hi, was driving my car today when the rear wiper started moving without me touching the switch. It then parked in the middle of the screen. Seems to be working fine now. Presume its the motor packing up! Anyone else had this happen? Cheers
 
Mine was doing this before, its something to do with water in the electrics.

Does your rear washer work?

Watch out, shortly after mine starting playing up - my boot microswitch also had a mind of its own and "opened" whenever it wanted.. it didnt actually pop mind.. though when locked it set off the alarm.
 
already had the boot lock problem through water from the washer pipe. i,l check the plug to the motor for damp before i dive in to a new motor. Cheers guys
 
I've just had to replace the motor.

Had the rear washer problem of disconnected hose, repaired it properly with new hose and tie wraps and then the water gets into the motor. The actual electric motor bit not the wiper gearing. Water in that makes the motor short itself out and switch on and off whenever it wants. Only cure is a new motor.

Be careful when buying the motor. A lot of people think that the motor is the same as a Golf Mk IV but it isn't ! I got a brand new, aftermarket motor that they said was for the A3 but when I'd fitted it (typical !! ) I realised that the washer head does not travel round with the wiper blade. The spray nozzle is fixed in one position and obviously doesn't work because the cap on the wiper arm obscures it.

You need a motor the equivalent of part no. 8E9 955 711 E. My friendly VAG specialist got me the Audi original part for £82.

Rear wiper / washer / alarm problems.

Recently had problems with my rear wash wipe and thanks to posters on this site got it sorted. Thanks to you all. I have just registered with the forum to thank you AND to give my advice to anyone having probs of this kind.
  1. Don't put it off to tomorrow - check it out now !! Corrosion = cost.
  2. When taking your rear door panel off remove the 2 screws in the handles first and pull the trim - don't panic - it sounds a lot worse than it is.
  3. If it turns out that the hose is detached replace and reseal - you've been lucky.
  4. If your hose is attached and watertight and your wiper moter is leaking fluid you're not so lucky. I used sealing compounds and 'o' rings to try to seal the spindle on mine but neither worked. Motor assembly had to replaced. Got new one from TPS Trade Parts Specialists for best part of £100. Not cheap but original VAG part and for peace of mind ( no more 02:30am alarms ) it's worth it.
  5. Let your inner panel dry off ... the soundproofing pad gets saturated with wash fluid.
  6. Open your battery cover and dry it out with rags / newspaper etc. Mine was 4 inches deep. Much further and it would have been sloshing over the battery terminals with god knows what result.
  7. Judging by the number of threads dealing with this issue, this has been a regular problem with a wide range of VAG models and a few threads mention that you would think that 'they would get their ar*es in gear and sort it.' Here's what i did to minimise the outcome should it ever happen to me again.........While your old wiper motor is off take a sheet of plastic 18 inches wide by about 36 inches long. ( i used heavy duty black bin liner) and push it onto the wiper motor mounting studs so they pierce through. Refit your new motor trapping plastic between it and car body, and connect water hose and electrics. Refit your door panel with the plastic protruding out of the bottom at the latch. When the panel is secured, trim the excess plastic away with a sharp knife.......The end result is that should i spring a leak again, the washer fluid will run down the bag instead of into the latch's alarm microswitch. Second benefit is that any leaked fluid will show up on the outside of the door sill and most will run outside the car and not into the boot / battery. Will be easier to detect as well.
Sorry for the long post but i felt that as the forum helped me so much, it's only fair that i added my tuppence worth for the next unfortunate victim.:idea:​
 
When reversin the wiper. Comes on could be due to this that its a common fault
 
Hi, No i think it's deliberate to give one rear wiper sweep for safety reasons. Only happens on mine if front wiper stalk is in the on position. At least i hope it's deliberate as it still happens with the new motor fitted. Everyone's problems seem to be the rear wiper taking on a mind of it's own. Start's wiping for absolutely no reason and doesn't 'dock' properly when it does eventually decide to stop - ps don't get distracted watching it all the time. Roads have corners !! lol.

Thanks for this. My Audi A3 Sport-back has a similar problem. It started wiping the rear window when ever it felt like it without being switched on. The front wipers are auto rain sensitive ones, so if raining and the car is placed in reverse, the rear wiper should sweep once....turned on or not.
Anyway, I couldn't stop the rear wiper from continually sweeping. This is not the once every 5 seconds or so...but just sweeping continually. In the end, I pulled the fuse to stop it!
Sounds like I need a new motor.

The rear reversing sensors are also playing up. Sometimes they work, sometimes not. I will investigate this when doing the rear wiper motor.

Hi,

Noticed my rear wiper is not level (Also jet intermittent? Possibly blocked but would like to check to make sure it's not a future problem) , the actual blade is just touching the paint work. Is it a case of removing the inner trim and tightening the arm/motor???

Also removing the inner trim - removed the 2 bolts from the inside, is this then a case of prizing off the trim?? Just didn't seem to move? Didn't want to cause any damage and find out there's something I've missed?

Any info welcome.

The arm may have slipped on the spline. Remove plastic cap and jet. Clean jet before replacing. Unscrew nut and prise wiper arm off the spline. This could be difficult and you may need a hub puller to remove it.

Re-adjust position of the arm over the spline and tighten the nut.

You do not need to remove the inner door card but if you want to you need to pull the card downwards VERY FIRMLY because it is held on with about 6 spring clips. Once you have done it the first time then it's dead easy !

Thanks for the comprehensive post, much appreciated. Mine has just gone, first noticed that the washer wasn't squirting on a long journey and assumed something was blocked. Then the wiper got the 'life-of-its-own' problem. I've managed to remove the rear panel and I have water leaking through the motor casing. Luckily the lock mechanism doesn't appear to have been affected on mine, yet. I wondered whether I'd be able to fix it with some rubber rings or sealant without forking out for a new motor so I feel much happier buying one now knowing this isn't the case.

Just one thing I'm unsure of, and I know others have mentioned a tool may be needed. Once the nut on the outside of the glass and the three that hold the motor in place on the inside have been removed, how do you get the motor off? Do you grab the entire wiper arm and twist it back and forth in the direction it moves when working, or do you pull it away from the car? I had a very brief attempt at this so not sure whether I'll need a tool but it felt pretty solid in all directions so I was worried I'd break something.
 
I have got the dreaded brown gunk problem inside the tailgate and I am going to replace the motor. I realise I will need a puller to get the spindle out, but how easy is it to put back together with the new motor? Is it a simple matter of tightening the nut on the outside of the glass and the arm moves down onto the spindle? No other tools required?

The only difficult bit is getting the wiper arm off. If you get a puller it will make life easy. Once off then disconnect plug and washer pipe and then three bolts and it's off. The spindle is part of the motor so when you put the new one in just re-fix the three bolts, reconnect plug and washer pipe.

The original arm the slots over the splines on the new spindle and you tighten down with the nut.

Replace plastic cap and job done !!
 
Thanks, I attacked it tonight and couldn't get it out. Also realised that I would have a hole in the window until I sourced a new motor!

Does anyone know the part number?

This is the latest version which will (should ! ) stop the problem happening again ! About £120 from Audi.

Be careful buying off ebay because although many say they will fit, they fit but the washer fitting is different and won't work.

Had this happen to me today... rear wiper just started doing its thing. I thought maybe it had something to do with the front sensors. I fiddled and pushed everything. Even with front ones one off, the rear kept doing it's thing. Didn’t some googling, landed here, you guys freaked me out me little... got back into the car and figured I try pressing the spray (clean) window switch for the back.
Wiper went faster (which is normal after straying), then stopped.

Voila. I’m happy.
Just hope it stays that way.

You want to buy one off these just incase you ever want to replace wiper ar
