The smoke/ gunk on filler cap could be caused from short journeys... quite common or even a blocked breather/ pcv.
Your 'Mate' who told you the crank sensor cant cause your faults isnt entirly correct, It basically tells the Ecu when to open each injector/ fire each coil... along with some help from the cam sensor.
I would suggest renewing the MAF sensor first (with genuine) as the maf controlls a lot of the fueling, which could cause all of your symptoms : juddering/ excessive smoke/ lack of poke at low revs.
