Private plates

Ever since i've owned this Audi (6 months and i've named her Audrey) and contacted the main dealer for parts they have all ways had trouble recognizing my reg number on their computer.

Having some spare time to day (no difference to any other day really.) I thought I'd phone Audi UK and ask them why this is and if there is any recalls or any thing out standing.

Audi UK was unable to find my reg plate on their data base, he said this could be because the car is over 10 years old. I gave him the VIN number and He said the reg plate for my car should be R747 FDM not R89 YTU. It would appear I have a private plate.

I phoned my Grandad who bought the car when it was just over a year old and asked him about the plate. He said he has never fitted a private plate to the car and knows nothing about it.

I guess the point of this is to try and work out why someone would fit a private plate to a new car and not take it with them. Also is there word or something in lettering if spaced differently or modified.
A couple of my friends have private plates that dont really mean any thing untill you change the spacing or change them slightly. Example, P8RNO (Porno), S7UT (****), J13MWR (J BMW R).
But i can't work out what this says, if any thing or even why any one would change to a private plate on a new car and not take it with them?

I got a private plate because my car was cloned just before I bought it and was sick of being stopped everywhere I went. As my private plate was cheap, it'll go with the car when I chop it in.

Maybe they thought it wasn't worth the hassle to switch plates having done it once or just sold the car on in a hurry. Or maybe they were up to no good, although if you or your grandad haven't been pulled in the 9 years you've had it, that won't be the case.

BTW - since my car was cloned, I try & avoid giving out the reg or showing it in photos. You might consider the same fella - it could save you a whole heap of police based hassles!

Out of curiosity, why would you spend money on a private plate and move it on with the car?

Bigbird, Mate in IOW had his car cloned. It never been any thing I've thought about it but it does seem to be getting a bit common.

Maybe the car was sold and registered as R89 YTU when new, and the owner decided to keep R89 YTU as their private plate, so DVLA had to assign a new R registration for the car, which is what you have now?

even tho my plate was cheap £250, theres no way i would let it go when i sold the car

Sounds likes a private plate to me.

Only 6 digits, clearly someone has assigned it to the car!

I have litterally just bought my own plate and am waiting for the transfer to go through within the next week.

Definatly wont be selling mine with the car!

I had a dig through all the paper over the weekend. It looks like my grandad had it serviced at auid till 2002 and then some indy in bristol untill I bought it.
So i organised all the paper my garage and date order.
I went through every bit of paper, ever pocket in manual holder and found a HPI check form. its only about A5 size and states nothing is wrong with the car but it did have 1 plate change in 1999. Out of the masses amount of paper work, I even have the orignal for sale add, PDI check, receipt and recall letters. There is no paper work to do with the plate change.
I think i'm reading to much in to this plate change, since the cars had this plate for the last 11ish years and no issues but my curiosity has pocked its head up.
Why would they keep all this paper work but not the plate change.
Odd.
I might have to let this go or I'll start trying to track down the original owner and asking them why. lol
