Lowered on Tein UK springs with standard shocks. IMO very good springs. Used on most of the Jap ricers. They manufacture specialist stuff for drifting and stuff like that.

They've lowered my car nicely. It's a bit harsher as you'd expect from lowering, but no bouncing around, very smooth to be honest.
 
Ahh cool, I've gone for the Eibach 40 50mm sportline kit, cant really find pics of b6 sports that have used this kit, starting to wonder if I should order perches too hmmmmmmm
