Hi all

Just bought a beautiful s4 B6 with 120k miles.

Had 5k rebuild at AmD 4k miles ago all new pensioners, chains etc

On start up the chain are quiet but when it's cold I get a strange grinding/whirring sound - sounds like some sort of bearing noise.

I'm sure it's not the top end of the engine......sounds like something else? Seems to always go away when the car has warmed up?

Any ideas?

Thanks all

Alright mate , welcome to B6 S4 ownership , your in for one hell of a ride ! Looks like a great buy and sounds like it has good service history ! what you will probably find is that the noise is the secondary air injection pump which is activated during cold startup to protect the catalytic converters, the rpm usually hovers around 1k and then drops to 800 and at this point the engine should idle nicely ! Youl get used to all sorts of noises from the big lump but generally this is what you should expect from a 40 valve chain driven 4.2 v8 lol !

I have owned mine for over a year and have spent several hours researching noises that i thought were odd however are totally normal.

Hey man. Nice purchase. You’re in for an emotional rollercoaster of happiness, adrenaline and slow soft sobbing

There great cars. Try not to worry to much. I had 63k on mine when I bought it. 8 weeks later a tensioner went and through both chains off. I had 16 new inlet valves. So yeah fun times in the first 12 months of ownership I’d spent the value of the car again. I’ve had new suspension. Top end rebuild. Various electronics replaced and fixed. But 3 years later and I still have her so that should tell you something

Have fun and welcome to the madhouse
