Just had a cal from my Audi dealer to say that the 'whining' noise I've been experiencing requires a brand new gearbox - total cost £3861 inc Parts+Labour+VAT. Unbelievable!!! They said it's bearings in the gearbox that have worn - but it'd be at least £2k labour to start stripping it down, and not really worth it... I told them to get some money from Audi UK, and they've come back and said Audi will pay 50%, but I still hjave to find £2k. It's an A4 can 3.0 Qauattro sport, I've had it from brand new (04 plate) - so just 5 years old... but only 55,000 miles. And I've treated the car so well - loved it to bits, so treated it with kid gloves. Any ideas anyone? Is this common?
PS New to the forum - apologies for the rubbish username!

If it helps i bought my A4 avant with 46k on the clock a year ago....i noticed that when i got the bite point it was juddering so i sent it into audi and they said it was the cluch plate so they replaced it that didnt work. They wanted silly money from me.

I found out that there is a common problem with gearboxes or the fly wheels that cause problems when i mentioned this to them they went quite and I went on my way.

Im not sure its the same problem but id have them for it.

Check the honest john website that is where i found the info regarding the problem...

Tis only a stab in the dark but anything is worth a look.

probably worth looking at a second hand box, and getting a specialist to install it. Save you a LOT of cash.

That's probably the most you'll get from Audi. It's worth looking into consumer law. The law covers you for a period of time regardless of manufacturers warranty (6 years in England, 5 in Scotland IIRC) from purchase if you can reasonably prove that you'd expect the item to last longer than it has. The problem you'd have is proving it as a car could have had a lot of abuse in 55k and your driving style may have contributed to the failure. TBH, I think 50% is pretty good going.

multitronic ?

Not on a Quattro.

the first thing i would do is get a second oppinion and even a third you cant be too trusting these days

I'd second that!
