Hi All.

When my A4 was stolen last month, I looked into how to secure the car and stop this happening again.
My car was stolen by programming a key using the OBD port on the car. It takes a thief around 40 seconds to program a key in the car and the car is driven away sometimes within a minute.

Sadly, the OBD port on most Audi's / BMW's / Range Rovers are live even without the ignition on. This is obviously for diagnostic reasons, but it's also a huge security problem.

I looked around and then finally settled on OBDProtector. The main reason was I spoke to Paul Chase who gave me a run down of what they're newly built product could do. It's a brand new piece of kit, that's only just been Thatcham approved.
This is the only OBD protection device on the market that is Thatcham approved.

I'm happy to say it was fitted today by an install specialist, who did an amazing job, both with the wiring and the explanation of everything.

Here's how it works:
- The OBD port is disabled (no power) until activated using a keycard.
- Pushing the keycard against the dash (where the reader is installed by them) activates a switch, which you can then use to turn on the OBD.
- The port automatically disables itself after 8 hours if left on (Great feature!)
- There are 2 cards given with the device, and you can register your Pin number so that should they ever be lost, you can get some new ones.
- The OBD port inside securely plugs into a device that blocks it being accessed. This is security sealed using heatsink wrap, then put way behind the dash, nice and out of the way.
- As said, this is the only device like this on the market that's actually been tested by Thatcham. Apparently, after 6 minutes of trying to access the car OBD port the testers gave up. The threshold for a security test is 5 minutes.

Other bits:
- Security stickers come with the product, so you can stop them smashing your windows and even having a go. These say "An advanced security device is fitted to this vehicle"
- This comes installed only. You cannot buy the box on its own, simply because this needs to be done right.
- Materials and parts are very well made.

I believe they're launching this product on Monday, and apparently Audi Sport is getting some kind of discount. If you want to avoid what happened to me, I highly recommend it.

Finally:
Tim (the person who installed mine, who also helped develop the product) is raising money for Cancer Research. He's a thoroughly nice guy, who didn't accept a payment for his work today instead asked I donate the cost to this. Incredible.

Had a look and will probably be ordering in the next few weeks after I've sorted a few other things.
Thanks for sorting a forum discount out. Looks a good product. Will be interesting to see if the insurance company take it into account

Insurance companies will love the new obd portector as its thatcham approved. ;)

Just a thought... I enquired at my local Audi dealer and they discussed it between some senior managers who told me that any tampering with obd port such as this would be an automatic warranty fail...
They tell me that for 2016 cars there is no power to obd port in absence of official car key - making the need for this type of mod unnecessary?
Anyone else with any views/info on this?
I can't believe that a mod which adds security (Thatcham approved?) could void warranty...

This is a standard Dealer approach to something they are unwilling to address or understand - after all who gets the sales when you cars stolen.

Would be interesting to see if they are stating that for example an insurance black box (plug in obd) voids the warranty too? As this in effect is very similar to how the system works (albeit Portector does not simply unplug)..

We have begun the painful education process to manufacturers and have the support of the smmt, Thatcham and SGS (SGS are the global certification on integration and whom Thtacham have to verify with. if they say it'll cause no issues, you can trust it'll will have no adverse effect).

I agree, sounds like standard service manager BS. Make a great headline / Watchdog story though... "Dealer voided my warranty for fitting anti-theft device". Muppets. :)

Just spoke with our contacts at New Vehicle Assessment in Thatcham to see if they can help us communicate this through Dealer channel any quicker.

I would have thought that Audi would be okay with this "mod" if it meant that fewer of their quality cars were known to be easily stolen, if I was a premium car producer, I'd be a bit concerned about joe public finding out that their security was not quite what we might expect. Seeing as they claim that model year 2016> cars are okay in this respect, that "lop hole" must have been bothering them!

Just one thing, connectivity, does this system, when the OBD port is unlocked, allow free access for VCDS and Carista ? (the free access for the official VAG tools is assumed)

I once got "forced" into mentioning VAG-COM to a VW dealer years ago, and the service manager assured me that by connecting that to the car would cause lots of problems - I think it was over the issue I had where my car did not have some monitoring systems enabled (brake wear and washer fluid level) - "no you can't sort that by using VAG-COM, you will need us to order in a pre-programmed dash pod - and fit it" - wrong, under five minutes with VAG-COM and job was done!

Yes once the system is disarmed full access is granted through the port. Anything you can do on standard vehicle, you can do when Portector is disarmed :)

Just finished speaking with the approval person at VW Group for aftermarket accessories.

Their stance is that if they do not sell the system, they will not support it. Offered to open discussions about them stocking for Dealer promotion as we are already an approved supplier to VW and no interest and unless their parts marketing get requests/complaints to provide a solution from customers they will only promote their current theft recovery systems (any other system will detract from the impact of the tracking systems) , even though Portector will compliment these and of course address the initial theft of the vehicle, which vehicle tracking systems generally do not. Oh yeah, and they do not recognise an issue with Audi's being stolen.

In summary:
It appears their stance is: They are happy for vehicles to be stolen, however utilising their approved tracking systems there is a good chance it will be recovered (in what condition is no concern).

I think if complaints/cocnerns are made to Dealer and/or HQ around why they are not either offering a solution and or at the very least reviewing one that does the job and has the industry tests and certificates so that owners at not penalised for wanting to protect their vehicles, it will force them into accepting the situation, so feel free to complain people!!

If anyone wants us to liaise and argue the points with their Dealer, no problem just provide contact details and confident we can convince them to listen.. if it has to be Dealer by dealer, then that's what we will do. We have already spoken with a couple of Dealers we know and asked them to get some answers from HQ.

I will follow on with an email to them with all the information, certificates and full test reports so that it is clear Portector works and causes no issues. Will update if anything changes.

Paul, thanks for clearing that up, I asked really for the benefit of others as I jumped the gun and quickly grabbed what was available as soon as I heard about this Audi security weakness - ie the basic metal blocker for the OBD port.

Your solution will be easier to live with as the Sailes one that gets imported from Germany is a bit fiddly to fit and remove.

I for one, given the introductory discount price, would have picked your one had it been available, or if I had been slower in buying one!

It does look like VAG owners along with LRJ and others really need to get to work on their dealers, as I am of the same opinion to you, ie I'd rather stop the car from being taken than be able to easily find where I could locate its remains!

I'm currently using Disklok as the initial and visible deterrent (Thatcham SOLD SECURE approved) - and backing that up with my OBD port lock, while understanding that if my car has been chosen, and I'm sure it will not be, then it will still get removed from me.

I have mentioned your product on a SEAT forum, so I'd hope that some Cupra owners improve their car security.

No problem, yeah unfortunately we had nearly 12 month delay in launching as we had to wait for Thatcham to create the new criteria to test against. but is done no so all good :)

I appreciate the mention on the other forum, utilising our range of bespoke looms Portector can be installed to just about every make and model of car and light commercial (I haven't seen 2015 figures yet but imagine Transit is still the most stolen vehicle in the UK - believe it or not!) and of course Audi is not the only vehicles that suffer from this.

Just had it fitted today, took about 2 hours.

Very unobtrusive, and I seriously can't see Audi voiding any warranty because its been installed.

I'm building something like this (on the list and is personal) one extra can module, no obd2 port tampering and a pincode enteried via dash.

That was my idea anyway..................................

Props on the product though, looks well designed :) and fully secures the port. :)

I'll just get mine cut off and put a plug on it lol

I think that plan should read, unscrew OBD port from its fixing point and store it out of sight under the dash, then buy a chopped off OBD port from a scrappy and screw that in in its place. I think that that was what was suggested a few months ago, that would annoy a car thief!
