Thought i would post this here for anyone looking at going to the ring or just interested in what i got up to there.
â
The trip was organised by a mate who coincided it with his stag do. Our little group of 6 people (3 cars) tagged onto a larger group who have done the ring trip for the past few years so in total there were 10 cars and 22 people. The cars that went were Audi S3, Peugeot 106 GTI, Mk4 Escort RS Turbo, Mk1 Jetta PD130, Focus ST, 2x EVO6âs, Vauxhall Vectra 2.8 VXR, Vauxhall Vectra V6 and a BMW 328i.
We left the UK at 23:30 on the Tuesday night (24.06.2014) and we decided to do it in 1 hit, 670 miles. We took our time driving down to Dover where the Ferry was book for 08:00 on the Wednesday.
After a quick breakfast on the ferry we carried on with our journey heading through France, Belgium, Holland and finally Germany. We were staying in a small village called Kottenborn just outside of Adenau. The 6 of us in our group decided to rent an apartment, it was basically the basement of someoneâs house, but it was clean, well equipped, close to the Ring and cost £10 a night. We arrived late afternoon and after a quick unpack headed down the local supermarket to stock the cupboards. After picking up the essentials â breakfast and Beer we headed into Adenau to find a place to eat and have a few drinks before calling it a night. We found a very nice Pizza place called Pinocchioâs in the town the food was well priced, tasted great and the beers kept flowing. I highly recommend this place if you stay in Adenau. After a 16 hour drive, 670 miles, being awake for 44 hours straight I think it was time to hit the sack.
Thursday morning, woke up to the smell of bacon and bratwurst being ****** in our kitchen. A quick check on the cars mine was pretty much ok bar a seized wiper linkage and a blown light ballast, Peugeot 106 was all fine, the only major issue we had was with the RS Turbo which hit a huge pothole on the way down knocking the steering rack up making the UJ really tight around the rack causing very heavy steering. After an hour luckily we managed to repair it, 5 out of the 6 of us were fully trained mechanics.
Met up with the rest of the group at the cockpit café down in Adenau and we went off to the Nurburg centre to have a look around before heading off to Brunnchen to check out what was on the track. Being a week day it looks as if companies had hired it to test some new cars out, I saw the new Audi R8 being tested along with some new Range Rovers all of which setting fast times.
At 17:30 we drove to the Ring entrance an purchased a ring card. Almost everyone in our group got 1 lap in. This was my first time out on any track, I was very wary of other drivers, quite often pulling over to the right to let traffic through, it wasnât until around 4 minutes into the lap I got into the spirit of it. Not knowing the track or how the car would handle it I took it fairly easy, it was a nice hot day and there was plenty of grip. I managed to put in 10.17 lap time, which I was happy with, hopefully one day I will have another chance at it. The fastest time out of our group was 8.20 in an Evo6.
i will get more pics up soon - more info here Nurburgring 2014 | Awel Swynol
