Hi, my friend's been quoted £900 all in to fix what there telling him is an egr valve issue. They saying 6hrs labour and they need to drop the engine and remove part of the exhaust, below is picture of the engine. Can any one advise if this rings true and can it be done DIY to save money. 2012 2lt TDI

Has your friend considered doing and egr delete instead?

The guy who looked at mine said they were horrible to replace so I can see the 6hrs probably being right but it's an awful lot to charge as I was only looking at about £300 including the part. Try a different garage and see what they say about price.

always get a couple of quotes, is there a VAG Independent around your way you can try ?

What exactly makes them think the EGR valve is at fault?
My niece's 2010 A3 1.6 TDI CR had an intermittent limp-mode problem that a VW & Audi 'specialist' declared would only be fixed by a new EGR valve at a cost of circa £500.
She held off as no fault code was being thrown up and eventually when one did it pointed to the auxiliary coolant pump being at fault : the auxiliary pump cools the EGR valve assembly and if the pump plays up then the EGR can over-heat and cause the car to go into limp-mode.
One new pump costing about £105 and an hour of spannering got the thing fitted and for the past few months it's been like a new car again.

LOL at this point love my old 2.0 tdi where i need to unplug air pipe and unbolt 3 bolts then ready to replace egr valve (valve costs for me was 50£)
anyway you can check where is your egr valve following that alloy pipe just after throttle body. Then you should check what is the problem with it (egr valve, egr cooler, etc...). As other says just check around how much other garages want for doing it. And also can request the specific diagnose for it (should be around 40£ for specific diagnose)

It's labor intensive To replace the EGR valve/cooler on the new CR tdi, part is about 300 + VAT and it's about 4-6 hours to do. To be honest it's a bit on the expensive side but not far off, last one I done was about 600 + Vat and I would not touch another one again to be honest !

I have a TDI with the cr engine just had my EGR valve replaced a week ago. Valve cost £250 from tps and I payed £30 to be fitted, took my guy less than an hour to do. So I'm thinking. Your quote is a little on the high side.

So it's the CR engine, I've done egr valves before on my old 06 plate 2.0 was easy. I don't understand why it's labour intensive is it all at the front end of the engine I can see where the pipe goes into the inlet tract from the side of the engine I was thinking of just removing that and blasting it with some engine degreaser without taking too much apart

Adams24…. Interested to know what you have to do. As you've done it before you seem like the best qualified to tell me. Cheers

EGR cooler and EGR valve are 2 different things ! Which one do you require and what are the simptoms?
