I would agree that diesels in winter can drop below normal temp if you have the heater on full at idle as the engine isn't producing enough heat to maintain normal temp. I've not noticed on my A3 because I've never had it on idle in very cold weather with the heater on for long periods but in another car I have, it would drop with the heater on in winter unless you were driving it.
