I assume I've got something wrong in the green menu?

Hi guys, I have fitted all 3gp mmi and just have this patch lead to make for new 20 pin gateway, as running on old 26 pin 0071 software at the moment, all works apart from time and instrument cluster comms in mmi seetings with old gateway, hence why I want to fit the 20 pin gateway.

Are the pins connected correctly in picture on right, written number on left of 20 pin gateway picture are off old 26 pin gateway pins on left of picture.

only asking as want to make sure pin 7,17,20 are connected correctly and aslo got pin 3,4 and 12 left over.

Hey guys, i see a lot of people have problems with the 3GP and i`m one of them. Today we retrofitted a unit from 4G and now nothing except the multimedia is working. All options in Car are greyed out. We try fiddling with the green menu but nothing worked. Im running 20 pin fl can with sw 0035, i know the only newer one is from Q7 with SW 0058, but such file does not exists, Is it sure that if we get such gateway things will start working. I also read that the unit need to run in Q7 mode, what does that mean exactly, Doesnt q7 and a6 share the same software. Here is the car log:

So I'm learning a few things the hard way. Turns out my original gateway had the 0035 software. I installed a Q7 gateway (0058 software) hoping to fix the exact problems listed above. No luck with either gateway. Still missing steering wheel controls and MMI info on cluster, Car menu is greyed out and clocks aren't correct.

I really believe it's a simple VCDS or green menu option. I have tried every combination I've found on the forums so far but no success.

we made a progress today. you need to download software for a4/a5 and then a lot of things start working. software for a6/a7/a8 is different. it also works with 0035 gateway

Did your 3G+ unit come out of an A5? What method did you use to update the firmware? I have already updated mine to the latest A6 version.

My unit came from A6 4G, The update was done via user defined mode and ignore region and variant (in order to be able to change the software), i can`t give you the exact details of what parts of the software was selected to be updated because i had a guy to do it for me. If your unit shows HN+R it means you are using the wrong software and you need to change it. Also if you select the Q7 from green menu and you don`t see it in car is another sign. After updating the unit my Car and Tel got swapped over. Setup is now Menu and Name is Tone

Thanks for the detailed info. Can you confirm your steering wheel volume control works? I see your clock on the screen also works.

So if I understand correctly I need the firmware for Q5/Q7 instead of A6/A7/A8? I hope it's that simple.

Yes, exactly. You need the software for Q5/Q7. Everything works in the menus - steering wheel, clock, service interval, All of the lights, locks, ac. Only thing that does not work is to set the speed limit and i didnt see how you can control the board computer options, but i didnt look too much. Also i can`t get rid of traffic signs menu yet. Also i can confirm that gateway 0035 works perfect and you don`t need the 0058

Ok, I'm getting some errors trying to update to HN+_US_AU3G_K0942_6.

If I enable "user defined" in the green menu, I get an error saying there is a variant mismatch, which makes sense. So if I also enable "ignore region and variant" in the green menu it tells me there is no update found. Same files, same SD card.

Does anyone know the trick to forcing it to install firmware for a different variant? My 3GP unit came from a 2012 A8 and this is firmware for Q5/Q7.

I feel like I'm walking down the path to a bricked MMI...

you can take a look here and read through pages: It says

First time:
user definied mode + ignore variant in green menu -> without reboot to red update menu -> Userdefinied -> mark everything with MU in Front like MuTnrRef MuINIC and so on... when you marked everything with MU in front, then start the update (dont look for MU9411 ... only flash the others) - if version is same it doesn't matter mark it!

After Update it will tell you that MU9411 is not reach-/startable don't get in panic press something like cancel and finish the update.
------------------------------
Second Time:
user definied mode + ignore variant in green menu -> without reboot to red update menu -> Userdefinied -> now you must have there a MU9498 ... go inside and mark everything, then start the update! After that you must have the right unit again for AU3G Unit.

I've done this many times.
PS: Use original Metafile, don't mess with it and don't change something!

So as i know just dont enable bootloader. Try that and see if something will start working, then you have to update sss and other parts

Just read the topic good and good luck. I know even if you mess the software it can be recovered but i dont have such experience

manniakk you have saved my project! I wish I'd had this info 3 months ago but better late than never. I was preparing myself to accept the fact that this would never completely work right...

I was able to initiate the update from the red menu (earlier I was going to MMI Setup from the top right corner of the main menu)

I performed step 1 from the other thread and my version now shows HN+_US_AU3G_K0942_6. My clocks and steering wheel controls work and all of my car menu settings are now accessible! My menu and tone buttons are in the wrong places but maybe the 2nd iteration of the update will fix that, but it's bed time.

Thanks so much for your prompt replies and for sharing your progress!

In summary, the upgrade looks to be possible with just a head unit and firmware update to HN+, assuming you already have a 20 pin gateway with SW 0035. A 20 pin gateway with SW 0058 also works, I can personally confirm.

New problem... wondering if anyone else has experienced it.

After the firmware update everything works perfectly, BUT... if I navigate through any of the menus the system gets very sluggish, then unresponsive, then eventually crashes and reboots. IF I don't touch anything, it seems to be happy to keep running smoothly until I shut the car off.

For example, let's say the NAV screen was up last time I drove it. I could start the car, leave it on nav, it will auto connect to my phone and stream music or play the radio with no issues until I shut the car off, as usual. The Nav screen will be active, not glitchy or anything. Volume and next track keys work and don't cause a crash.

On the other hand, if I were to start it up again on the NAV screen for example, but then go to the car menu and even just look at the menu options then back out with no changes, it seems to start the process of crashing the whole system.

What's odd is it's not a sudden black screen, the system keeps functioning but slower and slower until it freezes. Even the music will keep playing until it reboots itself. From the time it starts to lag to the crash/reboot is usually a couple minutes or less.

I have also noticed the green menu seems to take a lot longer to load than it used to. I can't remember for sure if this was before or after the MMI update though.

Has anyone else seen this after a retrofit? It didn't do this before I went over to the HN+ firmware.

I'm planning to go through the firmware update steps again to see if it helps, but open to other suggestions. In the meantime I also updated to the latest maps but I was having this issue before that.

Hi everyone! Sorry to bring up this old thread but I need a little help.
I've got an 05 A6 Avant 3.2 Q without the electric tailgate. I'm aware this retrofit has been done a few times successfully, but I want to do all my research first before I try. B5Nut's brilliant write-ups on the C6 project outlined the majority of it, but I have a few things I want to clarify.

I have access to a wrecking a6 (2008 Pre-F Avant 2.8 Q) which I bought the entire interior from last year (absolutely everything visible except headliner due to sunroof). I am going back to that place soon because I want to get the components for the electric tailgate. I didn't realise it had it at the time so I didn't buy them, but when I got home I saw the button on the tailgate interior panel. I have done as much research as I can get online, but still have questions that I want to get answered. I need to do it in one trip because it's 700km away. (I live in NZ)

The parts I believe I will need to get are
- Motors along with tailgate drive control units etc (4F9 827 852 F & 851 F)
- Convenience/Comfort Control Module (4F0907289 with suffix either "B, CS, CQ, DQ, BQ, AQ, Q, K"), (SW: 4F0 910 289 K etc)
My current Comfort control module is 4F0907289 "G" so I believe I will have to replace it with one from the wrecking car.

Power latch (4F9 827 383 E or G Required for Quattro models with 4/6 cylinder engines
Brackets for driver motors (4F9 827 603)
Wiring Harness and bolts etc.

Is there anything else I will need to get, and what coding will need to be done? I assume the comfort control module controls the other features like keyless entry, interior ambient lighting etc. My car has the ambient lighting but the other car doesn't, and I will be transferring those parts over to the wrecking interior when I install it, so will I have to code that into the replacement comfort controller?

I'm new with all this coding stuff so don't know what will be required - I have OBD11. Will I need VCDS or something? Or can I get the dealer to do this when I get the component protection removed?
Thanks in advance!!

Your biggest issue will be having CP removed, some dealers won't remove CP from used components. I would either contact your local dealer first or search around for a third party company that has access to a genuine licensed version of ODIS. Coding is straight forward but I have no idea if ODB11 will work as it's not something I've used before. Dealer won't be great with coding, so I would look around for a retrofit company that may be able to help.

Also just removing the tailgate harness won't be enough, there are other harness components that will be apart of the main interior harness. Your best of buying the retrofit harness from someone like Kufatec.

Thanks for the reply. I've contacted my dealer and they say they're happy to do the CP for a fee provided I can prove where the components came from. Are you sure my best option is to buy a Kufatec harness? the car's already stripped right down so removing any further wiring would be a breeze. Do you still have the Kufatec manual by any chance?

The Kufatec harness is the quick and easy solution, if you have the time and access to elsawin or erwin then you could make your own but will just take time. No sorry don't have the manual anymore it was 6 years ago I did the install and deleted the C6 docs I had.

Make my own? Surely I could just take what's required out of the wrecking car since that has everything already installed? And do you know if the change in comfort module could affect the operation of my other options like ambient lighting if the wrecking car doesn't have it? Thanks

Cannot advise any further on using the harness from another car, it's not something I've ever done before I found it easer to either make my own harnesses or just buy one if they are cheap enough. Unknown on the modules it's all depends on how they are coded and some functions including power tailgate won't work with CP enabled

The next retrofit will be MMI 3G, been scouring ebay for cheap parts and so far done quite well.

Reviving this thread as I have started the MMI 2G to 3G upgrade.
I have to say that this write up is amazing. I have searched and looked a lot, but nothing is as complete and detailed as this.
But it seems that the photo links aren't working any longer.
Do you still have the photos?

I also have a question about the Bose amp. My car is equipped with Bose surround system, and there are not many 3G amps to be found.
Can a Bose amp from a C7 work?
They are a lot easier to find.
As far as I know all the C7 came with MMI 3G or 3G+ as standard.

Sorry no longer have the pictures.

Yes you can use a C7 AMP I used one in my C6.

Sorry no longer have the pictures.

Thank you. Then I'm one step closer. The amp is already ordered.
I have another question maybe you can answer. When upgrading to 3G+ you should use the control panel from a Q7 as there are some changes in the buttons.
Are the radios compatible in our cars? I found a radio (with Dab+, because we don't have FM in Norway any longer) with number 4M1035021
This have a sim slot, which means it's a 3G+ If I understand correctly?
Maybe I should take the leap and go straight for 3G+ instead of 3G.
The only thing that needs changing when upgrading from 3G to 3G+ are the main unit and nothing more?

Here are some pictures of it.

You could use a Q7 control panel, I just used the one from the C6 as I was not bothered about a few buttons not being correct. If your car is 2G then you will need to replace or flash the can-gateway, new climate control panel (3G compatible) and instrument cluster (3G compatible).

Both 3G & 3G+ units had sim slots, but for 3G there were very limited online services. Also remember that the google overlay you got on 3G+ has now been disabled by Audi. There could be a workaround for the older 3G+ by a users called Congo on https://www.a5oc.com/ but he charges around £150 for the fix.

For part numbers I cannot remember it was 6 years ago since I completed the installation and have not done another once since then.

I understand. I think it's great that you still reply to this thread, 7 years after I was started.

I have sourced all the 3G parts now that the Bose amp is ordered. I'm also doing a ACC retrofit at the same time now as I got all the parts necessary from a crashed car. That retrofit also required a new can gateway.
I have a 20 pin gateway, so I have to repin it. Hopefully it will work.
I have found a few MMI units with sim slot in Germany and most of them looks the same at the connectors. Maybe I just buy one and try it. Worst case, I just have to sell it again.

One of the big issue is finding a friendly dealer or garage that will remove component protection so you will need access to ODIS.

I talked to my local dealer, and they were really helpful and understanding. I think it is because it's alot of people building and modding Audis in my town. They had done this several times before, and they could remove the CP on my MMI upgrade, but they said it could be difficult on the ACC.
Then I found a local shop that could do it, and also correct the milage on the cluster at the same time for a fair price.

After a lot of waiting, the time has come to start the conversion to 3G+
I have repinned the gateway and converted the infotainment cables to the quad lock, but nothing works.
The screen remains black..

I also ran into another problem with the Bose amp I bought from a C7:
The pins are different. I tried to do a quick search in the difference between them, but I didn't get any wiser.
Did you have the same issue too?

I would like to mention that I don't have a radio unit in the car. I can't see that it's necessary to get the MMI going? I bought a Kufatec dab+ unit I planned on installing instead.

Yes the pinout is different between the Bose AMP's, so you would need to fit a new plug. I got all the pinouts from elsawin or you can download them from Audi's erwin web site. If the screen is black then you have a wiring issue. Can you communicate to the 5F unit with your diagnostic software?

It must have been a wiring issue, but what it was is a mystery. I had connection with 5F, but it came up "error communicating with screen" I checked all the cables and then double and triple checked. I found nothing wrong. Suddenly it just started to work, and it haven't been a issue since.
Everything is connected and seems to be working at the limit the CP gives.
I have talked to a local shop about removing it, but I have to wait a week until they had time to do it. In the meantime I will retrofit the ACC, so they can remove the CP at the same time.
I have one more question.
It's about the Fakra.

I have a new blue GPS wire from the antenna to the 5F, but do I need the red Fakra from the phone to the 5F?
My car was originally fitted with the Nokia phone in the center console, but this was missing when I bought the car.
I use the Bluetooth on my phone, so there shouldn't be a reason for me to take the red Fakra from the back to the 5F? Am I right?
I have used the wiring diagram from this site. It was really helpful.
It's in German, but running it through Google translate helps.

No need to run the red fakra cable, it would be pointless as it would never be used.

Again I come for help.
I finally got the CP removed, but as my unit came from A8 I need to change the sw to Q7.
But I can't open the green menu.
My setup button doesn't work. How can I access the green menu then? Is there any other option?
All the other buttons seems to do like they say except "name" which is "menu."

Ok, so another issue. Maybe not the right place for it, but since there are several people here that have done it, it's worth a try.

I read the whole thread before I started, and read initially that the 3gp from A8 are no good in our A6. Then later in the thread some models are "convertable".

In good faith I bought one from a 2014 A8.
The side of the unit say 4H0 035 670 P
But vcdc say 4H0 035 654 H
I don't know what is the right number, but to the point.

This is apparently a MU9411 and as I understand I should have MU9498
Is this doable?
What do I have to do? Can I download the correct software and force install it through green menu, or will this brick the unit?
I downloaded and tried the newest software for Q7 with standard install and as expected denied permission due to different MU versions.

Only certain A8 units will accept the change in MU, later ones don't work. what they are I cannot remember, just to long ago.

However I do know of a unit for sale, that will be plug and play as it was my old unit. I sold it years ago, and is now being sold on by the last buyer.

I understand.
Was maybe hoping somebody else would answer, but I guess they abandoned the thread when got theirs working.

Could you pm me? I might be interested if it turns out mine don't work.
