The foam type insulation that lines the underside of the plastic TOP engine cover has perished and is starting to shed bits of foam dust all over the engine.

I can't see a spare anywhere as i'm presuming they sell it as a complete part with the plastic for big £££

Has anyone else had this problem and sorted it in a DIY fashion?

Nope no spares available, same happened to mine and I had to buy new one and about £130 from memory.

You may find a half decent used one on ebay if you're lucky

Hmm well that sucks! Expensive for just a bit of plastic& foam!

I might try and line it with something like this

Or this

Just gotta check the temperature rating of the foam!

The second link seems the best option although it doesn't say if it is self adhesive.

Material has arrived!

Got enough to make at least 2 I think!

Its about 3mm thick and despite the foil side feeling like plastic, it doesn't melt or burn when I hold a lighter to it.

It's a layer of foil, then foam, backed with a peelable sticky surface.

The foam DOES melt/shrivel under a flame, but I expect the original Audi foam does too.

Next step is to cut to shape!

In theory as it appears a fair bit denser than the original foam it should be fine if not better for the job in hand.

You've done a good job pal!

@F1ux has this held up to its job?

Thanks for the reminder! I was a bit anxious to check in case it had melted all over the engine.....

I'd say its all good! Looks as good as the day I put it on! No residue on the engine or anything!

Nice one....I'm glad it's OK as I've just ordered some as mine seems to have deteriorated so much in the past month :disappointed:
