Hi all,

We have recently purchased a 2010 Q5, with full main dealer history and 85k miles. It is the 2.0T FSI engine, and had the oil consumption work done last year under warranty from Audi. Perfect we thought. However, we have recently noticed the revs surge up and down when reversing. My wife said that they went very high when she tried to reverse up a hill the other day. All forward gears seem fine.

Any ideas? I’m hoping this isn’t going to need a new mechatronic unit and clutch, however I fear this is what you are all going to tell me! Do you think Audi will step in? The gearbox oil was changed at 35k and 65k by Audi.

i think it could be the mechatronic unit i had the same problem but in first gear ... this might sound strange but drive the car in all gear modes paddle mode s mode d mode and manual mode.. the reason why when i had my mechatronic unit replaced i still had the surging forward and audi said that this was fine which i said was ****** then 1 day after driving through all the gear modes it stopped doing it and now drives perfect ... look up something call fuzzy logic

Spoke to a gearbox specialist today and they said it’s the mechatronic unit, which would need refurbishment along with a new clutch at £2,500 + vat. Eeeeeeek!

I think that is a bit much audi sell a repair kit for this unit. Mine cost about £1200 all in to repair

The cost quoted above include a new clutch too. I take it yours didn’t?

First update the software of the mechatronic before repairs. Maybe that helps.

Mine was just mech only it's a common problem on that gearbox

Thanks for the info, it’s booked in with Audi at the end of the month for diagnostics. I hope they will be specific, and not just ‘it needs a new gearbox at ££££!’ which will not be helpful!

Last few days mine has started surging again when coming to a stop...not happy booked back in with audi in a few weeks
