I noticed earlier tnight that i cant here that recirulation noise of coolant or oil being pumped round the engine after the car has been switched off. Could anyone advise what the problem might be ? The water pump has been repalced recently (2 weeks ago).

Thanks

Matt

Well it certainly isn't the water pump (or coolant pump as you describe it) as this is driven off the engine so if the engine isn't running the the water pump isn't.

Are you sure it not just the cooling fans in front of the radiator that are continuing for a short while?

Normal.
The S3 has a secondary water pump located at the front of the engine bay.

After you switch off the engine this item continues to pump coolant through the turbo so as to protect the bearings.

Should run for about 10 mins.

Basically you can rag your car about and switch it off straight away. Saves having to sit with the car idling or fitting a turbo timer like the good (or perhaps bad) ole escort RS turbo days :)

i think you have the wrong idea. The secondary water pump has stopped working, so how do i go about repalcing it, finding its location or even fault finding ?

are you actually getting up to the temp that would cause the pump to kick in? i thought it was quite high. i've only heard mine come in when it's been really warm and that's with the afterrun pump mod so if you still have the standard sensor in there it might be working normally

Sorry mate, misread your post.

Dave, my friends S3 runs the pump after every engine shut down. Infact even if you turn on the ignition without running the engine. Does he have a faulty sensor?

regardless of the engine warming up the pump comes on ! could be the sensor i m not sure ? i dont even know where the pump is located or how to tell if the sensor is faulty.

The pump should be located at the front of the engine bay near the rad on the drivers side. I'd unplug the electrical connector and test for 12v with a multimetr or test lamp to see if power is getting to the pump and then go from there.

Also there should be a fuse to check I imagine.
